XF400 4K UHD 60P Camcorder with Dual Pixel Autofocus is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a gem! The one I have been waiting for. I had been shooting with the XA30 for the last couple of years and wondered if Canon would ever produce a similar configuration with 4K. The wait is over. The switches and buttons are situated nicely and the touch screen menu is a big plus. Of course it goes without saying that the image quality is stunning. Even when burned to a BluRay disc and played back thru a standard hd television the increased quality is very apparent. If you are interested in shooting scenery and wildlife get the WA-U50 and TL-U50 conversion lenses. They are perfectly suited for the XF400 and there is no loss of quality in 4K. I would also recommend getting a good quality external mike with the 3.5mm or XLR plugs. Give this one a serious look.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for varying lighting conditions This XF-400 joins my Canon inventory along side an XA-20. I have shot hundreds of hours of video clips with my XA-20. I really appreciate the ability of the XA-20 to deal with difficult and changing lighting conditions during long clips. Having 4K capability was pulling at me and I wanted a full frame camera so I acquired a Canon EOS 5D MKIV. Besides taking high resolution and quality stills the 5D can practically see in the dark. The 5D also records great video with one nearly fatal flaw for me. The clip length in the 5D is limited to 29 minutes and 59 seconds! For the life of me, I can’t figure out why all still cameras have this time limitation. This limitation disqualifies them for use in recording performance programs. So then I saw the release of the Canon XF-400. The XF-400 takes the ability of the XA-20 to another level. Last night I recorded a Christmas Eve candle light service where the lighting started out bright and backlit and then dimmed to candle light. The XF-400 automatically adjusted for the changing light conditions and recorded footage that allows the viewer to immerse themselves back into the original program. I also find the audio mixer is easier to manage. I don’t have to go back and forth into the menus settings as much. I can set the audio floor to a low level so that there is hardly any background hiss and still get good dynamic range in the audio recording. I am looking forward to many great hours of video recording where the XA-20 gets relegated to shooting the second angle. Next, is upgrading my MacBook Pro, maybe to an iMac Pro. The large 4K data streams brings the MacBook Pro to its knees.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Many features in a small package The XF400 has many features to like: small size, lightweight, excellent hand-held stabilization, flexible and professional audio configurations, and good recording time. So far, I am glad I got it and am enjoying its value. Recommended! But here are downsides: 1) only one lens ring and it is selectable between either focus or zoom. 2) Exposure compensation has to be assigned to a programmable button, but it isn't the same as "exposure lock". Exposure lock is possible, but since the lens is variable between 2.8 and 4.5 as it zooms, exposure lock is somewhat difficult to control. An exposure ring would have been a nice addition to the focus ring. Canon still does not offer 10 bit recording; only 8 bit and it is further restricted to 4-2-0, unless you use an external recorder to get 4-2-2. Shutter speed is sometimes difficult to determine, unless you are in the TV mode or manual mode instead of P mode or automatic. In general, it seems to prefer 1/30, which I like for more sensitivity. Finally, as with any modern camera, the menus take some time to find things, but Canon has done a good job overall with logical layout. The big pluses for me were the stabilization, 1" sensor, good sensitivity with less noise and the fantastic zoom ratio! My plan is to use the 4K camera mostly for 1080p work. As such, the lens permits extending the optical zoom to a digital zoom as well. The magnification is excellent, before noise starts to become a factor. Much much better than I expected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I was waiting for this camcorder from Canon I was so happy to see that Canon built this new camcorder. I pre ordered from B and H and by and large I'm happy with it. Since I have only been using it for 2 weeks this review should be read with that in mind. Pros: - Image quality is excellent. - You have 15X's zoom plus and extra 15X's with the 4K built in. This feature works very well. I'm impressed. - There is a built in 300X's digital zoom that is pretty impressive. Although not as perfect as the optical zoom, I have zoomed in on things close to a mile a way and I couldn't believe how good it looked. - Size of camcorder is so great for all you get. - The menu is set up to make it easier to get around then the old Canon system. Cons: - The touch screen has frozen a few times when I am using the camera. I am trying to get in touch with Canon to tell them. My thought is there will be a firmware update to fix this. - The read speed for 4K is fast. At one point the camcorder said my SD card was not fast enough to keep up. My SD card is a professional grade and pretty fast but I think I'll need the next step up if I plan on shooting a lot in 4K. (It has shot fine in 4K most of the time even with that card) I still have to work with this camcorder to really give it a grade but I am happy with it so far.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Outstanding 1080p Image Lets start off that I use this almost 100% as a 1080 60p camera. Both the standard Rec709 and Wide-DR images are beautiful. There are some minor adjustments you can make, but out of camera they are wonderful. Yes, other cameras have more options to tweak the image, but you can make a pretty flat low contrast image if you want. The 30xzoom feature is very high quality, the focusing is very good. As one reviewer stated having problem with hunting, there is a mode called AF-Boosted Manual focus which stops the camera from hunting . The 120fps feature is good, but not great. Overall, I have just been able to set, and use the camera and get great shots. If you want to see just how good the 1080p images is, take a look at the European Broadcast Union (EBU) Tech 3335 test results tech.ebu.ch/camera_reports_tech3335 PS - I tried the Sony NX-80 and is it a also a VERY good camera. The main reason I went with the Canon is that in 1080p mode, the Sony has noticeable Morie' and Aliasing while the Canon has almost none.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small learning curve Before buying, I read the instruction manual, talked to a one-man-band ENG guy used this cam, and watched the Jem Schofield video series from Canon. I knew what to expect and so this camera was easy. If you follow that, it's very easy to use and enjoy this camera. It takes excellent video in low light, indoor, fluorescent, etc. The automatic settings are adjustable, such as how fast to autofocus, how quick the camera responds to new objects, how big or small the focus area should be, etc. Not everything is possible in 4k, so if you keep in mind sometimes you will need to shoot MXF in 1080P at 45 mbps, the camera the job done. Personally, I prefer to shoot in HD because the file size and complication of 4k is not worth it for my current projects. When I want a quick workflow (no grading), I love the 4:2:0 8-bit 1920X1080 35 mbps because it meets minimum broadcast standards. However, I can apply minimal grading with the 4:2:0 MXF 45 mbps 1920X1080 codec in this camera and skin tones look smooth, warm, just really nice. The apps and wireless remote work great, BH shipped it a day ahead of schedule and I couldn't be happier.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Caution If you are a professional videographer looking for a camera, this is not for you! All of your settings (including your iris and shutter settings) are in the touch screen menu and not built in on the physical camera making it incredibly difficult to use for run and gun work or b-roll outdoors.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not an XF300 Replacement I purchased this and returned it after about 3 weeks. I had hoped this was a true replacement to the xf300, but it is not. It is much smaller and the lens is not an “L” lens as you have with the xf300. I have used Canon products extensively and have never been disappointed until now. So if you are looking to upgrade your xf300, this is not the choice.
