Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM Overview

By B&H Photo's

Distinguished by its speed, the RF 50mm f/1.2 L USM from Canon is a desirable normal-length prime due to its versatile focal length and bright f/1.2 maximum aperture. This fast design excels in difficult lighting conditions and also benefits working with shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques. The optical layout incorporates one UD element and one aspherical element, which help to reduce both chromatic and spherical aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and sharpness. A rounded 10-blade diaphragm also benefits bokeh quality to suit isolating subjects with depth of field. Complementing the imaging capabilities is an apt ring-type Ultrasonic Motor, which delivers fast, near-silent autofocus and full-time manual focus override. Additionally, a unique Control Ring is integrated into the lens design for intuitive control over exposure settings from the lens itself.

Normal-length prime is designed for full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless digital cameras.
Exceptionally bright f/1.2 maximum aperture affords extensive control over depth of field for selective focus applications and also benefits working in low-light situations.
One UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) element is featured, and helps to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to provide greater clarity and color accuracy.
An aspherical element is used to correct spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
Ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions.
Rounded 10-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM Reviews

The best lens I own

Yes, it's big, heavy and expensive. I have had it only a couple of weeks and it has become my favorite Canon lens for family and events. It is a fantastic portrait lens since it isolates the subject and renders a dreamy background. I don't need o repeat what everyone else has said.

Great Upgrade from EF 50 1.2

Very good lens, huge upgrade over the EF 50 1.2, much faster af, significantly sharper at f1.2-3.5 and still renders magical backgrounds. the EF 50 1.2 was barely able to resolve the 45mp R5 at wider apertures, but this lens handles it all just fine. definitely recommend and would buy again without hesitating

Magical

The RF50 1.2, RF70-200 4.0 and R5 were the three things that finally got me to bite the bullet and upgrade from my existing L lens and 5D MKIII. I had always loved the ergonomics and results that I got with the 5D and primarily had issues with wanting IBIS across all my lens, better AF and high ISO performance. I had always wanted the EF 50 1.2 but was very concerned with sample by sample issues, AF and sharpness wide open. The RF 50 1.2 resolved those issues. I made my purchase so I could shoot a few shots at my sons small wedding ceremony in central park and the shots were as good as any pro shots had seen in the past including my daughter's wedding.

Okay so I did my research on this lens before I bought it but the video I watched downplayed the true beauty of this lens. I should some pics of my animals around the apartment and the detail is clearer than I think my eyes can even comprehend. I would 1000% recommend this to anyone trying to enhance there images and even video to the next level

The best lens I have ever used

I am a prime lens shooter, I almost never use zoom lenses. And the 50mm focal length happens to be my favorite. That being said, this lens is the best I have ever used. And I am a bit of a lens snob. I've used over 50 different lenses over the years, including Zeiss. This Canon lens is just the best.

Flawless optics

I wouldn't go hiking with this lens, as it is big and heavy. But the optics are flawless and the AF almost instantaneous. I bought it mainly for portraits and similar applications.

Amazing, transcendent image quality

I finally sprung for this lens after a year of waffling. The images it renders straight out of the camera make lesser lenses look bland and boring. My advice is to just get it. You won't be disappointed. By the way, I used to own the EF 50mm f1.2. There is no comparison. The AF is splendid.

Buying Cine Lenses for Canon. Does this lens have a long focus throw? Does this lens have smooth F/T Stop transition, instead of "click" stops? For smooth transition of focus and depth of field?
Asked by: al
Sorry but this is not a cine lens. It is all electronic control with no scales. It would not work on a pro set for the assistant would have no way of controlling the focus or stop. If you want a Canon cine lens here is the link. https://bhpho.to/2A5NLe5
