Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports Overview

Prized for event, portraiture, and sports shooting, the Canon EF-mount Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports Lens is a flexible telephoto zoom characterized by its bright and sophisticated design. The fast constant f/2.8 maximum aperture excels in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects. In regard to the optical layout, an impressive 10 low dispersion elements are used to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy. A Super Multi-Layer Coating is also featured and helps to suppress ghosting and flare when working in strong lighting conditions.

Complementing the optics is an Intelligent OS system, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper results when shooting handheld. A Hyper Sonic Motor is also used to provide quick and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. The physical design of the lens also incorporates several seals to guard against dust and moisture, and a water- and oil-repellent coating has been applied to the exposed elements to prevent moisture, fingerprints, or smudges from sticking to the surface. Additionally, a fixed rotating tripod collar is featured and has a removable Arca-type compatible foot for wide compatibility with different tripod or monopod heads.

As part of the Sports line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to offer excellent optical performance, speed, and other customizable features that make it an ideal choice for wildlife, sports, action, and other fast-moving subjects.
Versatile telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however is also suitable for APS-C models where it provides a 112-320mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
One Special Low Dispersion (SLD) element and nine F Low Dispersion (FLD) elements are featured in the optical design and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy, as well as spherical aberrations for reduced distortion and improved sharpness throughout the zoom range.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Front and rear lens elements have been treated with a water- and oil-repellent coating to benefit working in harsh environmental conditions.
Rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
An Intelligent Optical Stabilizer system minimizes the appearance of camera shake to benefit making sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.
Tripod collar has a rotating design and the replaceable foot is Arca-type compatible for easy mounting.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.
Compatible with optional Sigma 1.4x and 2x teleconverters.

When this will be delivered? Before Christmas?
Asked by: Ludwig
Unfortunately, we cannot state for certain. The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports Lens for Canon EF, B&H # SI7020028OSC, is a new item that has been announced, but which has not yet been released. As of the date of this reply, our website currently indicates the expected arrival date is December 19, 2018. As it is an estimated arrival date, there may be circumstances out of our control that may change the arrival date of the lens. Also, once the lens is in stock, it will depend on your shipping destination and the shipping option(s) that are available as to when you would receive the lens. Due to the closeness of the estimated arrival date to Christmas 2018, we cannot make any guarantees. As such, the best I can recommend would be to periodically check the inventory status of the lens on/near December 19, 2018, and if you see the lens is in stock, add the lens to your online shopping cart and go through the online order process to get to the shipping page to view the available shipping options to your shipping address, as well as the estimated arrival date for your chosen shipping method. I would recommend if you know you want the lens, it would be best to pre-order the lens, as all pre-orders will be shipped before the lens is listed as "In Stock" online or in our NYC Superstore, and they are shipped in the order in which they are received. Also, as we do not know how many pre-orders we will have, or how many lenses we will receive in the preliminary shipment, the earlier you order the lens, the better.

What size Luxgear do we need for zoom and focus?
Asked by: Philipp
This lens has an outer diameter of 94.2mm, we do not have a Cool Lux Gear that will be large enough for this lens. Instead we recommend the Wide Open Camera Universal Lens Gear, B&H # WILU. https://bhpho.to/2mtNn2G

Is the Intelligent Optical Stabilizer system more like software that reduces shake or more like OIS with mechanical reductions of shakiness?
Asked by: Ian
The lens has optical image stabilization. I imagine the intelligent part refers to the different modes you can set. One of the modes is better for tracking moving subjects and one is better for stationary subjects.
