Canon EOS R Overview

  • 1Description

Configured for the aspiring filmmaker, the Canon EOS R Mirrorless Digital Camera with Ninja V Kit from B&H bundles the multimedia mirrorless body with an Atomos Ninja V 5" 4K HDMI Recording Monitor, a power kit for the external monitor, a mount for attaching the monitor to the camera, and an HDMI cable.

  • Canon EOS R Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only)

The first step in Canon's mirrorless evolution, the EOS R pairs a redeveloped lens mount and updated full-frame image sensor for a unique and sophisticated multimedia camera system. Revolving around the new RF lens mount, the EOS R is poised to be the means from which to make the most of a new series of lenses and optical technologies.

Focusing on the camera itself, the EOS R features a high-resolution 30.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor along with a DIGIC 8 image processor. The combination of these technologies offers a wide sensitivity range up to a native ISO 40000, fast continuous shooting to 8 fps, and UHD 4K30 video recording. In addition to imaging, the sensor also facilitates an advanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF system, which uses 5655 selectable points for quickly and accurately acquiring focus. This focusing system is also sensitive down to EV -6 for working in impressively dark conditions. The AF system is also perfectly matched to the UHD 4K video recording capabilities, which are also rounded out by Movie Digital IS to minimize camera shake, built-in Canon Log gamma for a greater dynamic range, and 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 output over HDMI for even greater color control.

Beyond the performance attributes, this camera has been designed from the ground up and features a high-resolution 3.69m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder for clear and bright eye-level viewing. Conversely, a rear 3.15" 2.1m-dot LCD touchscreen is also featured, and has a swivel design to suit working from high and low angles. Also catering to the tactile cravings is a Multi-Function bar, which is customizable for intuitively adjusting shooting settings. And as a camera built to withstand the toughest environments, the magnesium alloy body is dust and moisture-sealed.

    Canon RF Lens Mount
Beginning with a new lens mount, the EOS R is the first camera to support Canon's line of RF-mount lenses. This mount is characterized by its wide 54mm diameter and short 20mm flange-back distance, which promotes the ability to design lenses that are both faster and smaller than their SLR equivalents. The mount also incorporates a 12-pin electronic contact system for more sophisticated autofocus and image stabilization capabilities. This mount design also lends full compatibility to existing EF and EF-S-mount lenses via an optional EF-EOS R Mount Adapter.
30.3MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 8 Image Processor
A large 30.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor is featured and serves as an ideal balance between high-resolution output, low-light performance, and high-speed capabilities. When paired with the DIGIC 8 image processor, the EOS R affords a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-40000, which can be expanded to ISO 50-102400 for working in a variety of lighting conditions. Quick continuous shooting to 8 fps is also supported for photographing moving subjects.
    Dual Pixel CMOS AF
Dual Pixel CMOS AF offers smooth and fast focusing performance in a similar manner to how a camcorder acquires focus. This system integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a broad and dense network of 5655 phase-detection gathering elements across a majority of the image sensor to reduce focus hunting for faster, more direct control of focus placement. When working with still imagery, this focusing system works to acquire focus quickly and accurately, making it ideally suited to shooting and tracking moving subjects so that critical focus is attained with each shot. When shooting video, a Movie Servo AF mode offers smooth and natural focusing when changing from different subjects or different distances within the scene, as well as the ability to specify tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face Tracking priority. Benefited by the Touch AF system, rack focus is possible simply by touching elements within the scene on the touchscreen in order to change focus in an intuitive manner. Subject tracking in movies is also heightened due to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to recognize subjects and maintain focus when working within changing or cluttered scenery. Additionally, the focus system is sensitive down to EV -6 for working in truly low-light conditions with accurate AF capabilities.
UHD 4K Video Recording and Canon Log Gamma
Designed for multimedia image-maker, the EOS R supports UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution recording at up to 30 fps at 480 Mb/s, along with Full HD 1080p shooting at 60 fps and HD 720p at 120 fps for slow motion playback. When recording in-camera, 4K video has 4:2:2 sampling and 8-bit color depth, a 4:2:2 10-bit clean output in ITU-R CT.2020 is possible when using an external recorder.

