Sony FDR-AX33 overview

  • 1Description

This B&H 4K Vlogging Kit consists of the Sony FDR-AX33 Handycam Camcorder, ECM-GZ1M Zoom Microphone with Multi-Interface Shoe, and GP-VPT1 Shooting Grip with Mini Tripod. It has been assembled to provide you with a low-profile 4K/HD shooting package. The camera shoots and records in UHD 4K at 24 or 30 fps, and HD at up to 60 fps to SDXC media cards (not included). The Exmor R CMOS sensor is designed for improved low-light performance, and the BIONZ processor handles the high data rate of the 4K footage and supports 20x Clear Image Zoom to enhance the camera's 10x optical zoom. The camera also features Sony's Multi-Interface Shoe.

The included zoom microphone attaches to, and powers from, the camera's Multi-Interface Shoe. The microphone can be used as a zoom microphone which adjusts its pickup pattern in relation to the zoom length of your lens, or it can be used as a fixed pickup pattern microphone. The Shooting Grip with Mini Tripod incorporates a wired remote control for your Handycam and can be used as a grip with the legs folded in, or as a mini tripod support with the legs unfolded.

  • Sony FDR-AX33 4K Ultra HD Handycam Camcorder

The Sony FDR-AX33 is a palm-sized Handycam camcorder that combines 4K video recording and Balanced Optical SteadyShot image stabilization to deliver clear, high-resolution video, even as you follow the action. It is equipped with a wide-angle Zeiss Vario Sonnar T* lens with 10x optical zoom and up to 20x Clear Image zoom and features an Exmor R CMOS sensor with Bionz X image processor that delivers Ultra HD (3840x2160) resolution video at 24 or 30 fps using Sony's XAVC S codec. It also records 1080p video up to 60 fps in XAVC S or AVCHD and takes up to 20.6MP upscaled (interpolated) still images.

Video and photos are recorded to Memory Stick Duo or SD memory cards. You can monitor and playback footage on the camcorder's 3.0" Xtra Fine LCD touchscreen display with 921K dot resolution, or the high-resolution 0.24" 1,555K dot OLED EVF. An HDMI output port is also provided for connecting to your HDTV to large-screen playback. For enhanced connectivity and remote control, the FDR-AX33 is Wi-Fi and NFC enabled. This lets you use your smartphone or tablet to control the camcorder, as well as wirelessly transfer files to your mobile device and even stream live to Ustream.

Designed for a wide range of users, the camcorder features a range of automatic image and audio options for easy point-and-shoot operation, as well as enhanced manual controls that give you more creative freedom. An assignable ring in the front of the camcorder can be assigned to control of zoom, focus, exposure, iris, shutter speed, exposure, or white balance. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack is included for powering the camcorder, which can be re-charged using the camcorder's built-in USB charging cable. Also included with the camcorder is an AC adapter, USB connection support cable, and an HDMI cable.

    Capture 4K Ultra HD Video
Capture the finest details in 4K Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 resolution. This camcorder allows incredibly high resolution, to produce vibrant and realistic images. In addition, the fast Bionz X image processor is the same one employed in professional Sony camcorder models, making it possible to record 60p movies at Full HD resolution for incredibly smooth and sharp playback, with no loss in realism, even when panning the camera and shooting moving subjects.

