Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM Overview

Standard wide-angle to short-telephoto zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras.
Impressively bright f/2 maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and suits working in low-light conditions as well as affords increased control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Ultra-Low Dispersion (UD) elements are featured in the optical design, and help to suppress color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve greater clarity and color accuracy throughout the zoom range.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing design, optimized focusing algorithms, and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Seriously, what can I say about this lens that hasn't been said already. It's a prime that zooms! It'll break your wrist it's so heavy. It's amazing.

Phenomenal lens

I purchased this lens 3 months ago to use with my R5, despite so many folks online complaining about its size and weight. I've now used it as my sole lens during trips to Brooklyn, Barcelona, Paris, London, Amsterdam, and Berlin. It does NOT disappoint; image quality is incredible and very sharp, and you quickly quit noticing the weight as you're carrying it around. I'm a 135 pound woman who doesn't lift weights, and I've had zero issues. Phenomenal lens for travel; it's so nice not having to change lenses or carry extra. I occasionally miss the ability to go extra wide, but you can't have everything!

Outstanding

This is an incredible lens. Reviewers say that this is a nearly-impossible statement piece from Canon, and while I don't know the market history or the difficulty of the optics involved, to use the lens, it's an easy statement to accept. It isn't as intensely precise as say the 85mm f/1.2, but it can get close over a zoom range that hits several prime hotspots. Most importantly, it brings that ineffable cool factor to shots, and can instantly switch subject and style while doing so. Of course, in doing all of this, the lens is very expensive, and also quite imposing physically. Although an obviously strong street lens, it is probably the least discrete thing you can attach to an R body, being both heavier and wider than the 100-500mm and more standoffish at interpersonal distances. It's a marked contrast to the Leica fantasy of a light body and an inoffensive lens with just right softness and lazy focus... it's a beast that requires effort to shoot and rewards you with vivid images and biting detail.

Who cares if it is heavy. I don't notice it. It takes exquisitely sharp pictures. My favorite lens. Makes my new R5 shine. Had to wait almost a year to get it. Worth the wait.

Best piece of glass ever made by Canon

I've been a photographer for over 20 years. I've purchased and sold and played with so many lenses over the years. I've ran around the world with a 100-400 attached to a 5DIII for 10 years. I've had two bodies on my shoulders with the 70-200L and the 100-400L and other lenses attached. Anyone who shoots with these set-ups knows how heavy they are but also how crisp and clean and gorgeous the images are. Take the R5 or R6 and slap on the 28-70L f/2 and not only do you have similar weight but you actually have the sharpest and greatest lens body set up I feel I've ever put in my hands. The images are tack sharp and that massive opening up front is just spectacular. It truly is the most remarkable lens I've ever used. Yes, it's expensive, but we all know that outstanding glass lasts forever. I can't recommend this enough, if you can afford it, but better yet, if you can actually get your hands on one.

This lens is sharp and when paired with and IBIS body gets 8 stops of IS. Used it last weekend for a family get together with amazing results. Not missing my EF 24-70 f/2.8 at all.

how bad is the focus breathing?
Asked by: patrick
Focus breathing on this drives me nuts, it isn't bad, but it isn't minimal as other have said, granted, the worst part is jumping in that close range (1' to 4'). So if you are using this for vlogging, and move around, it is bad. But using it at my kids concert this week, it doesn't do bad at the longer focus distances, even though that was still more than a 20' focus change on the stage, at 30' away.