Integrated Canon Log also allows users to capture flat images with an improved dynamic range of 800%, or 12 stops. This function makes it easier to match cameras in post-production as well as provides the most latitude and potential for color grading. For monitoring, a View Assist function is available, which emulates a graded look for more accurate viewing on the camera's LCD.

Audio can be recorded using the on-board stereo microphone or an optional external mic can also be used via the 3.5mm mic jack.
    Dual Pixel RAW
First introduced with the EOS 5D Mark IV, Dual Pixel RAW allows photographers to record all the information the sensor's unique pixel architecture can deliver, providing a way for fine adjustments to be made after the image is taken. These adjustments include focus fine tuning that can help you ever-so-slightly adjust the focus point to bring out extra details, shift bokeh around for improved composition, and reduce the impact of ghosting on your photos. This requires the use of Canon's Digital Photo Professional software.
    Body Design
    • Integrated 3.69m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder has 0.71x magnification and affords a bright and clear means for eye-level viewing.
    • Rear 3.15" 2.1m-dot LCD features a swivel design for easier use when working from high, low, and front-facing angles. It is also a touchscreen for intuitive control over shooting, playback, and menu navigation controls.
    • Customizable Multi-Function Bar is located near the viewfinder on the rear of the camera, and can be set to control four functions using right, left, slide, and press movements. It can be used to adjust ISO or white balance, to check focus/display focus info or AF modes, change to movie shooting modes, use flexible-priority AE, or be customized for other functions.
    • Top panel incorporates a dot-matrix LCD, which provides quick access to important camera settings.
    • One SD memory card slot featured, and supports the UHS-II protocol for faster read and write speeds to better support 4K video recording and fast continuous shooting.
    • Magnesium alloy body design is lightweight, durable, and features dust- and water-resistant seals for use in a variety of weather conditions.
    • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity enable wireless sharing, control, and image transfer with a compatible smart device via the Canon Camera Connect app, which also supports geotagging your files using your mobile device's location data.
    • Included LP-E6N rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 430 shots per charge, and in-camera charging is supported via the PD-E1 USB Power Adapter. This camera is also compatible with the LP-E6 battery, however is not supported for in-camera charging.
    Other Camera Features
    • Digital Lens Optimizer helps to minimize the appearance of various optical aberrations in-camera, including diffraction, for cleaner image quality.
    • Multi shot noise reduction technology records four sequential exposures and then combines them in-camera to produce an image with smoother tones and lower noise to suit long exposure images.
    • Images can be saved as Compact Raw (C-RAW / .CR3) files, which offer smaller file sizes for faster post-processing.
    • Language Support: English, German, French, Dutch, Danish, Portuguese, Finnish, Italian, Ukraine, Norwegian, Swedish, Spanish, Greek, Russian, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Vietnamese, Hindi, Romanian, Turkish, Arabic, Thai, Simplified/Traditional Chinese, Korean, Malay, Indonesian, and Japanese.

  • Atomos Ninja V 5" 4K HDMI Recording Monitor

The Atomos Ninja V 5" 4K HDMI Recording Monitor is a 5" on-camera monitor/recorder that records and plays back DCI 4K, UHD 4K, and HD video from purpose-built mini-SSDs. It features a 10-bit FRC IPS screen with a brightness of 1000 cd/m², which makes it suitable for use in both exterior and interior conditions. The AtomHDR display technology allows you to accurately monitor your log gamma footage without having to view flat, washed-out looking images or use a LUT to compress the dynamic range and color space. The monitor supports popular log formats from Sony, Canon, Panasonic, ARRI, RED, and JVC cameras. The settings only affect viewing, with recorded video remaining unaltered.

Built to withstand the rigors of production, the Ninja V features an aluminum chassis and powers from a single L-series battery. Additional features include a variety of onscreen exposure analysis, framing, and focus assist tools, as well as anamorphic de-squeeze. A power supply and SSD Caddy are included with the unit.

