Bright f/1.4 maximum aperture excels in low-light conditions and also affords increased control over depth of field for achieving selective focus effects.
One special low dispersion (SLD) element reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve greater clarity and color accuracy.
Two aspherical elements are used to limit distortion and spherical aberrations and also contribute to greater overall sharpness and accurate rendering.
A super multilayered coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
A stepping AF motor benefits both photographers and videographers with its fast, precise, and near-silent performance.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust and splash resistant.

Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Reviews

Great image quality and price

I really like this lens. It's lighter and smaller than it's legacy counterpart. The lack of aperture ring, to me, is an advantage.... The legacy lenses always seem to get knocked out of position. Just use the command dial. This thing is sharp and fast as well! The only minis is a bit of barrel distortion, but it can be fixed in post easily.

Great tight lens!

Personally, I think every kit should have a fast 85mm, and this does not disappoint. It's small, lightweight, and does the job perfectly.

Great for photos and videos

The classic portrait focal length, with a field of view equivalent to an 85mm on full frame, with nice neutral bokeh. As a bonus, it's also great for video for tighter framing. A great complement to the Sigma 30mm f1/4 for a consistent look. All of that at a relatively low price -- truly a great value.

really great for the price!

Great lens with amazing image quality! The only fault I can find with it after using it for a while is that the autofocus could be a smidgen faster in low light - but that's about it! It produces nice portraits with great sharpness. For that price, it's unbeatable!

I have an XT3 and XT-20 and purchased the Sigma 56 1.4 about 2 weeks ago. Other than a missing aperture ring and a 1/2 stop, for half the cost of the Fuji 56mm 1.2, the Sigma 56 1.4 will give it a run for your money. I had the original Fuji 56 1.2 and sold it a year ago. For my use, the Sigma is a better and more fun lens. It is sharper than the Fuji, faster focus, smaller, and lighter. The color rendering and contrast are about the same with way less purple fringing when using wide open. An aperture ring would have been nice but I don't really miss it. This is a keeper. Thank you B&H for getting this lens out to me so quickly.

Excellent 3rd Party Lens for Fuji-X

This has quickly become a favorite lens of mine. It does well in portraits with the fast aperture allowing for smooth and pleasant bokeh with good subject isolation. It's a sharp lens throughout the whole frame at higher apertures and is still quite good wide open. The build quality is excellent and is a mix of metal and high quality plastics and rubber and maintains a premium feel overall. The focus ring is dampened well and turns smoothly. The lack of an aperture ring did not bother me at all, which I thought it might. Readjusting to using the front dial was very easy and is now my preferred way to shoot. The lens hood is also particularly good and well made it's easy to attach and isn't made of brittle cheap plastics like some other lens hoods I've used.

NO FLASH PORTRAITS

I was looking for a fast lens that would allow me to shoot semi-spontanious portraits of people at our social organization. I was trying to capture images of people expressing true joy. I wanted to avoid using a flash, which usually causes irritation. I started by joking with them and telling them about the person who hated to have their picture taken, and how they took the chance. That they liked the picture and posted it as their Facebook profile image. This has been working so well that people are asking for photo's. Also I tell them that I will not post it anywhere without their permission. The camera is an Olympus OM-D E-M1 MkII, it has a wonderful auto focus, and stabilization. I can shoot short bursts while I am joking around with them, then select later. 56mm gets me in their face without putting the camera in their face. The speed, pleasant bokeh, natural color, and apparent depth of this combination really helps; It seems to enhance the beautiful energy of someone being really happy. This is my first fast Lens, so I can not compare it to anything except that of not having a fast lens. I would have a much harder time being spontaneous with a slower setup. This lens is great! The only thing I don't really like is the tactile inconsistency of focus by wire. But most of the time I am enjoying the best auto--focus I have ever experienced, and seldom even use the manual focus.

So good

This thing is quite sharp wide open. Sharper than most lenses when they are stopped down. The out of focus areas are nice. For years I used my oly 45/1.8 for portraits, and I loved the results, but this sigma is on another level. I doubt the old 45 will see much use anymore. I wish I'd bought this a long time ago.
