  • Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX99 Digital Camera

A sleek form factor along with capable imaging and a long-reaching zoom, the Cyber-shot DSC-HX99 from Sony is a compact camera well-suited for travel and everyday shooting. Revolving around a back-illuminated 18.2MP Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor, the HX99 is capable of producing notably smooth and clear imagery with low noise levels, along with an expandable sensitivity range up to ISO 12800. The sensor and processor combination also avail fast performance throughout the camera system, including a 10-fps continuous shooting rate and UHD 4K30p video recording. Complementing the imaging is a balanced physical design, which incorporates both a pop-up OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder and 180° tilting 3.0" 921k-dot touchscreen LCD, along with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for wireless image sharing and remote camera control via a linked smartphone or tablet. Contrasting its sleek size, the HX99 is also distinguished by its impressive 30x zoom ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* lens, which provides a 24-720mm equivalent zoom range. Spanning wide-angle to super telephoto perspectives, this lens benefits from Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld imagery. Designed to be a versatile, all-in-one pocketable camera, the HX99 mixes both capability and intuitiveness to appeal to a wide range of shooting needs.

18.2MP Exmor R CMOS Sensor and BIONZ X Image Processor
Utilizing an 18.2MP 1/2.3" Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor, the HX99 is able to produce high-resolution stills and UHD 4K video with notable clarity and smooth tonality. The sensor employs a back-illuminated design, which allows it to achieve reduced noise levels along with a native sensitivity range to ISO 3200 that can be extended to ISO 12800 for working in low-light conditions. The sensor and processor also provide a continuous shooting rate of 10 fps for up to 10 consecutive frames in a burst.

Additionally, the HX99 is the first HX-series camera capable of recording UHD 4K video, at either 30p or 24p frame rates, as well as Full HD video. 4K video uses full sensor pixel readout to record approximately 1.6x times the required information, and this oversampling process helps to deliver greater clarity along with reduced moiré and other artifacts.
    ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 30x Zoom Lens
Covering wide-angle to super telephoto perspectives, the built-in 30x ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* lens spans a 24-720mm equivalent focal length range. Five aspherical elements are incorporated in the optical design, which reduce spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range, and a T* anti-reflective coating helps to control lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color neutrality.

Complementing the optical design, Optical SteadyShot image stabilization is also used to minimize the appearance of camera shake. An Intelligent Active Mode is also available to reduce blur common to shooting video while moving. Also aiding in achieving sharp imagery, Fast Intelligent AF employs an optimized spatial object detection algorithm to quicken focusing speeds, and Eye AF can be used to automatically detect and focus on the eyes of the main subject.
    Body Design and Wireless Connectivity
    • Helping to maintain a sleek form factor, the 638.4k-dot OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder employs a unique pop-up design to retain a pocketable overall size when not in use.
    • Rear 3.0" 921k-dot LCD monitor employs a 180° tilting design to facilitate working from low angles or taking front-facing selfies, and this screen is also a touchscreen for intuitive menu navigation as well as the ability to work with Touch Focus, Touch Pad AF, and Touch Shutter functions.
    • A control ring surrounds the lens for directly and intuitively adjusting shooting settings, such as shutter speed and aperture, among others.
    • Built-in pop-up flash provides additional illumination when working in low-light conditions.
    • The large right-hand grip offers increased comfort and support for longer shooting sessions.
    • Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC lets you wirelessly share imagery to a smartphone or tablet for instant sharing online. This connectivity also lets you remotely control the camera from a mobile device. Additionally, Bluetooth connectivity also lets you embed your mobile device's location data to your images for geotagging.
    • Included NP-BX1 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 370 shots per charge when working with the rear monitor, or 300 shots per charge when shooting with the electronic viewfinder.