Designed with an interface that differs somewhat from prior units, the Ninja V's HDR functions are accessed through the MON buttons and its ProRes options are chosen via the arrows on the unit's upper left corner. The Ninja V can record to both AtomX SSDmini or standard 2.5" SSD drives, fitting up to 150 minutes of 4K video on an 1TB drive. Separately available AtomX Ethernet/NDI and SYNC Expansion Modules enable you to output live video over IP or add wireless timecode for multicamera shoots respectively.

    AtomHDR

With AtomHDR you can monitor up to ten stops of dynamic range of your camera's LOG image. Most conventional monitors can only display six or seven stops, which is fine for standard footage; but a Log image will look overly flat. It is also superior to monitoring with a loaded LUT, which can clip the highlights and mask shadows.

Canon EOS R Reviews

EOS R Mirrorless Digital Camera with Ninja V Kit is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 126.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing camera! I shoot 4-5 days a week on Canon's 5dmkiv and 5dsr and I wanted to try a mirrorless for gimbal work. And this works beautifully! Great video and stills even at 2000 and 2500 iso! I purchased the battery grip and EF lens adapter for more versatility off the gimbal, too. It shoots CR3 files which at this time aren't supported by Capture One or Lightroom. Initial processing in Photoshop yields impressive results. The lens ring and programmable slider on the back are nice touches and quickly became second nature operating the camera. The overall build feels great, especially with the optional battery grip. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply Amazing Coming from a 5D2, this was a bit of a learning curve. Since the entire camera and every button is customizable, Ive had a hard time figuring out what I want each button to do. Now that Ive got each one customized to my shooting style, I am truly impressed! Is it perfect? Nope, nothing is! But it suits my style perfectly! Image quality far surpasses my 5D2. The autofocus is dead on, EVERY SINGLE TIME! Build quality is top notch, it just feels SOLID! If your on the fence from reading some of the negative reviews, dont be! This is a solid camera that I believe will serve me very well for many years to come!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Natural progression for Canon After reading negative headlines about this camera I was skeptical but I think Canon has made a nice polished package here. I own a Canon 5D Mark IV and this camera seems identical in a smaller form factor, plus things like 4K time lapse make it even more useful to me. The one con is using the adaptor for EF lenses since it makes it larger. Lenses work as expected but the length of the camera is just so large with an adaptor. As RF lenses are released this will be less of a worry for me. This camera has great image and video quality and I’d recommend it to anyone already in the Canon ecosystem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Upgrade for 6D This camera was an upgrade of my five year old 6D with approximately 100000 shots on it. I was worried a little about the learning curve for the new camera, but It was relatively easy. I like having the electronic view finder to see the exposure before firing the shot. I really like the fv mode which gives me ultimate control. One thing is that it allows for easy switching between stills to video and back by just using the record button. It is taking me a little while to get use to the focusing system though, but it is definitely better than my 6D.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love It !!! Seamless transition for Canon users. Very intuitive. EVF is amazing. Low light work is amazing. I think 30mb files are the perfect size. Lens is crisp. Still use my 5DMIII but this camera has altered my work flow. Looking forward to a few new lenses. As far as lenses I also purchased the adapter for my EF lenses. What can I say they all work perfectly with the autofocus system. My 200mm F/2 makes this camera look like a toy but wow the images are amazing. Very happy. My tilt shift works perfectly as well especially with the manual focus aids built in. Looking forward to some of the new glass coming down the pipe from Canon. I don't care or do video so no comment there. Thanks Canon, I find myself not needing to use my reading glasses as much with this camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Allan in Delaware Ive used the 20D, 40D 6D, 6Dll, 7D, 7d II. This camera is different. Do not jump in and start changing camera parameters. Some of these controls are not visible. First, Google Rudy Winston and Canon EOS R on YouTube. I found 3 videos. Read his walkthrough of the camera. Theres a lot to understand. Once you feel comfortable, start to modify parameters to your liking. You will be amazed at the focus speed, camera photographs quality, they really pop. I did change the file name. Start slow and easy and enjoy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Its a great camera I really like this camera, the focus is DEAD on every time.  The build is great,  I have no idea what the guy that said the build was cheap was talking about.  I have been using a Canon M5 and 7D II for some time now and the M5 while a mirrorless camera did not focus well with aftermarket lenses, the R is awesome with my aftermarket lenses.  Tamron 35 1.8 SP, Tamron 100-400, Sigma 150-600 C, Sigma 18-35 C.  It will focus where you cant see, its that good.  The COLOR is awesome.   I think we all know the cons of the R by now,  no 4k 60 or 120 fps, only 1 SD slot.  Not a problem for me,  I take pictures and do very little video.  One other con for the R is its NOT a speed machine but I have the 7DII for that :) Its pleasure  :) Dave