Note: UHS-I U3 or higher SDXC memory card required for 100Mbps 4K recording, and Class 10 or higher SDXC required for 60Mbps 4K recording.
    Direct Pixel Read Out
The FDR-AX33 incorporates 'direct pixel readout' utilizing the entire width of the image sensor without line skipping or pixel binning. Therefore in both HD and 4K video acquisition it can read and process data from every one of the sensor's pixels, resulting in smooth edges and color gradation giving you the incredible video from a tiny camera.
Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar T* Lens with 10x Optical Zoom
The FDR-AX33 comes equipped with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens. It features a wide 35mm-equivalent focal length of 29.8mm (in movie mode) to fit more into your shots, well as 10x optical zoom and 20x Clear Image zoom for getting closer to the action.
    Balanced Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization
On standard Optical SteadyShot camcorders a single "shift lens" is moved in the optical block to offset camera shake. Balanced Optical SteadyShot with Active Mode moves the entire optical block at once, maintaining the integrity of the optical path and reducing shake. It also reduces vignetting (light fall off towards the edge of a scene) and lowers distortion in videos and still photos.
XAVC S, AVCHD, and MP4 Codecs
The FDR-AX33 records 4K and HD movies in the XAVC S format, which uses MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 for video compression and linear PCM for audio compression, while saving files in a MP4 wrapper which allows for extensive record times and easy editing. Additionally, you can chose to record HD in AVCHD (ideal for HDTV and Blu-ray disc burning) or MP4 (ideal for sharing over the internet). This gives you the ability to switch between all three formats or choosing dual record to capture both XAVC S and MP4 simultaneously.
    0.24" OLED EVF
The high contrast 0.24" OLED Tru-Finder EVF features a 1,555K-dot resolution and reproduces rich color and deep blacks. The optical design uses four dual-surface spherical lenses, which provides a wide 33-degree viewing angle for clear images from center to the edge of the viewfinder.
3.0" Xtra Fine LCD Touchscreen Display
The 3.0" Clear Photo LCD features 921K dot resolution for sharp, bright, vivid images, enabling you to change settings to best represent the scene. Easily scroll through menus and view footage thanks to WhiteMagic technology that dramatically increases visibility in bright daylight.
5.1 Channel Mic with Audio Record Controls
Dolby Digital 5.1 channel recording captures active sounds coming from all directions, so you can experience your home movies the way you experienced them while recording. Advanced sound features such as Auto Gain Control Limit and Auto Wind Noise Reduction make it even easier to get high-quality sound in various situations. The camcorder records high quality linear PCM (XAVC S) and AAC-LC 2ch (MP4).
Simple Connectivity to Smartphones via Wi-Fi/NFC
Built-in Wi-Fi/NFC support enables easy connectivity with smartphones for one-touch sharing and one-touch remote control. NFC (near field communication) provides "touch connection" convenience when transferring images to Android smartphones and tablets. You simply touch your NFC-compatible device to the camcorder to establish a connection.
    Live Streaming
Share the adventure as it happens via Ustream live streaming. Now your circle of friends and family can share the excitement in real time by simply logging in to UStream from anywhere. You can also link your favorite social accounts with the streaming to notify your friends when you start streaming video.
    Multi-Camera Control
Add a different point of view by including other camera angles to your movies. Connect to up to five compatible Sony cameras via Wi-Fi and use the camcorder's LCD to preview what the other cameras are seeing and simultaneously start recording on all synced cameras. After recording, you can use the PlayMemories Home software (available as a free download on Sony's website) to easily edit and create multi-view movies.
    Highlight Movie Maker
Highlight Movie Maker produces a short highlight movie clip to share and enjoy instantly. Using an advanced algorithm based on the motion gyro, Highlight Movie Maker automatically selects the best scenes from your videos and creates a MP4 highlight reel of your recorded action.

Note: Highlight Move Maker is not available when shooting in 4K.
    Intelligent AUTO Mode
Intelligent AUTO mode goes a step beyond traditional auto modes by analyzing your shot and then automatically selecting the appropriate settings from ten distinct scene modes and wind noise reduction. There are 60 different combinations possible: Portrait, Baby, Tripod, Backlight, Landscape, Spotlight, Twilight, Macro, and Low light.
    Multi Interface Accessory Shoe
Expand photographic and movie shooting possibilities by attaching optional accessories via the Multi Interface Shoe. Attach an electronic viewfinder, external flash, stereo microphone, or even a compatible remote control via the Multi Terminal.
    Trimming Playback
Connect to your 1080p HDTV via the camcorder's HDMI output and select a specific portion of the 4K picture for playback; you can move the section using the camcorder's menu toggle, and scale it using the zoom lever.
    Manual Control Ring
The manual control ring around the lens opening can be assigned to control zoom, focus, exposure, iris, shutter speed, exposure, or white balance.

