Sony 128GB UHS-II SDXC Overview

By B&H Photo's

The 128GB SF-G TOUGH Series UHS-II SDXC Memory Card from Sony features a storage capacity of 128GB and takes advantage of the UHS-II bus to support advanced DSLR functions such as continuous shutter bursts and rapid shooting, as well as RAW and JPEG captures. This card is also well-suited for video capture, including 8K, 4K XAVC S, 60p AVCHD, 3D, HFR, and Full HD video, and can achieve maximum read speeds of up to 300 MB/s and maximum write speeds of up to 299 MB/s. Thanks to its V90 speed class rating, minimum write speeds are guaranteed not to drop below 90 MB/s.

To help facilitate card usage in almost any environment, as well as keeping your content safe, Sony has built the TOUGH Series with a rugged design that can withstand drops up to 16.4' / 5m, immersion in up to 16.4' / 5m of water for up to 72 hours, and is bend, dust, X-ray, magnet, and anti-static proof, and resistant to UV light and temperature extremes from -13 to 185°F. The TOUGH Series is also up to 18 times stronger than standard SD media (180N compared to 10N) and features a one-piece molded construction that is ribless with no write protect switch, helping to further guard against physical damage that can affect SD cards, such as a broken plastic casing, a broken data protection lock, and broken connector ribs. Should the card's data become compromised, you also benefit from the option to download File Rescue software for free to help recover deleted content.

UHS-II media achieves its speed through an extra row of pins and while this card has been designed for cameras that are UHS-II / V90 compatible, it may be used in devices that do not support UHS-II / V90. However, bear in mind that this card will then default to your device's speed class and bus rating, such as UHS-II and V60, which supports minimum write speeds of 60 MB/s, UHS-II and V30, which supports minimum write speeds of 30 MB/s, or UHS-I and U3, which also supports minimum write speeds of 30 MB/s. If your device does not support U3, this card is compatible with the U1 and Class 10 standards, each of which guarantees minimum write speeds of 10 MB/s.

General Features
TOUGH Specification Cards
SF-G series TOUGH specification cards are designed for dependability. The one-piece molding body with high hardness materials is 18 times more bend resistant than the SD standard, impact resistant for drops up to 16', and the highest dustproof and waterproof level (IP68).
Fragile Parts Designed Out
By designing out the weak parts of conventional SD cards - the ribs and write-protect switch -reliability is vastly improved. This reduces risk of difficulty in recording data if broken.
Superior Water and Dustproofing
The fully-sealed one-piece molding meets the highest specifications for both waterproofing and dustproofing. With an IP68 rating, the SF-G series TOUGH specification cards can withstand fine dust, mud, grime and immersion in 16' of water for up to 72 hours.
Ultra-Fast Write Speeds
Take burst-shooting and high-resolution video recording to the next level with ultra-fast write speeds up to 299 MB/s, which is fast enough for even the highest performance camera with a UHS-II interface.
V90 for Capturing High-Resolution Video
Support for the latest V90 video speed class makes this card perfect for high-resolution video recording. V90 is the highest grade of video speed class which guarantees a minimum write speed of 90 MB/s, so you can feel confident that there won't be any dropped frames or caching, even when capturing up to 8K video.
Faster Transfer to PC
With read speeds of up to 300 MB/s, you can transfer large files such as 4K video or a bunch of high-resolution images to a PC in seconds. Less time waiting, more time doing.
SD Scan Utility
It would be a disaster if your camera suddenly stopped storing images. Over time, all SD memory wears out and the card stops recording data reliably. Sony's SD Scan Utility regularly and automatically scans your SD memory card and lets you know when it's about time to replace it with a fresh card. Disaster avoided. Available for Windows and Mac.
Reliable In All Conditions
In addition to top-rating dust and water proofing, TOUGH specification cards are resistant to X-rays (ISO7816-1), magnetic fields, UV, and temperature extremes, all while retaining broad compatibility with cameras and other SD card readers.
File Rescue
File Rescue is a powerful and easy-to-use tool that recovers data5. Available as a free download for Sony memory card customers.
Backward Compatible with UHS-I
While its highest performance is obtained using a UHS-II compatible camera, users can also use these cards in UHS-I compatible equipment, with read speeds of up to 95 MB/s and write speeds of up to 90 MB/s.

great card-- if you sand it down to size

In my experience, other SD cards tend to split and otherwise disintegrate into cameras, potentially ruining them. I was excited about the Sony SF-G Tough card's features-- unibody, strong and fast. However, reviews here and elsewhere say that the SF-G is larger than other cards and tends to get stuck in cameras. This is correct: it is bigger than, say, a Lexar SD card, and would clearly get stuck in my Lumix BS1H camera (among others). I used sand paper and a digital caliper to evenly reduce the card's size to match the Lexar's: it now works perfectly. Here are the Lexar card's measurements: 31.96mm x 23.95mm x 2.05mm. Here are the SF-G's: 32.03mm x 24.04mm x 2.16mm. I photographed the serial number before I sanded it away. Dear Sony: please make your card's the same size as the Lexar's so that they don't ruin our cameras.

I love these memory cards. Their build quality, their speeds, they've simply never let me down. I picked up a few extra ahead of busy season as you can never have too many.

This is the second time I've purchased Sony Tough cards. I have been using 128 GB SD and CFE cards for the past 3 years in my EOS R5 without any issues. I thought I would purchase two 64 GB cards to into my backup camera, an EOS R6 mk ii. So far they have been working flawlessly.

Wow fast!

can uhs-I SD card reader read these uhs=II cards?
Asked by: Terry
Most UHS-I readers can read UHS-II cards however it would be at UHS-I's slower speed. If you need full speed, please use a UHS-II reader. Here is an example. Kingston MobileLite G4 Multi-Function SD / microSD Card Reader B&H # KIFCRMLG4.

what is the difference SF-G Tough SF-M Tough ?
Asked by: Michel
The SF-G has a UHS-II interface (with additional signal pins) whereas the SF-M is UHS-I. If you have a camera that has a UHS-II interface, these cards can be 2-3 times as fast as UHS-I. If your camera does not have a UHS-II interface, the card was still work but won't be any faster than a UHS-1 card. I have a 128gb SF-G card that I use in my A7r3. It works very well and it's extremely fast both for raw photo storage and also high-speed 4K video.

The latest WD My Passport Wireless SSDs do have an SD card slot. However it is limited to 65 MB/s read speeds. You will be able to use this card with the drive, but will not experience its full read speed.

what is the difference between sf-g and sf-m cards?
Asked by: Bobby C
When compared to the Sony TOUGH-M Series UHS-II SD Card, the Sony TOUGH-G Series UHS-II SD Card has a slightly faster maximum reading speed in HD312 mode. The TOUGH-G is also nearly twice as fast at maximum writing speed in HD312 mode. If you are using these cards with the SDR104 mode, then both have identical read and write speeds. Furthermore, the G series has been rated at V90 while the M series has a rating of V60. This means that the G cards are more suitable for up to 8K for filming while the M cards are more suitable for up to 4K capture.
