Magnus VT-6000 Overview
Fluid Head
The head features three steps of counterbalance that can be adjusted based on the size and weight of your camera and the needs of the shot.
Both pan and tilt feature three steps of drag plus a 0-setting that allows you to have the head completely free if you want.
The sliding balance camera plate features a spring-loaded locating pin and supports both 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 camera tie-down screws (included).
The camera plate features 3.25" of travel, providing a wide range of movement to balance your camera on the head for optimum operation.
A single 1/4"-20 threaded accessory mounting hole is integrated into the head and allows you to mount a variety of accessories, including articulating arms or mounting brackets.
The head features two pan handle rosettes for left- or right-handed operation. One pan handle is included with the system and includes a rosette washer that helps protect the rosettes from stripping.
Tripod Legs
The included mid-level spreader is adjustable, allowing you to spread the legs for a more stable shot or draw them close to gain height. The legs can be closed with the spreader attached.
The legs feature independent leg spread and height adjustment, which are useful for working on uneven surfaces such as rocky terrain or stairs.
The legs feature dual-spiked feet that provide solid purchase on soft surfaces when the legs are spread wide or extended to full height.
The rubber feet attach to the spiked feet for working on delicate or hard surfaces.
An elastic line with an attached hook extends from the bottom of one of the legs, allowing you to secure the legs in a closed position for storage or transport.

Is it possible to remove the spreader, in order to allow for lower height and/or when placing the tripod over an object that were the spreader would be in the way?
Beware! You can remove the spreader, but the legs will not go much wider. There is no clearing in between the ball head base and the upper part of the legs, so it works as a hard stop for those joints. No lock/release function as with many other legs. You will have to consider filing it down

Can I use the same ball head fitting to attach a slider to it; and then place the video head onto the slider?
Not natively. To be able to place the head onto a slider you would need a flat base head. This Magnus requires a 75mm bowl for proper mounting.

What does this have over the 5000 model to warrant the increased cost?
The big difference is the VT-5000 offers Variable Fluid Tilt & Fixed Pan Drag along with a Fixed Counterbalance. The VT-6000 has Stepped Fluid Tilt & Pan Drag along with Stepped Counterbalance. The VT-6000 is more adjustable and customizable to your specific needs, it is a more advanced model.

What specifically is the difference between the "fixed" model and the "stepped" model? What does "stepped" allow you to do, for the price to be double?
The "stepped" model allows you to choose how much drag you want for the tilt and pan. There are 3 levels available. The "fixed" model has one setting for each which cannot be changed. It is usually around the middle setting of the "stepped" model. The drag can also be turned off on the "stepped" model if very quick moves are needed. The counterbalance can be adjusted for light and heavy cameras on this model as well.

Can this be set up for a top- down angle shot in a small space, say on a desktop?
The tripod is not very small itself, so it wouldn't work really well in a small space. Due to the ball head, it also is not recommended to set it up as a top down shot. We would recommend looking into the photography tripods, that are smaller and are more easily able to be set up for top-down shots.