  • Sony ECM-GZ1M Zoom Microphone for Cameras with Multi-Interface Shoe

The Sony ECM-GZ1M Zoom Microphone is a monaural on-camera microphone that features a hot shoe interface specifically for Sony cameras and camcorders that have the propriety Multi-Interface Shoe. The microphone is designed to help isolate the sound you want originating from the subject while rejecting unwanted ambient noise. It offers two setting to choose from: a "Gun" Mode which locks the microphone in a fixed pick-up pattern, and a "Zoom" Mode which dynamically adjusts the pick-up pattern in relation how much you zoom in, making the microphone pick-up angle narrower as you zoom closer - Zoom Mode requires a camera or camcorder with a zoom lens.

Monaural, electret condenser microphone that powers directly from the camera or camcorder's hot shoe
Removable windscreen helps reduce wind noise for shooting outdoors
    Compatibility
For all Sony camcorder models that feature the Multi-Interface Shoe. Note: This is not compatible with earlier camcorders that use Active Interface Shoe (AIS)

  • Sony GP-VPT1 Shooting Grip with Mini Tripod

The Sony GP-VPT1 Shooting Grip with Mini Tripod provides one-handed operation of your multi-terminal equipped Sony camcorder or camera. It can also fold out into a mini tripod for hands-free use. The GP-VPT1 features a pan handle with wired remote control, adjustable grip angle, and zoom, photo, and start/stop record buttons. A hand strap, cable clamper, and carrying pouch come included.

Your camera mounts to the shooting grip via a 1/4"-20 screw. The wired AV cable uses Sony's Multi Terminal connector, which plugs in to the corresponding port on compatible camcorders/cameras and lets you control zoom, take photos, and start/stop recording using the buttons found on the grip. Using the cable clamper keeps the cable out of the way while recording. The grip angle is adjustable in increments of approximately 10 degrees by pressing the angle adjust button on the side of the grip. This allows you to find the angle that is comfortable for you.

For added convenience, two legs fold out from the shooting grip to turn the GP-VPT1 into a mini tripod, letting you set it on a tabletop for hands-free shooting.

    Sony FDR-AX33 reviews

FDR-AX33 4K Ultra HD Handycam Camcorder is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 49.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent camera! Highly recommended. 4K is awesome! The 4K quality is awesome! I record at 4K 100mbit and it works great. The only bad thing is the battery, which may not be enough for recording full events at the 4K quality. This camera senses the scene and displays icons like low light, spotlight, night scene, walking, tripod mounted, and more, so you'll get the best quality possible from whatever you're shooting. Be aware you'll need a large SD card. I recorded just an hour and the file was almost 42GB, this using the 4K 100Mbit setting. Low light is good. I recorded a school talent show at a theater and the recorded quality was crystal clear. I highly recommend this camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent video, limited optical zoom. First I was considering buying a Panasonic HC-VX870 4K Ultra HD Camcorder but it has no viewfinder, which is a dealbreaker for me. I had the Sony FDR-AX33 4K Ultra HD for about a month. This is my experience so far: The video resolution is the best I have seen. Pro: The camcorder is fairly small. Excellent video quality, 20 MP photos. User friendly (the controls are well positioned and not too many , easy switch to manual mode). Image stabilization seems good. Software is easy to navigate. Con: Only 10x optical zoom. Intelligent: 15x 4K Intelligent: 20x (in HD). In video mode the still pix are 10MP. In photo mode the maximum zoom is 10x. No internal flash.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sony AX33 only 10x optical zoom Did a comparisons vs the Panasonic VX870 4k camcorder vs this sony The Panasonic has a Leica lens system which offers a 20x optical zoom i've had video cameras for years and there's been countless situations where I needed that extra reach zoom and that's where I feel the Panasonic is superior at its 20x optical Zoom offering examples are birds and wildlife and simply places you can't get close to your subject The other thing with the Panasonic is the 20 x optical zoom is just a sharp at its full 20x zoom as Non-zoom applied now don't get me wrong the Sony 4K camcorder is amazing and has very good Built quality I also saved a $

