Canon 35mm f/1.8 overview

  • 1Description

Compact, lightweight, and close-focusing, the RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM from Canon is a unique wide-angle prime mixing the versatility of a general wide lens with the specialty of a 1:2 macro optic. An advanced optical design is benefitted by a Super Spectra coating, which helps to control flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy when working in bright or backlit conditions. Capable of focusing down to 6.7" at half life-size, this lens is ideal for photographing everything from close-ups of plants to street scenes and landscapes. The bright f/1.8 maximum aperture offers increased control over depth of field and also suits working in a variety of lighting conditions. Complementing this is a five stop-effective image stabilization, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Also, an STM motor affords impressively quiet and smooth autofocus performance and full-time manual focus override. Additionally, a configurable Control Ring lets you adjust exposure settings, including ISO, aperture, and exposure compensation, from the lens itself.

Wide-angle prime is designed for use with full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless digital cameras.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to five stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
Macro design benefits working with close-up subjects and provides a 1:2 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 6.7"
STM stepping motor offers fast, quiet, smooth, and accurate autofocus performance that is ideal for video recording as well as still shooting.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

    Canon 35mm f/1.8 reviews

RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM Lens is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good lens A bit larger than expected. Front element not well protected, I like the large back element though. Autofocus a bit noisier than expected. Very good image quality overall, macro is great, small chromatic aberration, maybe 2.3 stop vignette at f1.8, really large comma wings on hor. edges and corners at f1.8 always well defined cores, comma improves at f2.5 and goes away at f3.2. IS is impressively good. The 2 rings are a bit too close but otherwise great to have. No weather sealing (really?). When camera is powered off lens goes on some intermediate aperture around f5. Lens works only with RF mount, not even EF-M (sadly!). Price is reasonnable for what you get.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Primes that dont break the bank. Im using a 24-105rf and now this rf35 f/1.8 on my EOS R. This lens has lovely Bokeh, nice build and super fast af plus solid stabilization. No weather resistance that I can see but at this price point this is what we get. Wide open at f1.8 this lens matches the 30 megapixels very well. The weight is a miracle compared to how all these features work together. Manual focus is great once rotation Menue 5, choice 4 RF lens sensitivity to linked. Also leave MF peaking on high red menue 2 choice 1 and another setting I like is Menue 4 choice 1 lens electronic MF. I set mine to One shot enabled magnify. I will need to press shutter half way and will in MF not AF view is magnify-ed to possible 10 to 1. Although the AF is great on both my lenses, Manual focus brings out creativity not capable with modern AF systems unless you have full time over ride. Looking at my DNG files from Adobe 11.1 Im able to change over the CR3 files to DNG and transfer them to LR6. Files look great with the smoothest transition in Bokeh I have ever seen for such a inexpensive lens. You cant go wrong with this one if you building your R mount lenses. Also in the menu its a good idea to set lens to retract when powers off, menu 5 choice 4.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No lens hood available. I bought this lens originally is said it came with the lens hood. This lens has been sitting for weeks since I shoot outdoors what a major fail on Canons part by not even releasing the lens hood with the lens. I am still scratching my head about this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Essential for EOS R It seems that all four of the EOS RF lenses are fantastic, and this little guy is no exception. It is small, light, sharp (oh, so sharp!), fast, and versatile.  Since I got it a couple of weeks ago, it has not left my R at all.  The 24-105mm f/4L IS USM is also a fantastic lens, but no one would ever accuse it of being compact. The only thing wrong with this lens is that I wish it was a touch smaller, e.g., closer in size to the EF 50mm f/1.8 Nifty Fifty, or (better yet) the EF 40mm f/2.8. Go to a real lens reviewer for details on the ultimate IQ - I have included two pretty good examples of the IQ that I am getting: A close up (about 1/5 life size) of a mushroom and a 100% crop onto a little girls tee shirt, taken from about 2 feet away.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dissappointing I was excited to order this lens as it would be the first native RF lens for my EOS R which I really like. I had been using EF lenses, a 50mm, 85mm and a 70-200mm with the adapter that all work flawlessly. Im not sure what I expected but my surprise came when I attached the 24mm EF-S (about a 36mm equivalent) pancake lens and realized that it focused faster and was sharper. The quality of the images coming from this lens reminds me of the EF-M 22m F2. And while this lens is by no means terrible, I think they could have done better.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A nice sharp lens but larger and heavier than expected. The new mirror-less R series camera should result in smaller lighter lenses, right?  That is one of the selling points of going mirror-less.  Well this 35mm lens is much larger and heavier than its EF counterparts.  Test photos yielded good resolution across the entire field.  Auto-focus was fast and accurate.  The macro feature allowing close focusing is a definite advantage.  Manual focus was good as well. It is native to the R so no adapter required.  However my equivalent EF lenses using the adapter work just fine, and are smaller overall. Bottom line - I will keep this lens.  It has its uses and works well but I doubt that I will get any more R specific lenses anytime soon.  They are much more expensive than their EF counterparts, larger, heavier and I dont find the new setting ring an advantage for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love it! I’m a long time EF lens shooter. My very first EF lens, and one I’ve gotten saleable photos with, is the EF35mm f/1.4L. Well, I like this RF35mm non-L better! Focus is instantaneous. The lens is sharp wide open. And the IS is a godsend. Did I mention the 1:2 macro? This is just a great all around lens and combined with the R body makes for a very compact walk-around rig. I could almost see foregoing the kit lens and just using the RF35.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So Fast! When the new EOSR came out, I was very much hoping that at least one of the early lenses would be a macro lens, since I get a great amount of enjoyment from macro photography. I was thrilled when the 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM Lens was announced. Getting it in the hand, it is so small! Im not used to that for a macro lens. In addition, its autofocus is also blazing fast! I cant wait until spring when I can really put it through its paces.
