Canon 3446C001 Overview

Designed for use with the Canon Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, this Drop-In Variable Neutral Density Filter A is an intuitive and sleek means for using a variable neutral density filter in conjunction with an adapted lens, especially those lenses lacking traditional filter threads. This variable ND filter is permanently installed within a drop-in holder and has an integrated wheel for adjusting the rotation position to alter the ND effect.

The variable ND filter provides 1.5 to 9 stops of adjustment and creates a darkening of the entire image for photographing with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the filter, helping you to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By increasing your aperture or slowing your exposure time, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Canon 3446C001 Reviews

It's terrible, but it's better than nothing.

Great that this exists. However, there's no friction on the wheel. Meaning if you don't tape it in place it will move on you. And even taping it in place is quite a challenge because it'll slip as you're taping it. This could be an excellent tool unfortunately it wasn't thought through. At full strength it does have optic issues, but that's true of many V ND filters. That doesn't bug me too much. Looking forward to upgrading to a 3rd party filter, the idea of this is excellent but the execution makes it ruin more shots than it makes.

Pricey but a nice accessory addition

Im not sure that I would use it at a full 9stops as it seems like that image would require a lot more processing and color correction in post but so far I am happy with the results it gives me when I need to use it and happy to have it in my kit. Possibly a filter kit including all the filters availavble to that adapter for purhcase would be more convenient and cheaper?

Why is it MORE expensive to buy just the filter without the adapter included?

While Canon sets the MSRP on their items, as of the time/date of this reply, the cost of the Canon Drop-In Variable ND Filter A (1.5-9 Stop), BH #CADIVNDFA, and the Canon Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with Variable ND Filter, BH #CAMAEFRFDIND, on our website are currently the same price. However, I would simply recommend that if you are certain that you want the Variable ND Filter, as it is the most expensive of the filter options that are compatible for use with the Canon Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, I would simply recommend to purchase the adapter kit that comes with the Variable ND filter, the Canon Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with Variable ND Filter, BH #CAMAEFRFDIND.

Does this have the option to not use any ND, while keeping the filter in the adapter to avoid dust seeping into the hole?
Asked by: Jay
You will need to add this clear filter to the drop in filter slot in the Canon EF RF filter adapter. This filter will make sure no dust gets in the camera. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1434115-REG/canon_3444c001_drop_in_clear_filter_a.html

Is there a non-variable ND drop in filter for this mount? Like a set of multiple NDs? I can't stand the color shift and increased contrast variable NDs create. I'd much prefer to just carry around a few drop in's at varying ND levels

How big is the actual filter? Will this drop in to the 52 mm filter slots at the back of Canon telephoto lenses?
Asked by: Jack
I don't have the actual dimensions but the filter is permanently mounted in the holder and it will only fit into the canon drop in filter mount adapter. See BH #CAMAEFRFDIND.

A Domke 11x11" Color Coded Protective Wrap (Gray), B H # DOPW11G would be a suitable option to store this filter. https://bhpho.to/3t8GR0O
