Westcott Flex Cine Bi-Color Overview

This 1 x 2' Westcott Flex Cine Bi-Color Mat produces 3900 lux of daylight-balanced light with a nominal beam angle of 140°. This flexible mat features hook-and-loop fabric edging, as well as grommits for mounting, and it incorporates magnetic metal-capped corners allowing you to easily mount it on virtually any metallic surface. The color temperature of the light's output is variable from 2800 to 6000K which makes it a good match when shooting exteriors, while the high CRI and TLCI provides excellent color reproduction. The mat is capable of producing flicker-free output from 1 to 100% of its brightness when connected to a Flex Cine Wireless Dimmer (not included). For the mat to function you will need to connect it to a Flex Cine Wireless Dimmer, and power it with a 26V V-mount battery or power supply.

The Flex Cine Mat features hook-and-loop fabric, grommets, and metal-capped corners that are magnetic, which can all be used for mounting (Optionally a yoke and flex mount are available separately)

Westcott Flex Cine Bi-Color Reviews

Review of older version after 5 years of use.

I bought the first generation of these years ago. I use it as my key light in a silk flex. The quality of the the light itself is great. The build however is rather disappointing. If you think you can just fold this up and store them is a mistake. After years of use I have many dead LEDs. The cables haven't survived years of many shoots. The controller LED is now losing it's own LEDs to indicate your CCT and INT. If you are handy with a soldering iron then perhaps you can keep them well maintained. I reached out to them and they said they couldn't fix the dead LEDs. Sorry but these are not road ready. Maybe in the studio they could last.

Beautiful Light!

These lights are absolutely fantastic. The quality of the light is unparalleled. I use them primarily for headshots. I have even travelled (locally) with them to client sites and they did not disappoint. It's a great investment.

I have the older version - these fix its issues

I have the original version of these lights and it's been love-hate. In terms of performance - light output and light quality, the lights are nice - zero complaints in that regard. But usability was awful! I bought a pair of Wesctott 1x2 bi-color lights because I needed high-CRI soft lights with enough output to hit EV 10 @ ISO 400, 3 ft. These lights did that. But usability was awful. The light mat itself was not heavy, but when mounted on its frame with the diffuser it was too heavy for the stand mount it came with. Repositioning the light was an exercise in frustration, the mount was just too wimpy for the light to stay where you put it. What it needed was a nice, solid, yoke mount. The controller worked fine but had no mounting attachment or strap - it literally hung from the light by its hardwired cord. Thinking back on all the pro photo influencers who made videos raving about how great the light was - what were these folks paid to completely overlook significant flaws? With that being said, these lights lit a lot of product shots and videos and did it well. It's gratifying to see that Westcott has nicely addressed the usability shortcomings.

Not worth the $$$

Issues right out the gate with this light. Dimmer is always cutting off and now not working with specific K settings

Expensive and good

There are plenty of budget light mats available that will get most of the job done, but for higher-level demands, the Westcott performs much better and the higher output matters. As a previous review complains about, every LED on the mat is a source and can create shadow-stepping if not modified (not a reason to complain, btw b/c that is how light works). The higher output of the Westcott allows for proper modification to eliminate stepping. If you WANT harder shadows, don't get a panel light; get a small single-source. These are designed to provide a larger source that will fit in a tight space, which is very hard to accomplish prior to adaptation of LEDs. Before, to create a panel of light, we had to take a small single source and modify it into a larger one... this product cuts out a lot of previously needed infrastructure. I gave it 4 stars because the pricing is a little high. There just isn't much competition, so they get away with it. At a 30% cost reduction these would be killer.

Not a great light source for a few reasons.

I should start by saying that I have the older version of this kit but many of the same problems will be present. The main issue with this light that I have would really be a problem with any LED panel, and that is because it’s not a single light source but many little lights. If this is not really diffused, and in some cases, even with diffusion, it will cause multiple shadows to occur and your image. This problem gets worse the closer the light is so forget product photography, but even as an interview light kit, you’ll see it more on your background but it’s there on the face as well. I have to use these with both diffusion panels on and then threw a scrim to create a decent light source but I don’t always want super soft light. Unfortunately that’s all you can get with this kit. I hope this is helpful and as mentioned, I’d guess that this could be an issue with any LED panel. This is just a very expensive one to learn that with.

Great concept but flimsy and with faulty connections

I live in Ecuador and was extremely excited to test in this stunning piece of equipment in the Amazon jungle. However, within minutes upon unboxing and connecting the mat to the dimmer and to the corresponding power source, the mat would not stay on for longer than 42 seconds. Upon examination of the dimmer, I discovered that several internal components were not properly connected and some were even broken. I tried to fix some of the issues in the dimmer myself and actually succeeded. Then, I discovered an additional faulty connection within the 9-prong connector of the mat itself. Since I could not solve that second issue myself, I took the whole set to a specialist for diagnosis, but even the specialist has not been able to fix it, although he does tell me that it does not look like the whole rig can withstand work in the field and discouraged me to even use it outdoors. The Westcott team replied promptly and told me they would gladly receive the whole rig to fix it. Although I appreciate the offer, sending this back to the US would imply major shipping costs from and to Ecuador again, and even then, I would be left without a lighting gear for months with no guarantee that they could fix it. Just make sure to request the gear to be tested before they ship it, especially if you live outside the US.

Absolutely a game changer

The lighting produced by the flex kit is just amazing compared to my old continuous lights. For headshot photography there's just nothing better. It's pricey but it absolutely is worth every penny in my opinion.

What’s the Tungsten Equivalent for the power output?
Asked by: Gregory
LEDs are much more efficient than tungsten light sources. The 2 x 2 Mat is an LED mat that provides 7400 Lux at 1 meter over a 2' x 2' surface area. The larger surface area provide a very different light quality than an unmodified tungsten bulb and so a direct equivalency of the 200w driven LED mat to a tungsten bulb source would be difficult.
