  • Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L Tilt-Shift Lens

Presenting an ultra-wide field of view with advanced perspective and focus control, the TS-E 17mm f/4L is a Canon L-series tilt-shift lens well-suited to architecture and interior photography. Up to +/- 6.5° of tilt is possible, for focus control, and +/- 12mm of shift, to adjust perspective and composition. The tilt-shift mechanism can be rotated +/- 90° for applying movements in any direction, and a tilt-locking mechanism can be used while shooting for greater stability.

Complementing the operation of the lens, this L-series prime is also distinguished by its optical design that features four of Ultra-Low Dispersion elements to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations as well as one aspherical element to minimize spherical aberrations and distortion. Individual elements also feature a Subwavelength Coating to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color neutrality. Additionally, a floating optical system and a rear focus design help to maintain consistent image quality throughout the focusing range, from 9.8" to infinity.

Perspective control, tilt-shift lens affords +/- 12mm of shift and +/- 6.5° of tilt, and both types of movements can be applied independently, and parallel or perpendicular to one another. Additionally, the tilt and shift functions can be rotated +/- 90° for applying the movements in distinct directions.
Tilt-locking mechanism ensures the lens stays in place while shooting.
Four Ultra-Low Dispersion elements are used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve greater clarity and color accuracy.
One aspherical element limits distortion and spherical aberrations to realize greater sharpness and accurate rendering.
A Sub Wavelength Coating has been applied to individual elements to control lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Floating optical system, along with a rear focusing mechanism, maintains consistent image quality throughout the focusing range, from 9.8" to infinity.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field techniques.

    Canon 17mm f/4.0 reviews

    TS-E 17mm f/4L Tilt-Shift Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 151.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything I hoped it would be and more Technically excellent, optically astounding and simply amazing. If you are an architectural photographer, you already know that you need this. If you are a landscape photographer and are tired of shooting towards the sky at a 45 degree angle and watching all the trees vertically converge towards the top center of the photograph, then you also need this. If you have deep pockets and only want the very best toys whether you know how to use them well or not, then you need this, too! Make sure you purchase the Fotodiox Wonderpana Freearc system with a uv filter as it will act as your protector of the bulbous front end while allowing full movement with no vignetting!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply Amazing This lens is technically flawless and simply amazing. I shoot landscape and architectural photography. This lens handles both so well. Of course, it's main application will be architectural photography. But it shines in landscape as well, especially if you would like to look up towards the sky at a 45 degree angle and not have all the trees vertically converging toward the center of the photograph! So, if you are wondering is it worth the money, it is for me. And if you are a serious landscape or architectural photographer, it will be for you as well. And yes, there is a third party filter and pinch cap attachment that allows full movement with no vignetting, contrary to what other reviewers say. So, have your cake and eat it too!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fine lens for architecture As a professional architectural photographer, the first tests I have done with this lens are wonderful. It is very sharp, though as a manual focus lens, you have to be very careful with your focussing. Even with its full shift, there is very little vignetting in the upper corners of the frame. The lens is very heavy and has to be handled delicately. Because of its protruding front element, it has to be handled even more carefully, covering it with the lens cap after virtually every shot. The first few tests I did were all hand held, making it clear it can be used like that fairly easily. I would recommend this lens unhesitatingly to those who shoot architecture.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Lens - Sharp My initial tests show a very clean corner-to-corner sharpness, with very little vignetting. Distortion is minimal and is easily corrected in PS. In a side-by-side comparison with the 17-40 sharpness is similar in the center, with the 17ts with just a bit more resolution. The real difference with the 17ts, is the edge sharpness which is excellent. I was also very pleased as an architectural photographer that the lens now has the option to change the relationship of the rise fall / tilt & shift / swing. The only item of concern is the exuding glass element in the front which adds an extra level of safety concern when using the lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unique ultra-wide tilt/shift lens Exceptional wide angle tilt/shift lens is great fun in cities or other tight spaces. Image quality is exceptional unshifted, but stop down to f/11 for a full shift. Image quality ranges from outstanding wide open over most of the unshifted frame to just good at the edges of the shifted frame at f/11. Fully shifted, image quality not acceptable until f/8. Flare control is outstanding, and mechanics are excellent, and build is superior to Nikon tilt/shift lenses. This lens is unique for its outrageously wide angle view, nearly a fisheye when fully shifted. In that context, it is unequalled by any other T/S lens. Look to the 24/3.5L II for another excellent choice. Be careful with the front element!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New favorite lens This is a go-to lens for real estate photography. Perfect lines, gorgeous color, lots of room to shoot in natural light, especially with bracketed shots. It's a tiny bit technical, (i.e., tilt must be locked in place to keep focus throughout the image, rotation needed to capture panoramas without distortion, manual focus only), but that's part of the fun. It's impossible to use a hood AND get this wide an angle of view, so be careful moving from position to position, especially through doorways as the round lens element is exposed. With the lens attached, the camera doesn't lay flat on its side and the cap is plastic, so I store the lens on-camera with the camera on it's back (lens element facing up).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome for the experienced shooter This lens is the answer to my wish to use my view camera experience without going back to film or medium format. I shoot mainly with a Canon EOS 1Ds Mk 3, and the camera is somewhere between a Hasselblad and 4 x 5. But, it has not had the ability to do the most sophisticated landscape and building shots because of the 35mm format. This lens fixes that for me. You WILL need to understand what you are doing; this isn't a point-and-shoot product! But, if you have used a view camera and want much of the capability without all of the inconvenience and complexity, you will be very glad that you bought this lens. BTW, it has INCREDIBLE optics but everyone else has already said that!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The lens I have been waiting for This is simply a magnificent piece of glass. Can be used as a 17mm prime lens and performs better than any other wide angle prime in the Canon lineup. Great quality, no chromatic aberration, solid build. As an architectural lens, it cannot be matched. Shooting European cathedrals and basilicas is very challenging and this lens changes the game. Top to bottom, front to back captures, both portrait and landscape. Replaced the old 24mm standby and the improvement is enormous. Pricey, both worth it.