  • SanDisk 32GB Extreme UHS-I microSDHC Memory Card with SD Adapter

Designed for action cameras and mobile devices, the 32GB Extreme UHS-I microSDHC Memory Card from SanDisk features a storage capacity of 32GB and supports maximum read speeds of 100 MB/s and maximum write speeds of 60 MB/s. This card has also been designed with the V30 Video Speed Class rating, which guarantees minimum write speeds of at least 30 MB/s. All of this allows for users to immerse themselves in extreme sports videography and photography at resolutions of Ultra HD 4K (3840 x 2160) and Full HD (1920 x 1080).

While this card has been designed for cameras that are UHS-I / V30 compatible, it may be used in devices that do not support UHS-I / V30. However, bear in mind that this card will then default to your device's speed class and bus rating, such as UHS-I and U3, which also supports minimum write speeds of 30 MB/s, UHS-I and U1, which supports minimum write speeds of 10 MB/s, or Class 10, which also supports minimum write speeds of 10 MB/s.

Aside from support for UHS-I, V30, and U3, SanDisk also built this card with support for the Application Performance Class 1 (A1) spec, which includes optimizations to give Android users an improved mobile experience, delivering faster mobile app performance. The A1 spec allows the card to manage random read input-output access per second (IOPS) operations so it can quickly open apps and process accompanying tasks, such as audio, graphics, saved profiles, and in-app permissions.

As with most SanDisk media, this memory card is shockproof, X-ray proof, and waterproof, while also being able to withstand temperatures from -13 to 185°F, allowing you to take this card with you into extreme environments, such as snow, deserts, and pools. Should the card's data become compromised, you also benefit from the option to download RescuePRO Deluxe software as well as a limited lifetime warranty. Included is a microSD to SD adapter, allowing this card to be used in SD-compatible devices.

Sony DSC-HX99 Reviews

Cyber-shot DSC-HX99 Digital Camera Deluxe Kit is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ideal travel camera Have owned this camera for a couple of months now, just returned from a months vacations in Spain where I put her through its paces; The optics are excellent as expected from a Leitz lens; The electronics also excellent, as expected from Sony; The ergonomics are great, it will easily slip into and out of a coat or blue jean pocket; The zoom is amazing from 24-700 mm although sharp focusing at full telephoto can be a little iffy without support; The body is somewhat slippery so I purchased the leather-like old fashioned, elegant camera case and used it all the time minus the front cover piece for a much safer hold.....For the money in my opinion it cant be beat as an ideal travel camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Camera... if youre willing to learn I make my living as a photographer. And I agree with the old adage that the best camera is the one you have with you. If Im working I put together the gear I need to get the job done... I have a lot of it after 40 years. A lot of this gear is heavy to lug around and so darned expensive that double checking to see if its safe is not a joy. But thats how you get great shots. That only makes up a part of my life. The rest of the time Im being a normal human being. One of the things I enjoy daily is taking my dogs for a walk... and they are big and single-minded. Packing a dslr and dealing with them is just too much and way too risky. For years Ive packed a subcompact (usually Sonys) that, at a reach, could capture that unexpected opportunity. I wear them on a long lanyard around my neck that goes to my big front pocket and keep it in an easily accessible a neoprene sleeve... sometimes a cut down wool sock top (so it comes out easier and faster). The HX99 seemed too good to be true... and if you leave it on Program or Automatic you will more often than not get mediocre shots (as with every camera). One reviewer said the menu was impossible to understand. One said he didnt need another camera with endless ways to get a bad shot. Its a complicated and unbelievably feature rich serious camera and a casual photographer would be better off buying something thats easier to use. But for a professional photographer with the patience and experience to realize the full potential of the camera... its a little miracle. It is full of compromises (what camera isnt)... but in the right hands you can pull professional images from it. Usable commercial images. Its that good. Word of advice: Sony has pulled this amazing little camera off by fitting it inside a very narrow window of prosumer perimeters. For example dont be greedy. The zoom is unbelievable. And pretty darn crisp from end to end. And outside with plenty of light you can get a great image at full some using ISO 100. But dont try any additional crops or digital zooming. Your zoom is your crop. Keep that in mind and Ive taken usable shots at up to ISO 800. The stabilization is amazing... and I use a lot of Nikon VR lenses.  I cant speak to the video yet, but even offering 4k at 30fps is pretty exceptional. And the little Ive done so far leads me to believe that the same guidelines I mentioned for photos will be the same for video. In conclusion... if you want a point and shoot for family photos you are wasting your money on this camera. If you fit into the category that I do in my photography... and believe that the best camera is the one you have with you... this camera will challenge and delight you. P.S. If you are hamfisted and prone to dropping things this may not be the camera for you. This is not a camera to throw in your back pocket. It is built lighter than its much more expensive brothers... lighter in construction... but a real featherweight machine on the positive side, because of it. Ron Thierfelder

