ZEISS Batis 40mm f/2 CF Overview

  • 1Description

Offering a unique short-normal focal length with a close-focusing design, the Batis 40mm f/2 CF from ZEISS is a Sony E-mount prime further characterized by its advanced optical layout. Based on the Distagon design, this lens uses a series of aspherical and anomalous partial dispersion elements to greatly reduce color fringing, distortion, and other aberrations to realize sharp, clear, and color-accurate imagery. A floating elements system, coupled with the Close Focusing designation, is also employed for consistent performance when working with both near and far subjects. Additionally, an enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to reduce flare and ghosting for working in difficult lighting conditions.

Batis-series lenses are distinguished by their innovative use of an OLED display on the lens barrel, which highlights the focus distance and depth of field range for quickly recognizing your focusing parameters. As an autofocus lens, linear motors are used to deliver quick, quiet, and smooth focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. Additionally, the lens body also sports a dust- and moisture-sealed design to permit its use in trying environments.

Short normal-length prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 60mm equivalent focal length
Bright f/2 maximum aperture suits working in low-light conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Suitable for close-up shooting, this CF (Close Focusing) lens has a minimum focusing distance of 9.4", minimum working distance of 5.5", and a maximum magnification of 1:3.3.
Distagon optical concept affords high sharpness, well-corrected image quality from edge-to-edge, and very low field curvature.
Two aspherical elements, three elements made from anomalous partial dispersion glass, and one aspherical element also made from low dispersion glass are featured, and all contribute to significantly reducing chromatic and spherical aberrations, color fringing, and distortion for improved clarity, sharpness, and resolution.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.
Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range.
Integrated OLED display on the top of the lens shows the working focus distance as well as the depth of field range for quickly recognizing the parameters of focus in use, even when working in low-light conditions.
Linear motors benefit the autofocus performance of the lens and provide smooth, fast, and quiet operation. For manual focusing, a rubberized ring offers greater tactile control for precise placement of focus.
Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.

ZEISS Batis 40mm f/2 CF Reviews

Batis 40mm f/2 CF Lens for Sony E is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens.  Try it.  Go by the results. This lens is very sharp.  Great colors and contrast.  I have had no issues with eye AF, AF, or anything.  Photos I took with this lens just pop on my screen.  Even in grid and filmstrip views in Lightroom, the sharpness and color are very noticeable.  I have a lot of Sony EF lenses.  This is a standout.  I might have less use now for my awesome 55mm 1.8.  Yes, its that good.  Very versatile focal length, and with the close focus, wow.  Plenty wide for casual shooting, and lots of resolution for cropping if you cant switch to a longer lens.  Its exactly what I expected from Zeiss, and the type of usage intended.  Not sure why the critics are so confused.   This is a great lens.  I cant wait to use it for video.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compact beauty! At first I was disappointed with this lens because I was comparing it to my Sony Zeiss 50mm f1.4 which isnt quite fair.  However, when I simply looked an images taken with the 40/2 I began to appreciate how fantastic it was.  Quick and silent AF, wonderful color and contrast with very sharp (not crisp!) images from corner to corner, and I was won over.  On both the A7RIII and A7III it is a perfect size and weight for becoming my go-to walk-around lens!  It has found a permanent place in my heart and camera bag!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light. Fast. Perfect. I have now tested this lens against many others including the zeiss 35mm1.4, Voigtlander 40mm 1.2 , Minolta Rokkor 40mm f2 and various SONY G masters and what I have found overwhelmingly is perfection. Very clean, very sharp, incredibly fast auto focus compared to anything else I own. The only shortcoming is SOME of the background Bokeh balls have an octagon-like shape at certain distances. But most often looks perfect and smooth. Image quality is superb.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Zeiss, you can do better Maybe this lens can be pretty great at some point in the future, but out of the box it is quite disappointing. The Eye-AF consistently mis-focuses. This ruins an otherwise appealing package. The lack of AF/MF switch on the lens is quite frustrating. The lens is light and well balanced, but physically bigger than desirable (especially when compared to Zeiss 55mm f/1.8). Optically it is solid, but a high-res pairing like the A7R3 demands more than “solid” optics. Perhaps a firmware update fix to eye-AF can make this a 4/5. While it is a very useful lens, there are things that keep it from being truly great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens, with known caveats Pros: - Extremely sharp - Low chromatic aberration wide open - Smooth, buttery bokeh - Zeiss colors & pop - Fast to focus - Typical batis build quality Cons: - Expensive (obviously...) - The rumors are real: the lens does stop down from f2 to f2.8-f4 when focusing within a foot or so, without reporting the change in aperture. This can be annoying when focusing within that range, because what my A7ii cant expose properly, and the OOF areas can develop nonagonal structures, someone did a more in depth look here: https://30daysofbatis.com/blog?offset=1542664707467&reversePaginate=true. Not a big issue for me, but i know it may be for others. Zeiss has promised to release a firmware update to change this issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The ONE This is truly the best lens I have used. Ideally, one lens is all I need. This is that one lens. The size and weight are perfect for the A7R3. The picture quality is nothing short of stunning. The 40mm focal length is perfect. I found 35 to be a bit wide for my tastes, and 50 to be too tight. This lens fills that gap and makes foot zooming much easier. The close focusing works great. It can be used for portraits as well. This is the most versatile lens I have used. I look forward to using it to its fullest potential. I will not miss lens swapping!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Completing the set This 40mm lens completes my set of all 5 current marvelous Batis lenses.  I had high expectations for it after talking with photo friends who were strongly promoting the in between 40mm focal length.  It has been all I had hoped for and then some including the convenient close focusing.  Adding that feature was a brilliant move.  This lens is now the one on my Sony A7Riii camera most of the time. Completing the set has given me a very high performing relatively light weight pack -- 5 prime, extra quality, lenses.  Carrying  both my 7Riii and my A6500 camera gives the equivalent of 10 prime lens choices over a broad range.  The completion of a years long dream.  Equally consistent color, pleasing contrast, and wonderful resolution remains when switching between lenses.  The 40mm completes the mid zone with two lenses on either side.  It is delightful.  Thank you Zeiss!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Do-It-All Lens This lens definitely has the image quality and durability you expect from the Batis line. Its sharp with minimal distortions and great color. My favorite focal length has always been 35mm but Ive really come to appreciate the little bit of extra compression at 40mm for environmental portraits. As many have complained about, the aperture does stop down slightly near minimum focal distance. Your DoF is already so tiny at this point that I cant imagine why this is bothers anyone. The feature is meant to retain image sharpness.

