Sonnet Allegro Overview

Add four USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports to your compatible computer with the Allegro 4-Port USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C PCIe Card from Sonnet. Equipped with dual USB 3.2 Gen 2 controllers and capable of up to 20 Gb/s of total data throughput, this PCIe 2.0 x4 card can supply up to 7.5W of power per port to connected hard drives, SSDs, and other supported USB Type-C devices. The card is compatible with select versions of Windows, Mac, and Linux.

General Features

Speed and Power

Sonnet's Allegro USB Type-C 4-Port PCIe computer card supports data transfers from a single USB 3.1 Gen 2 SSD RAID device at up to 800 MB/s. With its dual-controller design, the card can simultaneously transfer data to two connected drives at up to 660 MB/s each. With four drives connected, the four ports support simultaneous 300 MB/s transfers. The card provides 7.5W of power through each of its ports, supporting USB bus-powered hard drives and SSDs without the need to connect an additional AC power adapter.

No Auxiliary Power Required

Ordinary USB Type-C cards need a separate power plug connection. Sonnet's 4-port USB Type-C card gets the power required to operate connected drives from the slot in which it's installed. This allows you to install the Sonnet card in any compatible computer or Thunderbolt expansion chassis without worrying about the availability of extra power connectors.

Independent, Per-Port Power Regulation

Typical USB Type-C cards can deliver poor power regulation, allowing a connected drive to be forced off (auto-disconnected) when an additional drive is connected or disconnected. The Allegro card is designed to protect each port from power glitches on adjacent ports, which helps to prevent auto-disconnects.

Resettable Fuses

The Allegro card features a resettable fuse on each port that's designed to protect both card and computer should a cable or peripheral fail. Resetting a tripped fuse is simple: just shut down and restart your computer.

Optimized for Thunderbolt

Got a Thunderbolt connection, but no PCIe slot? The Allegro USB-C 4-Port PCIe card is ideal for use in Sonnet's optional Thunderbolt 2- and Thunderbolt 3-to-PCIe card expansion systems, including Echo Express and xMac desktop and rackmount chassis, allowing you to add four SuperSpeed+ USB Type-C ports to your computer without expansion card slots.

Broad Device Support, Easy Installation

The Allegro USB Type-C 4-Port PCIe card features hot-pluggable and hot-swappable device connection support with automatic device configuration, and works with most USB-IF-compliant USB peripherals. This full-height Sonnet card installs easily into most PCIe x4 (mechanical) or larger slots.

Does this do thunderbolt on a mac pro 5,1?

Does this do thunderbolt on a mac pro 5,1?
Asked by: Anonymous
Thunderbolt of any kind is NOT supported on any classic (pre-2013) Mac Pro without significant hacking. But this and several other PCIe USB-C Gen 3.2 cards WILL WORK in a Mac Pro 5,1. The good ones should provide double the throughput of USB 3.1. Sonnet began using an updated the controller in this card last month ( Jan 2020), so no telling which version this is. Bit of a commitment, but here is a great resource on classic Mac Pro USB 3.x cards... https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/usb-3-x-pcie-cards-for-classic-mac-pro.1501482/ The first page is a continuously updated Wiki post, the last few pages of the thread may also have some very recent updates. Skip the 100 pages in the middle! As of today 2/25/20 the wiki still refers to the old controller on this card.

What expansion chasis's are recommended with this USB-C 3.2 card. Can it be connected to a Thunderbolt 2 - I assume NOT? Eg: OWC ThunderBay 4. This is USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 N/A USB 3.2 SuperSpeed USB 20Gbps 20Gbps so are there any Expansion Chassis's that can use this and also can the MP 5,3 in the slower pcie slots use all this speed?
Asked by: Justin
It is not compatible with Thunderbolt 3. It is compatible with all USB standards. One example with USB 3.2 is https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1496990-REG/oyen_digital_3r2_2c_m_mobius_usb_c_raid_2_bay.html