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lots of ways of taking terrible pictures This camera has a wonderful set of user adjustable options and features. The one problem is it takes terrible pictures. I dont need a thousand ways of taking bad pics. The 4k video was pretty good and usable.  But the pics were horrible, even in good light. I guess I am just used to better. It is on par with a cell phone and not even a modern, good cell phone camera. I can honestly say the only advantage to this camera over a top tier cell phone camera is the zoom.  I sent it back.  B&H was wonderful on the return, no questions asked. The review is not a bad reflection on their top notch customer service.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Have your expectations in line Since 2000, I have owned thirty digital cameras (many/most bought from B&H), nine of them being Sony including the HX9, HX50 and HX90.  If I have learned anything it is that there are inherent limitations to small-sensor, long-lens cameras when it comes to picture quality, so you need to decide if that is a fair trade-off for the super zoom and compact form factor.  For me, the 50 was not, and the 90 bricked on me, so after seven years and over 5,000 photos and movies the HX9 is still going strong (and has the best grip of any H camera Sony has made).  I still use the 9 on occasion but have sworn off buying any more small-sensor cameras, instead using the Sony a6000 with the 18-135mm lens which is an awesome combo.  Frankly, my phone takes incredible snapshots, and truth is that I dont need that ultra-long zoom anyway, but if you do then the 99 is probably the best pocket camera you will find for good results - just dont expect great results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous Camera To get a Sony with 24-720 and shots 4K video. Plus a Zeiss lens for under $500.00 is amazing. Photo quality is excellent. Very fast focus.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lots of value, lots to learn The HX99 is one of a new class of camera that goes beyond the traditional sense of a point and shoot camera as being simplistic. The HX99 is anything but simplistic, offering creative control akin to a DSLR. However, to tap into that, you have to be willing to learn how this camera works and perhaps read the downloadable manual. Others are down rating this camera without doing so, such as the reviewers who didn’t realize that you can delete multiple images at once or that the menu system is hard to use. In fact, for so much functionality I found the menu system fairly logical but I did need to consult the online manual and enable the in-camera guide. I have a background in photography that goes back to the early days of digital (sub-megapixel) cameras but still needed guidance from the manual. On the other hand, as others have written, this product represents a favorable trade off in function and cost. For many, this is a viable alternative to the Sony RX100 line, with a zoom range well in excess of those. Not unlike most prosumer DSLR long zoom lenses, the HX can’t open below f3.5. As such, there is an inherent limit to the low light performance as well as a need to properly steady the camera to use the upper end of the zoom range. The HX99 sensor is substantially smaller than the one inch sensors in the RX100 line but, with an understanding of the cameras limits, produces video and stills that are closer than that difference suggests. Even some low light shots can be usable if as long as you are not going to be analytically pixel peeping. There is a lot of technology in this little camera, which can be a useful tool for those who are willing to take the time to learn and understand it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small and functional for the light at heart... If you are buying this camera because you want to take decent pictures with a very small light camera, with a nice zoom range this will fit the bill. If you want a light easy to carry camera this is a good choice. Dont expect it to replace your full frame camera if you are in to fine art photography.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Such an interesting camera. Takes great photos. I like the panorama feature. The Sony HX99 fits easily inside my pocket.
