A sleek form factor along with capable imaging and a long-reaching zoom, the Cyber-shot DSC-HX99 from Sony is a compact camera well-suited for travel and everyday shooting. Revolving around a back-illuminated 18.2MP Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor, the HX99 is capable of producing notably smooth and clear imagery with low noise levels, along with an expandable sensitivity range up to ISO 12800. Spanning wide-angle to super telephoto perspectives, this lens benefits from Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld imagery. Designed to be a versatile, all-in-one pocketable camera, the HX99 mixes both capability and intuitiveness to appeal to a wide range of shooting needs.

18.2MP Exmor R CMOS Sensor and BIONZ X Image Processor

Utilizing an 18.2MP 1/2.3" Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor, the HX99 is able to produce high-resolution stills and UHD 4K video with notable clarity and smooth tonality. The sensor employs a back-illuminated design, which allows it to achieve reduced noise levels along with a native sensitivity range to ISO 3200 that can be extended to ISO 12800 for working in low-light conditions. The sensor and processor also provide a continuous shooting rate of 10 fps for up to 10 consecutive frames in a burst.

Additionally, the HX99 is the first HX-series camera capable of recording UHD 4K video, at either 30p or 24p frame rates, as well as Full HD video. 4K video uses full sensor pixel readout to record approximately 1.6x times the required information, and this oversampling process helps to deliver greater clarity along with reduced moiré and other artifacts.

ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 30x Zoom Lens

Covering wide-angle to super telephoto perspectives, the built-in 30x ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* lens spans a 24-720mm equivalent focal length range. Five aspherical elements are incorporated in the optical design, which reduce spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range, and a T* anti-reflective coating helps to control lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color neutrality.

Complementing the optical design, Optical SteadyShot image stabilization is also used to minimize the appearance of camera shake. An Intelligent Active Mode is also available to reduce blur common to shooting video while moving. Also aiding in achieving sharp imagery, Fast Intelligent AF employs an optimized spatial object detection algorithm to quicken focusing speeds, and Eye AF can be used to automatically detect and focus on the eyes of the main subject.

Body Design and Wireless Connectivity

  • Helping to maintain a sleek form factor, the 638.4k-dot OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder employs a unique pop-up design to retain a pocketable overall size when not in use.
  • Rear 3.0" 921k-dot LCD monitor employs a 180° tilting design to facilitate working from low angles or taking front-facing selfies, and this screen is also a touchscreen for intuitive menu navigation as well as the ability to work with Touch Focus, Touch Pad AF, and Touch Shutter functions.
  • A control ring surrounds the lens for directly and intuitively adjusting shooting settings, such as shutter speed and aperture, among others.
  • Built-in pop-up flash provides additional illumination when working in low-light conditions.
  • The large right-hand grip offers increased comfort and support for longer shooting sessions.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC lets you wirelessly share imagery to a smartphone or tablet for instant sharing online. This connectivity also lets you remotely control the camera from a mobile device. Additionally, Bluetooth connectivity also lets you embed your mobile device's location data to your images for geotagging.
  • Included NP-BX1 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 370 shots per charge when working with the rear monitor, or 300 shots per charge when shooting with the electronic viewfinder.

Sony DSC-HX99 Reviews

Great little camera

I have used basic shooting thus far and really happy with what the camera point and shot setting can do, and am looking forward to what the you set it can do. It does fantastic video. I would recommend this little camera as a carry backup, or just on its own.

Great camera but useless picture transfers.

Well, I love the camera, but cannot get it to connect to wifi, nfc or bluetooth. It seems that Sony makes stuff very obtuse sometimes. I tried connected with 2 different smartphones... No luck I then loaded the Playmemories on my home PC and work PC. This camera cannot connect to anything. It would be nice if it would act like a disk/thumbdrive so that when I plugged the camera into the PC, it would show the image files... NOPE. SOny makes it difficult, so I have to pull the card out every time to D/L the images. Not happy!

The Sony HX99 takes excellent pictures on automatic but to get the most out of your images you need to master the three manual modes. This is not a beginners point and shoot but is aimed for the skilled photographer.

I had written off the point and shoot cameras. I figured my phone would be good enough. I WAS WRONG. After the phone camera letting me down time and time again, I decided to try the camera thing out again. Soooo glad I did. Great shots, I never missed one of them. This thing powers on and is ready fast. No more blurred or way too grainy shots. Zoom is super impressive. I'd love to attach a shot of the moon ii took with this camera but don't see a way to do it in app.

Camera is great, but

If you envision using your smart-phone to connect with the camera, I would say good luck! After try and failing to connect and then spending hours talking to Sony tech support, they told me the app is the problem. I tried connecting using 3 different smart phones to no avail...

Great features, not impressed by image quality

This camera is a replacement for my Canon Powershot SX710 HS that reached the end of its life. I have been using the camera for about two weeks now. I wanted a pocket-sized camera with a powerful zoom. I would have liked to purchase a camera with a larger sensor, but those cameras are either too large for my bike jersey pocket or too expensive for the abuse that this camera will need to endure on outdoor adventures. I previously owned a Sony Cybershot and liked it until it was dropped on the pavement. So I decided to give this camera a try. I like: Size, Raw capability, internal panorama mode, night modes, manual settings, charging from 5V micro USB. The viewfinder was a nice surprise, especially when zoomed in on fast moving objects. Tilt screen for selfie mode is handy. I don't like: Seems a bit delicate for my purposes. Big Zeiss lens has strong color fringing when zoomed in. I expected better from the brand. Sensor is noisier than my old Canon, so cropping the photos is not really an option. I will play more with shooting Raw. Dynamic range is not very good in jpg. Again, I need to do more experimenting and comparison with Raw. Many modes and features do not work when the file type is set to Raw. Image stabilization is not very strong. I have nothing to add about movie modes since I haven't tried them. The features for movies sound promising.

I just got the camera and I am very disappointed in the documentation. I have not been able to implement control of the camera from my smartphone. I have about 50 years experience using and programming computers and about 40 years experience using sophisticated cameras.

I was using the Sony Cyber-shot Wx350 until I lost it, and I decided to upgrade with this HX99. So far I am very pleased with it. The one thing that attracted me to it was the RAW and Jpeg feature, but I have yet to get my Raw upgraded to work with my Photoshop 11. Also, love the 30x's zoom lens as I shoot a lot of landscape and wildlife photos. Still finding my way around with everything it does, but am pleased with the camera accessories and pictures it puts out.
