Great value added for EF lens

Its a great trade off to bulking up the EF glass. Worth the money. Stop anguishing over the decision. I also think the control ring one is worth owning though.

Cool Accessory

I bought this mount adapter because i wanted to start using drop-in filters. I got tired of messing about with front of lens filters, plus I am about to purchase a Canon TS-E 17mm lens and cannot use front end filters with that lens. This adapter is the same build quality as my normal Canon EF to RF adapter. I docked one star because I believe for the price, Canon should not cheap out and ought to include a clear filter as well with this set up.

Wheel is just too loose

Great concept but I keep bumping and changing the setting. I called B&H but they said any other one would be the same. I finally stuck a small square card in next to the wheel to make the action stiffer.

Total garbage, image ruiner

I don't understand how Canon continues to manufacture and sell this product in good conscience. It causes an absolutely terrible color caste and weird discolored shadows in the corners. I'd thought it was slightly more usable if you don't dial it to the max, but I was just doing some landscapes where I dialed it back just enough that through the viewfinder the images looked OK. But when I got home they were ruined. Imagine if you were on a vacation somewhere you'll never visit again and don't notice your images are ruined till you get home. I hope they'll discontinue the product soon. For many years I had great experiences with Canon products, but most of what I've bought in the past few years had been sub-par. I probably won't be recommending Canon to my clients anymore and I'm considering moving to another manufacturer for my own gear, too.

Fantastic filter, finicky setting wheel

The construction and quality of this adapter/filter are fantastic, and the built-in ND variability that works with ALL of my EF lenses is a huge time-and-money saver. My one and only complaint is that the dial to adjust the level of darkening takes a very light touch, and is easy to adjust accidentally given its convenient placement. I constantly find myself having to re-adjust it, or just open it back up when I didn't intend to use it in the first place. Having a light 'lock' point at Min and Max would be extremely helpful, or just add a bit more resistance to the dial would do the trick.

Good except for purple cast at higher ND range

Using with RED Komodo. The adapter itself is great, and fits really snug on the Komodo. The VND works well..UNTIL you need to get up to about 6 or so stops, then the color cast starts going purple. Which if you're wanting to keep a low f-stop in sunlight for DOF, you're going to need to push the VND. Obviously if you push it all the way, it's unusable, so just don't do that. Luckily what purple cast I have been getting I have been able to mostly correct it in post, although that's not ideal. Hopefully Canon will release a better drop-in VND option for the 6-9 or higher ranges. I'm only using this when on a gimbal for now, otherwise I drop in the clear filter and use my PolarPro Basecamp VND, which yields much better results with no color cast.

Not useful as advertised

I rented this to try and was not impressed for a Canon quality product. At higher ND, the color cast is horrendous & irretrievable with post processing. Useful for up to 5 stops maybe but no more than that.

How does the variable neutral density filter work ...

How does the variable neutral density filter work with ultra wides like the 11-24mm or 16-35mm? Normally front mounted variable e neutral density filters aren't usable with such wide lenses but wondering if being mounted on the rear of the lens solves or improves these issues?

Is there a version of the drop-in filter mount that adopts PL lenses to RF?
Asked by: Phil
This Fotodiox adapter is for PL lens to Canon RF camera and it has a built in ND filter. The filter is not drop in though. There isn't a version with drop in for that combination. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1486458-REG/fotodiox_pl_eosr_ndthrtl_cine_vizelex_nd_throttle_lens.html

Do this slightly change focal distance on lenses, or lose additional stops of light?
Asked by: Christian
The focal length will not change and you will not lose any light other than using the nd, which cuts out 1.5-9 stops of light.

Does this seriously not come with a cover for when the filter is not in place? That would be Canon's ultra-stingy style.
Asked by: Steve
It would be much smater to develop a variable drop-in variable ND filter starting at 0.0 optical density. (this Canon actually starts at 1.5). Then, the ND could stay put at all times without the need to buy a clear filter in separate. Now, if you want to save some $300+ dollars you can use the multi-shoot high dynamic range (HDR) method. As an alternative to split graduated neutral density filters, some digital cameras offer built-in HDR which allow the camera to capture and then combine different exposures of the same subject matter when shooting in RAW image format. However, as long as a sufficiently short exposure time is available, it is possible to exactly mimic the effect of a graduated neutral density filter by using two exposures of the same scene one or several stops apart and blending them with a graduated mask in an image editor. This method has the advantage that the shape of the mask can be freely defined in editing.

is there a clear filter?

is there a clear filter?
Asked by: walter
No, there is no a clear filter incorporated within this variable ND filter. You can get a separate clear filter and also a separate polarizing filter. It would have been nice to have a clear filter incorporated into the variable ND filter as well as in the polarizer, but such is not the case. To get clear, you must use the separate clear drop in filter.

I am more concerning the image quality and autofocus speed when using this variable ND filter. Does it degrade the image quality or add othe color tone(s) or hue(s) to the captured image? Does it slow down the autofocus speed at all?
Asked by: Rong
It works well , The darker the ND the slower the focus usually it gets , but in Mirrorless Digital Camera its not as bad , and it does not have a color shift
