Canon SX70 HS Reviews

Perfect for birding!

I bought the SX70 HS so I didn't have to carry my Canon EOS 5D III for birding. It is so much lighter. The zoom range is phenomenal. The picture quality is okay but you need plenty of light. Even in hazy days you will need to up the ISO which gets very grainy. I had to get used to the button placement which differs a lot from a full frame camera. I customized the AE Lock button as my AF button. I wish Canon would at least include a lens hood. Have not done any video yet but if you need an external mic you will need to get an attachable cold shoe. I bought one that connects to the 1/4 20 screw mount at the bottom of the camera. The camera is also handy for conference events where you can't get close to your subjects on stage. I'll be using it primarily for bird identification and confirmation. The camera won't win me any awards but it gets the job done!

Having a tough time, so far wasted time registering this camera on the Canon website provided.. Looks like SX70HS is not a US model covered by Canon US.

Great Camera

The Canon SX 70 HS is a point and shoot camera with an exceptional ability to zoom from 24mm to 1365mm. That in itself gives it great versatility in shooting in different photo circumstances. The picture quality overall is very good. The light weight provides for excellent portability. The two drawbacks are that it doesn't perform well in low light and the maximum F stop is 8. Overall however, a great hybrid choice especially when you don't have to be burdened with a heavy telephoto lens.

It's a great travel camera!

Great travel camera! It is excellent during daylight hours. The zoom lens is phenomenal and the size and weight of the camera and lens makes it a joy to carry all day. One of the shortcomings is noise in low light. It takes the place of almost all of my lenses with the optical 21-1365mm equivalent lens! And the 5-stop optical stabilization makes it a joy to hand-hold.

A marvelous light weight sophisticated DSLR

A very recent purchase, I am absolutely delighted with my camera. It is about one-half the weight of my previous Canon Rebel, has more capability, and is as sophisticated as I could have hoped for. Nearly all of photography with the previous Rebel was taken using Program (P) option, and the SX 70 offers this choice along with 12 additional choices. The example photo was taken at Little Island 14th Street/10th avenue looking at the Statue of Liberty, roughly 6 miles away. Enough Said!

This is a very complicated camera with many features. I have downloaded the instruction book, but much of the instructions are ambiguous. Is there a class on line that I can take?

Protect your xs50. Sorry to have to replace mine with this xs70. Point and sh-sh-shoot. Maybe. Capturing still life is easy, otherwise best to be an advanced photographer.