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Mostly good but not real remote control First, I use this camera for aerial filming where the Balanced Image Stabilization is awesome. The video quality is exceptional. I am used to a Canon CX 760 which has several choices for remote control, but the AX33 does not. The serious drawback of this camera is that it has a wifi remote control program which would be great, except using the remote only lets you control zoom and record BUT NOT FOCUS, and putting it in wifi mode turns off all user settings! If had known this I would have not bought it. It is an expensive camera to have such poor remote capability.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent It has way more useful features than my older Sony camcorder (HDR-XR160). It's slightly larger and heavier than the old one, but it's not a bad thing. Actually I like that. The focus on the older model is better, however the AX33 takes way better and sharper photos. Actually the photos look more artistic. Fast recording, night vision recording, all really nice features. The footage in dark look way nicer than my old camera's footage. The battery is the same as the older model has. That's a big plus. Same about the cables. I'd say it's the best for using at home or making documentaries, great with a tripod. If you travel a lot, chose a smaller/lighter model.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best handheld camera SONY has EVER made! I shot some test footage with the new SONY AX33. No processing, hand-held, right out of the box. In short; I am absolutely stunned by the quality and performance of this camera! I have been using SONY cameras since BETACAM (BVW 1a/3A) I have purchased HI8, DVCAM, Z100, EX1, FS100, CX550V, CX760V, and the AX1. (BTW: The AX1 is the WORST camera SONY has EVER made.) The AX33 ($) far outperforms the AX1 ($) in every way possible (I just did a side by side comparison using charts and real scenes. If you have owned the 760V; the AX33 is a slightly larger version of that camera in 4K. It records 4K at 100Mbps with SDXC cards, although the SDXC cards are unbelievably expensive. The exposure latitude, color accuracy, Balanced Steady Shot (BOSS), recording algorithm, and functionality are of the highest standards (If only the AX1 had the same sensor.) The test footage includes some audio recorded with a RODE microphone.I would recommend this to your friends and their friends!Test footage shot with this camera (4K): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7-N0C-hxvI&feature=youtu.be

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Looks better than it is... Just because this is a 4k camera, don't expect super high quality. The best things I can say about the AX33 is it is small, compact, very easy to use, incredible audio and the BOSS image stabilizer is the best thing anywhere. However I was unable to pull a critical focus regardless whether I was indoors with studio lighting or outdoors in direct sunlight. In fact my Sony CX900 HD camcorder produced better results than the 4k footage I shot. I returned the AX33 in favor of JVC's GY-HN 170UA which gives me 150% of what I need.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Could be improved Overall, fairly positive. Multi-selection ring for focus, zoom, aperture, shutter speed, etc. is a definite improvement over the tiny knobs that Sony's traditionally favored. The wireless livestreaming function is definite plus...looking forward to checking it out. The negatives? Manual audio levels only work with the ECM-XYST1M microphone connected to the multi-interface shoe while it's plugged into the mic jack. Manual audio levels are vital for live concert recording. It's a power hog, even if shooting in AVCHD mode. Best order a couple of NP-FV100 batteries; if you're shooting in 4K mode, it'll suck 'em dry in a little of six hours. The biggest drawback, resulting in a less than stellar rating of three stars? It doesn't include an IR remote, nor is it even equipped with an IR receiver. The wireless function is nice but it's no substitute for a dedicated remote. And you'd best include a couple of 128 gigabyte SD cards. 4K will fill 'em faster than you'd imagine.
