Sigma 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports Overview

By B&H Photo's

A single zoom covering a huge 10x range, the Canon EF-mount Sigma 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports Lens is a versatile optic well-suited for a variety of subjects, including portraiture, sports, and wildlife. Its advanced optical design incorporates one SLD element and three FLD elements, which help to greatly suppress chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for improved clarity and color accuracy. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied to individual elements to control flare and ghosting when working in strong lighting conditions.

Complementing the optical performance is a Hyper Sonic Motor that provides quick and a quiet autofocus performance, along with an Intelligent OS system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake by up to four stops. The physical design of the lens also incorporates several seals to guard against dust and moisture, and a water- and oil-repellent coating has been applied to the exposed elements to prevent moisture, fingerprints, or smudges from sticking to the surface.

As part of the Sports line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to offer excellent optical performance, speed, and other customizable features that make it an ideal choice for wildlife, sports, action, and other fast-moving subjects.
Wide-ranging super telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however is also suitable for APS-C models where it provides a 96-960mm equivalent focal length range.
One Special Low Dispersion (SLD) element and three F Low Dispersion (FLD) elements are featured in the optical design and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy, as well as spherical aberrations for reduced distortion and improved sharpness throughout the zoom range.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Front and rear lens elements have been treated with a water- and oil-repellent coating to benefit working in harsh environmental conditions.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
An Intelligent Optical Stabilizer system minimizes the appearance of camera shake by up to four stops to benefit making sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.
Tripod collar has a rotating design and the replaceable foot is Arca-type compatible for easy mounting.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.
Compatible with optional Sigma 1.4x and 2x teleconverters.

I just received 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 and it's only seen first light for a couple of minutes. I tossed it on my 60D and shot a couple frames. I threw the M50 on it for a minute and had to laugh, worked great but you carry this rig by the lens and not the body. It also did exactly what it was supposed to do on the tiny M50. I received the lens a couple days after placing my order. I don't think it would be possible to package an item any better unless you wrapped it in a metal box. It really was perfect!

I love this lens. It is sharp and fun to use. It is very heavy but when using with my Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II it becomes a lot of fun and the pictures very sharp. I was a little reluctant to purchase this lens thinking it would not be sharp throughout the length but I am pleasantly surprised.

Yup it's true...

What they say is true! SHARP AND HEAVY! Auto focus might be an issue on really small subjects but seems workable, only had it a day though. For most autofocus situations it's fast and accurate. Might just break my wrist after an hour or less of hand holding. Get a good mono pod or light but sturdy tripod. GREAT BUILD QUALITY!

This is heavy, but I've already taken some great shots of my son while wrestling and now we can't wait for racing season to start up and get some awesome action on the track as well!

probaly it would be a good lens overall but i received a soft copy im testing since 5 days but my results are not as sharp as my contemporary lens. thought things will improve and they are gone worse idk why sigma does this, previously my contemporary was sharp where as other users use to complain now my 60-600mm sports is soft af and reviews says its sharp so basically sigma is not doing good Quality test. overall BH photovideo did good time delivery ,no complains but very disappointed that i was switching to sony 200-600mm but got this instead and now stuck with delivery options n return as i reside in middleeast.

Heavy lens with a lot of limitations

I bought this lens after doing a photo safari in Botswana where all the guides were using Sigma's 150-600. They recommended this lens to me. Sorry sigma, it is not a good lens. I just returned from a 5 week trip to Africa. This was the only lens I took. What I am realizing from my experience: 1. The lens is extremely heavy. Hand-holding this lens for any length of time requires upper body strength that I simply do not have. Holding it in position to wait for 'the shot' (the kingfisher to fly, the cheetah to pounce) is essentially impossible. 2. The lens does not have sharp focus beyond about 400 mm zoom. I am having to do a lot of sharpening in lightroom and Topaz. I am the type of photographer that wants a good image from the camera, and one that does not require a lot of artificial processing afterwards. 3. The lens works only when there is a significant amount of light. Because of a strangely extended rainy season this year, there were many cloudy days on the trip. The best I could get was an ISO of 12,800. Topaz did not clean up the noise to my satisfaction. The only shots I am happy with are those that came in the mid afternoon when the sun was out. Forget about using this lens in the morning or late afternoon (which is typically when the critters are more active). I wish I did not sell my Canon 400mm lens to buy this lens. If I could, I would switch back immediately.

Can this lens be used for motor racing events?? I currently use a prime 300 2.8 is i need to add tele converter to make it longer and remove it when i do not need it. or what do you suggest for 2nd option lens??
Asked by: John
Yes this 60-600 would work well for motor racing if you currently use 300mm 2.8 and want a longer or wider lens where you easily zoom. The downside is the aperture it narrower on the 60-600 so not as good in low light. Motor racing during the day shouldn't be a problem though. Another option would be a Sigma 150-600 Sports if you don't need to go as wide as 60mm. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1082152-REG/sigma_150_600mm_f_5_6_3_dg_os.html

It has two holes as commented earlier. However, the foot is designed for a quick release mount. Why would you not put a QR clamp on your tripod or monopod for interchangeability or convenience?

Does this work with part # Sigma TC-2001 2x Teleconverter for Canon EF?
Asked by: Eddie
Yes, the Sigma TC-2001 2x Teleconverter for Canon EF may connect to the Sigma 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports for your usage needs. However, do note that you will have to focus the lens manually as autofocus would not be compatible with this setup. The lens would become the equivalent of a 120-1200mm f/9-13 lens.