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great pictures and not too confusing So far, Im completely happy with the R. Ive had it two months and have a pretty good feel for it already, about the same transitioning to the 5D 3 from a 50D. Ive not had problems using the menu bar (for ISO) and havent hit it incidentally yet. The picture quality is superb and, with the RF 24-105L lens, the image stabilization is excellent as well. Its beautiful to be able to use the other EF, EF-S mount lenses as well, with the adapter (I got the control version which also is a nice control of which ever variable one wants to use it for). Im an advanced amateur/low end semi-pro; it works well for my purposes and I look forward to using it more.

Moving up from a 5dIII with a Tascam DR-701D ...

Moving up from a 5dIII with a Tascam DR-701D Currently, camera connected to 701D via HDMI to trigger recording. Plan to purchase the EOS R with a Ninja V for external 4:2:2 10-bit UHD. 1) How do I connect the Tascam so I can use the HDMI trigger? Camera - Tascam - Ninja V? Camera - Ninja V - Tascam? 2) Do I actually need to press record on the camera? Simultaneous recording at 10-bit 4:2:2 is not possible apparently... So does the camera output the signal over HDMI all the time? If so, will pressing record on the Ninja V also trigger recording on the Tascam? Thanks!
Asked by: Amit
The Ninja V does have an HDMI loop out, you will want to connect the camera to the Ninja V directly for recording. From there you could loop out from the Ninja V to the Tascam. However if it will trigger the DR-701D from the loop out is something you will need to test for yourself to see the results. It may or may not work, but this would be the only way to connect it.

I have had mine for 2 weeks. The only thing I don't like is the slight lag / stutter / jump after taking a shot. (with image review off). You take the photo, it seems fine and then there's a split second where it stutters. Its annoying. Someone suggested I use a faster SD card. 300/ms. Anyone else tried this solution? Did it work? Any tips? I really want it to me and not the camera.
Asked by: Elizabeth
I initially had the same problem. I believe it was a combination of SD card write speed and image quality settings. My image quality settings were RAW + L 6720x4480. The card was only 80mb/sec. By using a much faster card (Lexar Professional 2000x 64GB SDXC UHS-II/U3 (Up to 300MB/s Read) ) and setting image quality to CRAW+L 6720x4480 I haven't had the problem again. Yes, it's an expensive card, but a necessity for 4k video anyway. I don't know that changing to CRAW (smaller file size) helped since I did both changes at the same time. The camera has been great for me since then.

Can you record to an external recorder and internally to the SD Card simultaneously?
Asked by: NICHOLAS
In most cases that is possible. However if you output from the EOS-R at 4:2:2 10 Bit you are not able to record internally as well. In that case you will only be to record externally.

Does it have manual focus aid Peaking ? Thanks
Asked by: Tibor
Yes, the Canon EOS R has manual focus aid peaking. You can change the peaking color to red, yellow, or blue. You can also change the level to high or low. Canon also added a new manual focus meter and graphic which tells you the distance to focus on screen, along with these triangles that once they meet together, they turn green (meaning you're in focus) making it easier to focus in manual mode.
