Sigma 28mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Overview

By B&H Photo's

A favored wide-angle prime, the Canon EF-mount Sigma 28mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens is a versatile lens with a classic broad field of view that suits everything from street shooting to landscape photography. Impressively bright, the fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is ideal for working in low-light conditions and also offers greater control over depth of field for isolating subject matter. An advanced optical design is employed, which uses both low dispersion glass and aspherical elements to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations for greater clarity and sharpness. A Super Multi-Layer Coating is also featured, and suppresses ghosting and flare for improved contrast and color accuracy.

In addition to its optical merits, this 28mm f/1.4 also sports a Hyper Sonic Motor to produce quick, smooth, and quiet autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. The physical design features a brass bayonet mount, which offers rigidity and mounting precision along with a seal to guard against dust and moisture. Additionally, a rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Wide-angle prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however is also suitable for use with APS-C models where it provides a 44.8mm equivalent focal length.
Impressively bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Two F Low Dispersion (FLD) and three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements are featured in the optical design, and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Three aspherical elements are used to help limit distortion and spherical aberrations and also contributes to greater overall sharpness and accurate rendering.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.
Protective coating has been applied to the front element and is both water and oil-repellent to aid in cleaning.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

Sigma 28mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Reviews

Sigma with 3d pop?

I expected sharp images from other reviews and past experience with Sigma, but worried they would be sterile, flat, and without the depth of contrast from my stable of Zeiss lenses. I am very impressed however with the combination of sharpness and contrast which creates a very strong 3d image. I haven't shot anything from Canon or Sigma with this much depth, and I don't regret going with the 28mm over the Zeiss competition. For others like myself cross shopping against Zeiss, it's not a strong contrast like the distagon 35mm f2 but it is present and neutral. Shadow detail/recovery as well has control of highlights surprised me again, my Canon (eos R) sensor was the limit rather than optical limits. Flare resistance is a weakness noted by reviewers and I found the highlight control sufficient to overcome the loss of contrast in post. Harsh light in landscape scenarios aren't handled as gracefully as my Zeiss compliment. Color is nuanced but not overly saturated. I greatly miss the manual focus of Zeiss and almost considered returning it for that reason, but it produces some special images in a form factor and focal length I needed for my travel bag. If your goal is a transparent window into the scene, this lens will provide that. If enamored with the drawing style of lenses past this isn't the best choice, but it does allow flexibility in post to extract shadow and color nuance to create a more classic look.

I like this lens.

I own two other Sigma lenses. This lens is a wonderful product. Sharp images and quick focus response. Great landscape lens.

Blows away my other ART lenses, Amazing 3D image

I recently purchased the 28mm, but hadn't taken the time to compare it to my other ART lenses - 24mm, 35mm and 50mm. After doing a quick comparison I was blown away by the image quality of the 28mm. So much so that now I'll be waiting for the 40mm to go on sale. I don't even want to use my other ART lenses anymore - I'm putting them up for sale. I have also owned the Zeiss ZE line in the past and the Sigma ART 28mm has the same wonderful 3D Micro contrast as the Zeiss 50mm Makro-Planar F/2, but the 28mm is even better. The Sigma ART 28mm also has spectacular color rendering - much, much better than the other ART lenses - it's as if the other ART lenses have a slightly colored filter on them - the 28mm image looks perfect from a color standpoint. Get it on sale and you can't go wrong.

Exceptional optical quality! Perfect!

I purchased this lens when it was on sale, based on its reputation as one of the best optical lenses made. The quality rivals the Zeiss Otus 28 mm lens, and that's saying something. The best part of this design, is that it's optically perfect while producing artistic images. This is a significant achievement, unlike most highly corrected lenses which produce sterile images. Highly recommended!

I suggest this lens in lue of the older 35mm despite the pricy cost. Very clear and tack sharp. Love the length and weight.

Best 28mm for the best camera platform

By Thomas

I was shocked to see that so few people rated this lens! 28mm is super underrated in my opinion. I find that with a good 28 I can ditch the 24 and the 35 and shoot for hours without the need to swap between lenses. The next wider prime in my kit is the 21mm Loxia and they are far enough apart that it's very clear when I need to switch. But the main reason why the 28mm is so great is because when I crop an image to a 4x5 ratio, I get the same FOV as the classic landscape lenses of the past, like a 65mm on 6x7 or a 120mm on 4x5. So for anyone who wants that classic feel on a modern full frame camera, the Sigma 28mm is the best option. As for the lens, it's what we've come to expect from the Sigma Art series. Modern build quality, premium feel and way oversized. Its insanely sharp across the whole frame at all but the most extreme apertures. At typical landscape apertures it outresolves the 42mp sensor of the A7rII by quite a bit it seems. I wouldn't be surprised if it still looked great on a 100mp sensor. I feel like I have tried all 24s and 35s for the Sony E, only to realize that the solution was this 28mm. So if you find yourself in that situation, just do yourself a favor and grab it. You won't regret it :)

Special lens worth having....3 dimensional

Like most photographers you want to limit the lenses you own so as to reduce costs and weight. In weight category you might do better however, if image character that instantly stands out in sharp natural but vivid color and a pronounced 3 dimensional feel is what you want, you would be hard pressed to find better. Beautiful complex optical formula that few companies will venture toward in the near future it is instantly recognizable as soon as you look into the viewfinder. This lens is worth the weight. No amount of post-processing will bring an above average lens close to this one.

I can't express my disappointment

I bought this to use on my 1dx2 and 3 bodies. Got it right out of the box, and it's big and feels solid. Put it on a body and focused at something a couple of feet away - good. 4 feet away - fine. 10 feet away - not sharp. So I started testing it at various distances and found that as soon as I focused on something more than about 6 feet away it would focus about half of the way in front of the lens. Focus at 10 feet, 5 feet was in focus. Focus at 20 feet, 10 feet was in focus. 30/15, etc. Incredibly disappointing. I bought the 40mm at the same time and it seems fine. And I own the 105 1.4 and it is one of my favorite lenses ever. I'm baffled by this, but it seems to be too much to adjust away, so back it went.

How does the Sigma 28mm F/1.4 Art lens compare to the Zeiss Otus 28mm F/1.4 lens, in house (lab) and in the field minus the consideration of weather-proofing and automatic focusing?
Asked by: Radcliffe
I shot this lens alongside the Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 and Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.4E ED on my Nikon D800. What I found is that the Zeiss is the best of the three, but it's not leaps and bounds ahead of Sigma and Nikon, which aren't far behind Zeiss at all. I thought the Sigma was great, even wide open at f/1.4. For optimal focus, I'd recommend live view, especially when shooting wide open at f/1.4 or going for shallow depth of field.
