Genaray PortaSun Overview

  • 1Description

Genaray introduces the 20" PortaSun Round Flexible Bi-Color LED Light with Softbox and Grid for image-makers who require a unique light source with form factor, color control, and power options.

The distinctive round LED array has a broad 120° beam spread for accenting or lighting large areas or groups, with the bonus of natural-looking catchlights in your subject's eyes. A lot of lights tout their product's "flexibility", referring to its features, but the PortaSun is literally flexible. You can roll it into a tube, or bend or arc it into any shape that suits your lighting requirements.

Color is variable from 2750 to 6500K to deal with ambient conditions, match other fixtures, or just for creative freedom. The PortaSun has two color modes: Auto Mode automatically adjusts the level of the daylight and tungsten LEDs as you change the color temperature. Manual Mode lets you control the strength of each set of the LEDs individually. However you use it, you'll benefit from the light's high CRI/TLCI rating of 95/96 - an indicator of high accuracy in the reproduction of color. Light intensity is also variable from 100 to 0% without flicker.

Genaray also provides a cleverly-designed X-bracket to give rigidity to the light, that enables use of light-shapers and stand mounting. The included softbox takes the edge off the bright LEDs while reducing spill and rendering a flattering quality of light. The provided grid fits on the softbox, further reduces spill, and adds directional control that facilitates selective lighting. You can always use the PortaSun on a light stand or on any clamp or grip that has a 5/8" pin. Without the X-bracket, you can bend and squeeze the PortaSun into tight spots and with the LEDs barely generating heat, you won't have the worry of hazard or discomfort. Ready for worldwide use, the PortaSun runs on the included 100 to 240 VAC power adapter, but you can also run it on optional batteries via the fixture's V-Mount. The PortaSun also comes with a Controller, Safety Cable, Collapsible Diffuser in Pouch, and a Carry Bag.

Round and Flexible
The distinctive round LED array outputs a broad 120° beam spread for lighting large areas or groups with the bonus of natural-looking catchlights in your subject's eyes. A lot of lights tout their "flexibility", referring features, but PortaSun is literally flexible. You can roll it into a tube, or bend or arc it into any shape that suits your lighting requirements.

Dimming
Besides color you also have light intensity control from 100 to 0% with consistent output and without flicker.
X-Style Mounting Bracket
The included X-bracket and its 5/8" receiver lets you mount the PortaSun on a light stand, as well as providing the rigidity you need to use the included grid and softbox.
Light Shaping
With the X-bracket giving the PortaSun the rigidity it needs, the attached softbox softens the bright output of the LEDs while reducing spill and rendering a flattering quality of light. The provided grid fits on the softbox, further reduces spill, and adds directional control that facilitates selective lighting.
Versatile Cool-Running LEDs