At what distance does the Batis 40 stop down 1 stop?
Asked by: Shaun
The ZEISS Batis 2/40 CF is a versatile, all purpose lens and one of its benefits is due to its close focus (CF) capability: the ZEISS Batis 2/40 CF allows photographers to get incredibly close to the object they want to capture – the minimum distance between the object and camera sensor, measures just 9.4 inches / 24 centimeters. To ensure exceptional image quality at close range, the lens automatically stops down when it’s a short distance from the object. This ensures the ZEISS lens delivers the high contrast and resolution across the entire focus range that users have come to expect. We are currently developing a software update that will allow us to work within a larger focus range with a wide-open aperture. The update will be available to download for free from the ZEISS website in early 2019. We will notify all registered customers via email.

Autofocus noise it's normal for this lens ? My 25 and 85 Batis no sound when autofocus
Asked by: Alex
The Batis lenses use a silent AF motor and there should be noise coming from the lens. If this is the case with your lens, please initiate a service case by going to: https://zeiss.secure.force.com/CZPRepair/?page=1&region=Americas&area=consumer&lang=EN

Zeiss admitted an issue with the close focus aperture problem as well as with eye-AF, but as of February 2019 I haven’t heard their follow up response yet. Any word?

The firmware update is due April 2019. There are some explanations online about the expected improvements, so it's worth searching them out.

Craig, I'm curious as to how you determined the aperture is not f2 when close focusing? Are you sure that when you move closer to your subject that the light seen by the sensor is not changing? Have you contacted Zeiss about this? You are inferring that Zeiss is pulling a VW Diesel trick! :-)
Asked by: Kelly
Hey folks! I must admit my fault: I answered the question before looking at the specific case of the lens. I thought that Craig was talking some light loss and exaggerating. As I said, this should be expected from any lens that has good magnification. But after I saw a video posted by Phillip Bloom in his profile on Facebook, I finally understood that this Batis 40mm actually closes the aperture blades while you change the focus. And consequently not only the light loss is drastic, but also the DoF is affected. This is not normal and it's better for us to look at an answer from Zeiss staff themselves. One more time I apologize for my mistake.

Is this a US version of the lens with US ZEISS warranty?
Asked by: Marty
We do not understand the question. There is only one version of the ZEISS Batis 2/40 CF lens produced for sale worldwide. When this lens is purchased from an authorized ZEISS dealer, the standard warranty of 2-years from the date of purchase applies. If the lens is registered after purchase on the ZEISS website, than an additional one-year of warranty is offered.

Hi ! AF noise it's normal for this lens ? My 25 Batis and 85 Batis no sound when autofocus
Asked by: Anonymous
I’ve only owned a handful of AF lenses, but this is the quietest AF lens I’ve owned. I can’t hear any noise from mine unless I really try to, but even then it’s barely audible.
