Magnus VT-6000 Overview

The Magnus REX VT-6000 2-Stage Video Tripod with Fluid Head supports cameras and accessories weighing up to 17 pounds. The head accepts a sliding balance plate. It features independent pan and tilt locks with stepped pan and tilt drag, as well as stepped counterbalance. The 75mm leveling ball provides a wide platform for balancing your camera. A 1/4"-20 accessory mounting hole is built into the head. The legs are made from aluminum and feature three sections with lever locks. The head and legs combination features a height range of 29.3 to 65" and folds to 33.5" long for transport and storage.

Spiked feet and a mid-level spreader are an excellent combination for shooting on uneven terrain. The mid-level spreader has 4.25" of adjustment, allowing you to spread the legs wide. The spiked feet are suitable for use on exteriors and soft surfaces. When shooting on hard or delicate surfaces, the included rubber feet may give you better grip and protect the surface from the spikes. An included padded bag carries your tripod legs and head, and it includes a shoulder strap for ease of carry.

Fluid Head
The head features three steps of counterbalance that can be adjusted based on the size and weight of your camera and the needs of the shot.
Both pan and tilt each feature three steps of drag plus a 0-setting that allows you to have the head completely free if you want.
The sliding balance camera plate features a spring-loaded locating pin and supports both 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 camera tie-down screws (included).
The camera plate features 3.25" of travel, providing a wide range of movement to balance your camera on the head for optimum operation.
A single 1/4"-20 threaded accessory mounting hole is integrated into the head and allows you to mount a variety of accessories, including articulating arms or mounting brackets.
The head features two pan handle rosettes for left- or right-handed operation. One pan handle is included with the system and includes a rosette washer that helps protect the rosettes from stripping.
Tripod Legs
The included mid-level spreader is adjustable, allowing you to spread the legs for a more stable shot or draw them close to gain height. The legs can be closed with the spreader attached.
The legs feature independent leg spread and height adjustment, useful for working on even surfaces such as rocky terrain or stairs.
The legs feature dual-spiked feet that provide solid purchase on soft surfaces when the legs are spread wide or extended to full height.
The rubber feet attach to the spiked feet for working on delicate or hard surfaces.
An elastic line with attached hook extends from the bottom of one of the legs, allowing you to secure the legs in a closed position for storage or transport.

Magnus VT-6000 Reviews

very smooth but not a 17lbs capacity - jamming dials

A cheap, very smooth fluid head tripod, but not good up to 17 lbs. My Red Komodo with cn-e prime and matte box, and my fs7 w 70-200mm canon are both too heavy for this tripod. Also, some of the time the resistance dials jam, and I can no longer make adjustments. On DSLR builds its fantastic when the dials are working.

My first video tripod!

I am very happy with the features of this tripod. Although I have only used it twice as I just got it and I don't have other video tripod use experience, this is what I was wanting. I use a 600mm prime lens and camera body that weighs about 13-14lbs and it works just fine.

Nice compromise

The legs sound a bit clunky and the plastic on the latches is not nice to the touch, but the head works heavenly. The one negative thing is that the bubble on the level doesn't always seem to work, like someone else pointed out, which doesn't give me much hope for the quality of everything else, but I still love the fluid head. And the bag is also very nice, compact and easy to carry. I wish Magnus had not cut corners with the latches and the bubble.

Love the bang for your buck. Everything you need in a professional tripod, minus the name-brand tax

I love this tripod

I love the height and weight of this tripod. I used this to film a ceremony from the back of a crowded room. It has a very smooth head, and it incredibly sturdy. The rubber feet are an added bonus...The room i was filming in had some pretty slippery floors. The packaging was so pristine, everything came so nice and neat. [I have received this product in exchange for my honest review]

Its good

I have only used it on a few shoots so far. Bought a Komodo to replace my DSLR shooting but the old tripod could not handle the weight. Didn't want to spend $1K+ This has the bells and whistles that expensive tripos have. Counter balance so my camera doesn't fall forward of backward, fluid head with adjustable drag for both pan and tilt. Plus the 1/4-20 threads to attach external monitors and such. These features cost a couple hundred more than the other versions of the tripod, but it is well worth it since I hope it will last 15 years like my last tripod.

Great experience with B&H and Magnus

This is my first video tripod with an actual fluid head. I really like it. It's not for traveling, this is a heavy piece of equipment, it provides a nice stable foundation, no need to add weights to combat light wind. I had one small issue however, not with the tripod but with the carrying bag that comes with it. It comes with a very nice padded bag with a shoulder strap for moving such a heavy item around. There was a small tear in the bag near where one of the straps connects. B&H suggested I contact the manufacturer directly since I really didn't want to return the whole item as defective just because its case had a defect. Magnus was great and sent me a replacement for the bag quickly. The new one is flawless. I couldn't be happier.

Is it possible to remove the spreader, in order to allow for lower height and/or when placing the tripod over an object that were the spreader would be in the way?
Asked by: Jonas
Beware! You can remove the spreader, but the legs will not go much wider. There is no clearing in between the ball head base and the upper part of the legs, so it works as a hard stop for those joints. No lock/release function as with many other legs. You will have to consider filing it down

Can I use the same ball head fitting to attach a slider to it; and then place the video head onto the slider?
Asked by: Shane
Not natively. To be able to place the head onto a slider you would need a flat base head. This Magnus requires a 75mm bowl for proper mounting.

What does this have over the 5000 model to warrant the increased cost?
Asked by: Rick
The big difference is the VT-5000 offers Variable Fluid Tilt & Fixed Pan Drag along with a Fixed Counterbalance. The VT-6000 has Stepped Fluid Tilt & Pan Drag along with Stepped Counterbalance. The VT-6000 is more adjustable and customizable to your specific needs, it is a more advanced model.

What specifically is the difference between the "fixed" model and the "stepped" model? What does "stepped" allow you to do, for the price to be double?
Asked by: Larry
The "stepped" model allows you to choose how much drag you want for the tilt and pan. There are 3 levels available. The "fixed" model has one setting for each which cannot be changed. It is usually around the middle setting of the "stepped" model. The drag can also be turned off on the "stepped" model if very quick moves are needed. The counterbalance can be adjusted for light and heavy cameras on this model as well.

Can this be set up for a top- down angle shot in a small space, say on a desktop?
Asked by: Rohan
The tripod is not very small itself, so it wouldn't work really well in a small space. Due to the ball head, it also is not recommended to set it up as a top down shot. We would recommend looking into the photography tripods, that are smaller and are more easily able to be set up for top-down shots.
