Magnus TR-13 Tripod with Ball Head Overview

The Magnus TR-13 Travel Tripod with Dual-Action Ball Head includes an Arca-type-compatible quick release plate, and the head has a separate locking knob for the ball, and one for the 360° pan. The cut notch on the side of the ball head allows you to place a camera at a 90° angle, and the head can support point-and-shoot, mirrorless, and DSLR cameras weighing up to 13.2 lb.

The four-section aluminum legs have flip locks that open so you can extend them along with the rapid center column to a maximum height of 62.5". To get to the minimum height of 16.5", the legs splay completely out, and they have three variable angles with independent leg spread to adjust when shooting on uneven terrain. The tripod's center column is reversible to get closer to the ground. The legs fold in the reverse to a compact 18.2" to be compact for travel, and rubber feet prevent the tripod from sliding on smooth surfaces.

Magnus TR-13 Tripod with Ball Head Reviews

For the price, it is a great deal.

On first blush, the tripod has all the features I require of a tripod. It is well made, stable and comes in a nice bag with the ball head enclosed in a felt bag. The panning feature on the unit is a bit tight and the Arca Swiss mount needs to be open a bit more than I have encountered on similar type products. Also, the plate is made of plastic, and the D ring is cheaply made. If these things do not concern you, this tripod is well worth the price.

excellent for portability for small cameras

I use it a lot for my small camera -- by which I mean, Nikon P340 point and shoot. It's great. But recently I bought a P950 -- three times the weight, 35 oz altogether -- for the purpose of getting better photos of birds, in particular a nest 25 feet from my balcony, and the magnus really struggles to hold the camera in position. someone else made a similar comment about sagging -- well, for a larger rig, that's true. it would probably be fine with a DX SLR or mirrorless, but I can't use it with the P950. So I got down from the attic an ancient Bausch & Lomb professional tripod my father bought for me probably 50 years ago, to use with a telescope. This thing is much heavier but steady as a rock. I will probably look for something in between for travel, i.e. anywhere outside my balcony where the camera is perched right now on the bird's nest 25 feet away, taking videos of parent birds feeding the nestlings. I can leave it there, come back, turn it on, the focus will not have changed. That would not be true with this lightweight Magnus and the P950. But for all the sunrises I shoot with the little camera, it's fine. thus, 4 stars total. and B&H is where I go for photography stuff for 30 years.

Sturdy Tripod

I really like just about everything with this tripod. It is very sturdy while being easy to transport. The only thing I wish it had was a way to tilt up and down, like a traditional tripod.

Looks good for light use

I have not had much time to use the tripod, which I bought to hold lightweight sound recording equipment. I think it will serve my purpose nicely. The leg clamps are not adjustable and I have some concern that over time they could start to slip. It is a bit of a trick to get it into the bag, requiring that the center column be fully raised and the legs fully extended upward, and perhaps some fiddling with the ballhead to make it fit, as others have mentioned, but that is a minor gripe. Still, happy with it given the price.

Steal at the price

Bought this out of desperation. The construction is sturdy and after a few uses I haven't found much to complain about. The ball head takes more tightening than I initially assumed to prevent sagging but it still locks and holds. The spirit level is only on the head and not the body so if you're shooting portrait that gauge becomes useless. My main complaint is its fold up size. The head gets in the way of the legs folding properly and can unlock sections when transported. I suppose one could take it off and put it on again when ready to use, but that diminishes mobility.

Good choice

Had a little trouble getting the center column to move and the head moves a little bit but overall a good choice

It's a good sturdy tripod that stays balanced. Given it's a little heavy so I don't recommend it for long hikes but if you're just taking out of the car and walking a short distance it'll serve your purpose. Folds up to about a foot long so it's easy to store.

I would like to adjust the pan scale to have either 0 or 180 aligned with the front leg of the tripod, but I have not been able to lock it in place in that position. Has anybody figured out a way to do this?
Asked by: Eric
Thanks for both answers. I had also pretty much come to the conclusion that while you can rotate the scale, you can't really lock it precisely in a specific position. Oh well, it's still useful as a reference, and at the price it's hard to complain. Great little tripod!

Is this tripod quick release plate compatible with a Cambio Field Camera? Not sure if different models require different heads?
Asked by: hailey
Yes, the ball head on the TR-13 comes with a Quick Release Plate with a standard ¼-20” thread. The Field camera may have a 3/8-16” female thread, in this case a reducer busing can be used.

Yes. The only time I had problems with giggle was when it was fairly windy. I think it was 30+mph. I bought it for a trip to Scotland, it preformed well (except for the wind). Now it's in my car, just in case. :)

Yes, the 80D will fit fine on the Magnus TR-13 Travel Tripod with Dual-Action Ball Head. The head on the tripod comes with a quick release plate so you do not need any other part.