    Genaray PortaSun Reviews

PortaSun Round Flexible Bi-Color LED Light with Softbox and Grid (20") is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This has become my GO-TO travel light! This thing is absolutely awesome! I have always been skeptical of Flex Lights, just as an overall concept, but this light has really changed my outlook. Being able to wrap this thing up so tightly with its control box & accessories and literally throw this over my shoulder is amazing.  Beyond its portability and obvious flex capabilities, this thing is super bright & really is bright at every color temp. Bi-Color used to be a bad word in my book because it meant half as bright, and typically bad color science, but this thing is super accurate & bright! This really has become my go-to travel light, especially when doing interviews! I can set it up in 2 minutes, its soft, bright, and I can match any surrounding lighting! I cannot recommend this enough! There is not a single flaw, seriously. [I received this product in exchange for my honest review.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Interesting. Very Impressive. I have to admit that I was skeptical of this light, but after testing and using it in a few real world photo shoots, I have to admit that I really love it. As a portrait photographer, Im usually looking for a soft, diffused light source, and I like to work my lights close to the subject. Using the full configuration with the softbox and front diffuser, I was able to produce some really beautiful, soft, even light. Having the light source going edge to edge is great, as opposed to most lights that have the bulb or array in the center, with the light falling off at the edges.  The ability to adjust color temperature is great for mixing and matching in complex lighting situations. You can remove the diffuser and softbox to create a very different quality of light, depending on what youre shooting. Setup is really simple Its lightweight and a breeze to transport and use on location.  Very nice!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Light weight, powerful, simple This wont have your magenta to green shift, it wont ever allow you to get 16% power, but if you need a light thats far more powerful than a Kino Flo Diva Lite 20 (think 3-5x brighter), with more magenta rendering, that can be set up on a nano stand because its so lightweight, this could be for you.  Were very impressed with output, and the included light accessories help create some direction to what otherwise would be a full room flood light. Weve been trying to go lighter weight over the years, and this seems to fit. We need to shoot more enviroments to see how color rendering on skin tones will be, but currently its pretty good, and the CRI matches our Kino Flo Diva Lite 20s at a quarter of the cost.  The lightweight, power, CRI, ease of use, over shadows any shortcomings (no Magenta to Green shifting, only can adjust brightness in 5% increments).  Definately worth a try if youre considering, and your back and air fare for luggage will thank you. These pack down into a tube 8x 22. 2 of our Diva Lites pack into the fly case which could be mistaken for a sedan. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1266711-REG/kino_flo_kit_dl22x_120u_diva_lite_led_20_dmx.html Hoping time will prove us right and theyll be durable enough to hold up. If not, we could buy 4 for each Diva Lite, and these will probably only get better over the years.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Radioactive Pancake aka Sun Jr ;) Sometimes you come across a piece of gear that you have no idea what you would need it for, but eventually that piece of equipment becomes indispensable. That’s exactly how I feel about the PortaSun Round Flexible bicolor LED.  I had always been curious about this type of light source.  I thought it was a nifty concept, a flat, flexible light that could be placed practically anywhere, but it always seemed like one of those “if I had the extra money to spend” products.  Not a necessity but an accessory. That all changed when I got my hands on this unit. The first thing I noticed when I took it out of the box was the packaging, or more accurately the carrying case.  The light and all of the various accessories fit into a small carrying case no bigger than a duffle bag.  I appreciated the fact that since everything is self contained , I could literally just grab the case and go on a shoot with the confidence that everything I needed was all in one place.  Upon opening it, I saw that every piece was deliberately placed inside the case.  It was impressive at first, seeing how they were able to fit everything in a very small package.  This soon became a source of anxiety because I had to remember precisely how it was packaged in order to fit the kit in there securely.  But hey, who doesn’t need a refresher course on their spacial reasoning skills, am I right? Once everything was unpacked, I could see how impressively this system was designed.  The LED doesn’t feel flimsy at all, especially considering how light it is.  You would need to make a significant amount of effort in order to tear the thing.  Already it’s getting good marks in my book. Assembly really is a breeze, being very intuitive. I didn’t even open the owners manual until it was already completely ready to go (but I do highly suggest you read the manual though, because we are adults).  Once I turned the Round Flex on, I began to see it’s true potential.  The light coming off it at full power is a hair short of completely blinding (in a good way), it is surprisingly powerful and the light cast off is super clean.  I do suggest you place all of the accessories onto the unit (Softbox, diffuser and grid) before use.  It just makes it easier to wrangle this beast.  Once I had a handle on it though, this light became one of my favorite in my arsenal.  I’ve used it for interview work, portraits, and even green screen work.  It’s minimal weight, small frame and the attached hooks on it allow for so much creative control over your scene. Let me take a minute to talk about the controller unit.  Whoever designed this deserves an award.  It is super small (It was actually half the size of the V-mount battery I used to test it). It has so many design flourishes that you know this was designed by a filmmaker. I found it fascinating that you can control the color temp in two ways, either by Color Temp and brightness or Tungsten LED brightness and Daylight LED brightness.  This second option really gives you the ability to dial in the exact color temp you want.  This is just another level of complexity that shows me they are aiming for the professional content creator.  On top of this, the control unit gives audible cues when it is powered on and when it has a low battery, which is clutch when you are on a busy set. If I have any issues they are so small that actually listing them would make me seem petty, but petty I must be.  When placing on the soft box and the diffusion it does become a pain lining everything up correctly with the velcro attachments.  I’m sure I will get better over time or as the unit looses some of it’s stiffness, but I thought I would mention it.  Another problem I have is that you can only increase the power in increments of 5%, not a deal breaker at all, but just something I found lacking. All in all this is a great light, especially for us in the “one person band” situation. It’s light, durable, easily assembled and powerful.  Having this as part of your kit will certainly inspire you to think more creatively about how you light a scene. *Slow Clap, High Five* [I received this product in exchange for my honest review.]
