Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Overview

Designed within the rigorous tolerances of a cine lens, the Sony E-mount Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens is a wide normal-length lens characterized by a bright design and sophisticated optical layout. The fast f/1.4 maximum aperture helps to achieve shallow depth of field and selective focus effects, and also suits working in difficult lighting conditions. The optical design incorporates a series of low dispersion and aspherical elements, which help to improve sharpness and clarity by controlling both spherical and chromatic aberrations. A Super Multi-Layer Coating is also featured, and helps to minimize flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, the lens sports a Hyper Sonic Motor to produce quick, smooth, and quiet autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. The physical design features a brass bayonet mount, which offers rigidity and mounting precision along with a seal to guard against dust and moisture. Additionally, a rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Short-normal prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however is also suitable for APS-C models where it provides a 60mm equivalent focal length.
Impressively bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Three F Low Dispersion (FLD) and three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements are featured in the optical design, and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
One aspherical element is used to help limit distortion and spherical aberrations and also contributes to greater overall sharpness and accurate rendering.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.
Protective coating has been applied to the front element and is both water and oil-repellent to aid in cleaning.

Looks great . . not as quick as Sony lens with eye tracking AF.

First of all, everyone's review has stated how great this lens is. I will submit the following photo I took near my home( 3 miles away) and provide photo data. May 30th, 2021: SIGMA 40mm DGDN ART 1.4 @ f1.4; ISO 100 ; EV 0; 25 second exposure @ 9:54 P.M. on Sony A7RIII on a carbon fiber tripod.

Supreme Sharpness and Microcontrast

I am in love with this lens. Colors are vivid out of camera and very little post-processing is required to make them look great for my general hobby and family photos. I am using this lens on a Sony A7RII and A7RIV. It keeps up well with both cameras and can be extremely fun to pixel-peep with. I have noticed the lens lags a bit behind my Sony branded glass when it comes to autofocus - I get less shots that are perfectly in focus overall. However, the colors and COMPLETE LACK OF ANY CHROMATIC ABBERATION, make this lens an 10/10 for me. Can't wait to spend more time learning how to maximize this lens's potential

Nearly perfect

Solid build, super clean images, super sharp - its a perfect addition for studio work and its versatile enough for location, even street photography.  It is heavy but no more than you would expect from a Sigma Art lens, its well worth the price you pay and the weight you carry

Pros: - The sharpest lens I have ever used - Beautiful bokeh - Sharp and smooth focus ring - Top tier build quality - Fast and accurate autofocus  - Great for low light sessions Cons: - Extremely heavy and big: this normally would not bother me but it did lead to fatigue on longer shoots This lens earns my highest recommendation!

THE SHARPEST LENS I OWN!!!!!!

First off i LOVE this lens!!!! I was debating between getting this or the Sony G MASTER 135mm 1.8. I wanted a FAST lens, a PORTRAIT lens, a lens I could use for ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY, and a lens for LANDSCAPE photography. BONUS: BOKEA! Needless to say I am happy with my decision. The following photo was taken of my Yorkie: NATALIE Camera Settings: ISO 2000, 0EV, @1.4, 1/160th sec. on a Sony A6500.Handheld.

This is an outstanding quality lens! Extremely sharp and full of contrast. This is one of the best lens I've ever used from a quality standpoint on FF. This is like an Otus lens with AF. The only con is the size and weight.

The best 40mm lens you can buy

By far the best Lens I have ever used. Yes it's big, yes it's heavy. That aside. If you are looking for the sharpest 40 mm lens out there this is it. Sigma made absolutely the best lens they could when they built this lens. The built quality is excellent. Thank you B and H.
