Sony 24mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

Combining a favored wide-angle focal length with an especially bright design, the FE 24mm f/1.4 GM from Sony is a fast, versatile lens well-suited to landscape, nature, and street photography. Its wide-but-usable perspective is complemented by the f/1.4 maximum aperture, which excels in low-light conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field. The optical design incorporates three extra-low dispersion elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and two XA (extreme aspherical) elements, which significantly control spherical aberrations for a high degree of image sharpness and clarity. Additionally, a Nano AR coating has been applied to limit ghosting and lens flare for increased contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

For controlling focus, a Direct Drive SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) is employed that is quick and quiet, and also lends more responsive control for manual focus operation. The lens also sports a dust- and moisture-sealed design and fluorine-coated front lens element to support shooting in inclement conditions and a dedicated focus hold button, AF/MF switch, and manual aperture ring lend further control while shooting.

As part of Sony's esteemed G Master series, this lens is designed to achieve notably high resolution and sharpness through the correction of a wide variety of spherical and chromatic aberrations. Additionally, these lenses feature robust and intuitive-to-handle physical designs to benefit both photography and cine applications.
Versatile wide-angle prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used on APS-C models where it provides a 36mm equivalent focal length.
Notably fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also affords increased control over depth of field.
Two XA elements are incorporated into the optical design, which features superior surface precision for effective control over astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other spherical aberrations.
Three extra-low dispersion elements are featured in the lens design and help to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
A Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
A Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor AF system and internal focus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance and also contributes to more natural, intuitive manual focus control.
A focus hold button is present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
Physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications.
Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
Fluorine-coated front element resists dust, moisture, and fingerprints and is easy to clean.
Rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

    Sony 24mm f/1.4 reviews

FE 24mm f/1.4 GM Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The BEST all around lens on the MARKET! Forever, I have been a fan of wide-angle. From films to photos. Portraits to landscapes, everything is amazing with wide angle. I have gone through many lenses, the 25mm f/2 by Zeiss, the 35mm 1.4 GM from Sony, the 24-70 2.8 GM from Sony, and finally now I have a lens that I love every aspect of. The 24mm 1.4 is lightning fast, 4x lighter than the 24-70 and has better bokeh and corner sharpness than any other Sony lens available right now. The 1.4 paired with a wide angle is absolutely beautiful. This lens fits on my gimbal, is less expensive than any other G Master and will never come off my camera. Thank you Sony for continuing to listen to your audience and give us what we want.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific, fun all around performer in small light package I bought this lens mainly for shooting astro/aurora stuff  - a role in which it excels due to its low comma and fast aperture.  Ive also discovered that the fast aperture/shallow depth of field in combination with wide angle of view opens some very fun creative doors, from wide angle portraits to still lifes.  The lens is equally at home shooting landscapes, being nicely sharp corner to corner even wide open.  And its OK for infrared photography up to f/4 and even f/5.6, where a faint but easily correctable hotspot appears.  One downside - there is some fairly significant vignetting with the lens however.  All-in-all, Im very happy with the lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best wide angle for my mirrorless Sony system! I love the G Master line of lens because its so similar to Carl Zeiss. The 24mm GM is the best wide angle currently out for the Sony Mirrorless system. I also own the 25mm Zeiss Batis but this GM is beyond better in sharpness, the colors and even when it comes to ghosting/chromatic aberration. The 24GM gives you an excellent results if youre like myself and shoot wide open aperture. The wait is over, because Sony has made a lens that photographers and even videographers can completely be happy about. If there is a sixth star, this lens definatly completes it. BUY IT, youll thank me after.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Relatively small, lightweight, snappy and sharp. For a 1.4 this lens is actually pretty small and looks right at home on an a7iii/a9. Focuses quickly (although a tad bit noisy at smaller apertures). I love the aperture ring on the lens. I have no real complaints so far. It's magical in low light, and creates beautiful images. I'm likely going to be selling my Zeiss Batis 25mm now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most Perfect Sony Lens Yet Aside from the superb sharpness, colors, bokeh rendering and lack of distortion, what I really love about this lens is its compact size. My other Sony lenses are amazing, but this one is just the right size and weight for a Sony a7riii camera. You can easily walk around for hours and hours without the camera feeling front-heavy - exactly what you want in a fast wide-angle lens like this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing but has ? issue First off, this lens produces spectacular images..just amazing rendering and sharpness.  As good as it gets.  However my copy makes audible noise when focusing ? aperture blade and motor movement.  Not only can I hear this, I actually can feel inner components moving.  Sony told me the lens should be silent so I have requested an exchange which B&H is doing right now.  Will update review when second copy has been received and I can compare its performance to the first.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from my new best friend. Im a documentary/journalist video shooter and I love this lens for my work. Like other Sony GM lenses the picture quality is mouth watering. I love the colors it produces. The size is compact and it feels pretty solid (although, still not as robust as Canon L glass). I bought this lens for the quality and AF that I occasionally use in my video work and which Sony is finally improving in their A7 series cameras. However, my one complaint exists for this camera like it does with all Sony glass, which is that the MF is horrible. I dont care how many fancy terms Sony uses to describe its new manual focus system, it will never compare to a good ol mechanical MF. (If you shoot only MF maybe consider the Sigma, which is a lot cheaper).  Its a pricey little fellow, but the MF issue aside, its an amazing lens if youre looking for an ultra fast fixed 24mm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from sensational sharpness and color rendition light and sturdy, and sharper than any 24mm lens that I used such as Batis 25mm, Nikon 24mm F1.8G, Canon 24mm F2.8 IS, ZE25mm, and etc. and nice clor rendition.
