Canon 135mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

Rounding out your kit, the Canon TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro Tilt-Shift Lens with Accessories Kit from B&H bundles the medium telephoto tilt-shift lens with 82mm circular polarizer and UV filters as well as a lens cleaning kit.

  • Canon TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro Tilt-Shift Lens

A unique telephoto offering close focus control along with perspective control capabilities the TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro from Canon is a tilt-shift lens well-suited for studio, product, and tabletop photography. Up to +/- 10° of tilt is possible, for focus control, and +/- 12mm of shift, to adjust perspective and composition, and a tilt-locking mechanism can be used while shooting for more stability. A minimum focus distance of 1.6' and a maximum magnification of 0.5x are also benefitted by the range of movements for more control over depth of field when photographing close-up subjects.

Complementing the operation of the lens, this L-series prime is also distinguished by its optical design that features a pair of Ultra-Low Dispersion elements to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity. Individual elements also feature a Subwavelength Coating to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color neutrality.

Perspective control, tilt-shift lens affords +/- 12mm of shift and +/- 10° of tilt, and both types of movements can be applied independently, and parallel or perpendicular to one another. Additionally, the tilt and shift functions can be rotated +/- 90° in any direction for applying the movements in distinct directions.
Tilt-locking mechanism and a large tilt knob benefit operation and ensure the lens stays in place while shooting.
Two Ultra-Low Dispersion (UD) elements help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
A Subwavelength Coating has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting when working in strong lighting conditions.
A minimum focusing distance of 1.6' along with a maximum magnification of 0.5x benefits working with close-up subjects.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field techniques.

  • Luminesque 82mm Circular Polarizer and UV Slim PRO Filter Kit

Combining two of the most useful filters available, Luminesque's 82mm Circular Polarizer and UV Slim PRO Filter Kit is well-suited to all forms of photography. Both filters are constructed from Schott optical glass and feature a 12-layer multi-coating for maintained clarity and image quality. Each filter is also set in an anodized aluminum filter ring, with the UV filter featuring a slim 3.4mm-thick profile to lessen the likelihood of vignetting with wide-angle lenses.

The UV filter is a general use, clear filter that helps to absorb ultraviolet light and reduce the bluish cast of daylight. It is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times in order to reduce dust and moisture from reaching the front lens element and to provide additional protection in case of accidental impacts. Its 12-layer multi-coating also helps to achieve 98.2% light transmission for faithful color reproduction and contrast.

The circular polarizer filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. This results in a noticeable increase in the saturation of skies and foliage, as well as clearer imagery when photographing in hazy conditions. A circular polarizer differs from a linear polarizer in that it supports full use of a camera's autofocus and auto exposure functions.

  • ZEISS Lens Cleaning Kit

This Lens Cleaning Kit from ZEISS is a complete solution for cleaning valuable optics such as camera lenses, eyeglasses, telescopes, or spotting scopes.

Both wet and dry cleaning tools are provided. For blowing dust off an optical surface, the air blaster can be used, while the retractable lipstick-style cleaning brush can dislodge more stubborn dirt or dust particles.

When a thorough wet cleaning is required, a 1 oz bottle of cleaning fluid or ten, individually-wrapped pre-moistened lens wipes are available. Designed for single use, these wipes come in individual, disposable packets. They can be stored in a camera bag, glove compartment, studio, or lens case for whenever they may be needed.

The non-abrasive, 7.1 x 7.1" microfiber cloth can be used after applying fluid or one of the pre-moistened wipes in order to complete the cleaning process and ensure that no streaks or spots remain. It can also be used on its own to effectively remove smudges.

A fabric travel case is also included to hold the contents of the entire kit.

    Canon 135mm f/4.0 reviews

    TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro Tilt-Shift Lens is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best yet from Canon I planned to get all 3 of the new TS-E lenses, but this one wasn't available when my new 50mm and 90mm arrived. Then, initial tests showed the 90mm had to go back (soft on the left), and of course B&H delivered the usual great service on that. The 135mm had arrived in stock in the meantime, and we swapped them. The 135mm came via UPS the next day, featuring—to my surprise—a single-digit serial number. Never had one of those before. I take that to mean B&H has notable clout with Canon. It suggests B&H may be a good place to try while heavily in-demand items remain in short supply. Used on my Canon 5DS R, the lens performance is near flawless. Sharp wide open, all the way to the corners, even with near-maximal shift. There is almost no image quality difference at any aperture up to f/11. If there is a sweet spot, it might be at f/5.6, but even in side-by-side comparisons, any aperture in that range is hard to tell from the others. In the most demanding contrast situations, very slight color fringing is evident, but you have to strain to see it. Far, far less fringing than with the Canon 135mm f/2.0, even when that is used at f/4.0. Sharpness, color, and contrast are all among the best I have seen from any lens, including Zeiss lenses with which I have extensive experience. This new lens is one of the best I have for shooting toward the light, while suppressing veiling and flare. Mechanically, the tilt and shift controls are easy to use, function accurately, and give fine control—except that the lock knob for the shift function is slightly inconveniently located, cramped against the camera body on the 5DS R. Not a big deal for your bare hand, but an issue with gloves on. The one other slight negative I have is that the manual focus ring—which clearly functions perfectly as designed, turns silky smoothly, and is perfectly-damped with no sign of slack—turns just a bit too freely for my taste. And it moves the focus point pretty quickly, so you need sharp visual concentration and fine motor control to optimize focus. The focus rings on the 50mm TS-E, and the new 90mm TS-E feel stiffer and slower, and I would rate them as perfect. I wish this one was more like the others. I am trying make it a practice never to brush against the focus ring when using the tilt and shift controls. Even a light accidental touch may shift the focus slightly. That's a small objection, and I still rate the manual focus very highly for ease of use, and for results. In summary, this is the kind of lens that renews photographic enthusiasm—getting me up and out early, full of anticipation, looking for targets to shoot. Even in someone who has been taking pictures professionally for too many decades, this experience stands out. Unreservedly 5 stars. And by the way, so is the new 50mm TS-E, and so will be the new 90mm TS-E when I get one that carries its full performance all the way to the left of the frame. On the one I sent back, the image quality in the right 85% was every bit as good as the others. These lenses show a striking family resemblance in the superb look of the images they deliver.
