  • Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM Lens

Characterized by a revamped optical design, the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM from Canon is a workhorse wide-angle zoom and member of the well-regarded L-series of lenses. Featuring a series of specialized elements, this lens utilizes a trio of aspherical elements and two ultra-low dispersion glass elements to control a variety of aberrations for high sharpness and clarity. Both SWC and ASC coatings have also been applied to the elements in order to reduce lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy.

Complementing its optical prowess, a ring-type Ultrasonic Motor offers fast, smooth, and near-silent autofocus performance, which is further benefitted by full-time manual focus operation and an internal focusing design. The lens is both water and dust-resistant, and fluorine coatings have also been applied to the front and rear elements to protect against fingerprints and smudges from affecting image quality.

Wide-angle zoom 16-35mm lens is compatible with full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, as well as APS-C-sized models where it will provide a 25.6-56mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance and excellent light transmission throughout the zoom range.
Two large-diameter glass-molded dual-surface aspherical elements and one ground aspherical element help to minimize distortions and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to maintain edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.
Two ultra-low dispersion elements are used to minimize chromatic aberrations as well as eliminate color blurring around the edges of subjects.
Both a Subwavelength Coating (SWC) and an Air Sphere Coating (ASC) have been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing system, high-speed CPU, and optimized AF algorithms, are employed to deliver fast, precise, and near-silent autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front bulbous element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning significantly easier.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

    Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 reviews

EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 101.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing improvement I previously owned the 16-35mm mark II f/2.8 and switched to f/4L is about a year ago. I absolutely love the 16-35mm f/4 other then i needed f/2.8. I bought this lens with very high expectations and it didn't disappoint. It's sharp at f/2.8 all the way to the corners. It's as sharp as f/4 is if not little better. Focusing is also great and very accurate. Corner distortion is also improved from mark ii and almost as good as f/4 is. Only cons is the vignetting at f/2.8. It's almost 4 stops. Adobe doesn't have the profile for this lens yet. I hope it will help this issue ones they have the lens profile in Photoshop.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Improvement Just upgraded from the original 16-35mm I've had since 2006. I really only upgraded because CPS won't service the old one anymore. That being said, I'm much happier with version 3. The lens flare is greatly reduced, and when it does appear, it can actually give a nice effect (not always, but more often than not). It's substantially larger than version 1, and heavier. Not too bad though, and I'm out chasing pro athletes in marathons and triathlons with 2 bodies and 3-4 lenses hanging from me. Definitely worth it for me. Not sure I would have gone up from version 2 though, but I beat my gear up pretty quickly, so the CPS service is really important to me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Sharpest of the 16-35 Series yet. In February I made a trip to Yosemite National Park. I took with me 1DXII, 5Ds, 16-35III, 70-200 2.8 II and 200-400 4 with 1.4 built in. I was there for 5 days and got some of the sharpest images I have ever made using the 16-35 III. I was able to compare it to the 16-35 II that a friend had with us. Both lenses are sharp but the series III is a big difference sharper from edge to edge. I would recommend this lens to any one that uses Canon. Great quality glass and love the new build of the lens. Check out my images from Yosemite.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally! A wide angle L zoom that's up to the job I've owned all 3 iterations of Canon's 16-35 mm f:2.8 L zoom. The first model was okay for its day, and rendered good 'sunstars' in backlit images, but resolution was just adequate for 8 mp sensors and corners tended to go soft with color fringing at most apertures. The second version did improve center resolution both wide open and stopped down, but corner sharpness remained disappointing to me, and that's really the point of a wide angle lens, isn't it? I ended up using the sharper 24-70 f:2.8 II L and stitching frames for wider compositions. At last Canon has hit the mark. Cosmetics of version III are great, it feels a bit lighter and more solid in the hand, and corner sharpness is (finally!) really good. In fact it's great by f:4-5.6, and not that bad wide open. I'm using it on Canon's 5Dsr, and the images can withstand the kind of enlargement 50 megapixels allow.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III I agonized over the purchase of this lense as it costs a significant amount of money. Invest in quality glass they say and that is what I did! I have only had the lens for a couple weeks, but I can tell a marked difference from the kit lens that I used to use. My old lens suffered from chromatic abberation. The 16-35 has fixed that problem for me. I wanted to do some landscape photography and was hitting the limitations of my old lens. The only limitation I have now is my creativity. The build quality is awesome! After I get over the sticker shock, I will never look back on this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ultra Sharp Ultra Wide with a Unique Rendering I've owned this lens for about 2 months and used it to cover 10 days of racing and 6 magazine photoshoots. For the event coverage, I was looking for a lens that could provide me with a truly unique look over my f/4L that I was considering upgrading from. The f/4L had served me well for the past couple years as my ultra-wide zoom, but the lack of 2.8 meant that it kinda struggled in low light at weddings. I rarely used that lens at weddings as a result. So I made the upgrade and couldn't be happier. Best of all, this lens creates a very unique rendering being a 2.8 16mm that's this sharp. It has to be every bit as sharp as my 24-70 f/2.8L Mark II. This lens is fun to work with and I really love it. I'm excited to use this during wedding season.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Improved 16-35mm lens from Canon I have had this lens long enough to say this it definitely improved over the previous version 16-35mm F/2.8L II USM lens. Better contrast, sharpness in the corners. And, handles flare better, i.e. shooting directly into the sun or pinpoint light source. Expensive. Slightly larger than the previous version. But, glad I made the purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GAME CHANGER I have owned every version of this Canon lens and this newest version is an ENTIRELY different animal. I am floored by how well it performs. I used to cringe at the thought of having to shoot a double page spread with the Mk II. I knew that no matter what aperture, the corners of the shot would be mush. Fine when you're shooting an individual portrait and want it to look a little dreamy but absolutely brutal shooting a cover shot or 2x page spread with trees in the upper corners. Don't debate - just buy it. I have never been so happy about a lens purchase.
