Atomos Ninja V Reviews

compact design with touch sensitive screen

navigation through the menu with ease, no double touch because it didn't recognize my finger. easy to handle and mount, very compact design. downside: SSD needs to be in the caddy - otherwise you risk to loose your SSD.

A lot of issues in basic monitoring tools

By Alexander
Rated 2 out of 5
Date: 2022-10-23

When you start using it, it looks nice and fancy. They added support for wireless, cloud, different codec, but basic monitoring tools have bugs that mislead you. Eg zebra is off to ~5% - it start alerting sooner then zebra in camera or event then their own waveform, f-log monitoring with LUTS is a joke - levels handled incorrectly and output is clipped in shadows and highlights, when recording footage from Fuji cameras, files contain incorrect metadata. Company is definitely underinvesting into fixing the issues and focusing in adding new features to sell more devices. Buy, if you know what you do, have time to debug the issues or you don't care to much about what you see on your monitor. Otherwise consider alternatives.

Perfect for big shoots.

This was exactly what I needed for an external monitor and an added bonus that it record's directly to the monitor in Apple ProRes. It really helps out on my bigger shoots and is beneficial to my workflow during the editing process. I highly recommend if you're looking for a monitor and external recorder!

Simply Excellent

Very bright and crisp. It has many helpful functions and codecs and is user friendly. You can pre-load your LUTs or looks and bring up all the exposure tools you could need and set frame guides. Playback is much easier than doing it via the camera. It also pulls power on battery reasonably efficiently. Highly recommended, especially for the DSLR/Mirrorless user!

An excellent value

If you are a hardcore videographer, then the larger (and more expensive) recording monitors may be a better fit for you, but for a hybrid shooter like me, a 5-inch recording monitor is perfect combo of fit and function... and price. An excellent value.

How did I ever shoot without i

Such an excellent companion tool with my Sony. It allows better focus and peace of mind that the focus points are true. The fact that it can be used as a recorder and allow higher resolutions is godsend. Also, to be able to capture more than 30 minute segments allows for a better flow

Everything is great except one thing...

The price of the SSD drive is excessive but it is well built. The monitor itself is great. No complaints.

How does this attach to your camera? What else would I need? I have a Canon 7D Mark II. Will sound work?
Asked by: Linda
Yes, The Atomos Ninja V will work with your Canon 7D and it will capture audio though the HDMI output of your camera. I recommend a shoe mount from Atomos listed below. Also you will need to add a Mini to HDMI cable to connect the camera to the Ninja V. Does this recorder record Prores RAW?
Asked by: Maksim
Yes it does, however the only camera's that we are aware of which will have the ability to work with the Ninja V for Prores RAW are the Nikon Z series of cameras, B&H # NIZ6, and that will be through future firmware updates. https://bhpho.to/2wfsMn9

Can this recorder record RAW / Prores RAW from FS5?
Asked by: Maksim
We're afraid not. The FS5 only outputs RAW through SDI, with the RAW Firmware Upgrade B&H # SOCBKZFS5RIF . This unit has HDMI inputs only. You would want to look at the Shogun Flame or Shogun Inferno instead, both of which support RAW through SDI. Asked by: Olivier
We're afraid not. That part will not work with the Ninja V. The Ninja V has a Sony NP-F style battery plate only, we are not aware of a solution that will allow you to use LP-E6 batteries instead. Keep in mind that NP-F style batteries can offer a lot more power, which is why that is the system used with this monitor. Also, this kit comes with 2 NP-F style batteries and a charger.

Is it compatible with my EOS60D camera? Second question: Does the new Atomos sync module works with the discontinued Assassin ? Thank you
Asked by: Matthew
Hello Matthew, technically there is nothing we don't "work" with, however the reason why we say it isn't compatible is because the source (camera) would not be able to turn off the overlays, which in result, be recorded on the video with all the information. If you can turn it off, it can work fine. As for your second question, no unfortunately because it need the expansion port and currently only the NINJA V has that expansion.
