Canon 85mm f/1.2 overview

  • 1Description

Rounding out your kit, the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM Lens with Accessories Kit from B&H bundles the portrait-length prime lens with 72mm circular polarizer and UV filters as well as a lens cleaning kit.

  • Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM Lens

Mixing a short-telephoto focal length with a bright maximum aperture, the EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM is a Canon L-series lens well-suited for portraiture. The impressively fast f/1.2 maximum aperture affords a great degree of control over depth of field for isolating subjects and producing desirable selective focus effects. Complementing these qualities is a sophisticated design that includes one aspherical element to suppress spherical aberrations and notable sharpness and clarity, and a floating optical system is used that maintains image quality throughout the focusing range. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to limit flare and ghosting and promote greater contrast and color accuracy in a variety of lighting conditions. Complementing the imaging attributes, a ring-type USM is employed to deliver quick and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus control.

Short-telephoto, portrait-length prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 136mm equivalent focal length.
Exceptionally bright f/1.2 maximum aperture affords extensive control over depth of field for selective focus applications and also benefits working in low-light situations.
One aspherical element helps to suppress spherical aberrations and distortion for a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.
Floating optical system maintains clarity and sharpness throughout the focusing range.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.

  • Luminesque 72mm Circular Polarizer and UV Slim PRO Filter Kit

Combining two of the most useful filters available, Luminesque's 72mm Circular Polarizer and UV Slim PRO Filter Kit is well-suited to all forms of photography. Both filters are constructed from Schott optical glass and feature a 12-layer multi-coating for maintained clarity and image quality. Each filter is also set in an anodized aluminum filter ring, with the UV filter featuring a slim 3.4mm-thick profile to lessen the likelihood of vignetting with wide-angle lenses.

The UV filter is a general use, clear filter that helps to absorb ultraviolet light and reduce the bluish cast of daylight. It is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times in order to reduce dust and moisture from reaching the front lens element and to provide additional protection in case of accidental impacts. Its 12-layer multi-coating also helps to achieve 98.2% light transmission for faithful color reproduction and contrast.

The circular polarizer filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. This results in a noticeable increase in the saturation of skies and foliage, as well as clearer imagery when photographing in hazy conditions. A circular polarizer differs from a linear polarizer in that it supports full use of a camera's autofocus and auto exposure functions.

    Luminesque PRO
    • Constructed from Schott optical glass for maintained image quality and clarity.
    • A 12-layer multi-coating helps to reduce surface reflections and glare for improved contrast and color neutrality.
    • Anodized aluminum filter rings feature a knurled top edge for easier installation and removal.
    UV Slim Filter
    • Absorbs UV light and reduces bluish cast of daylight for greater image clarity.
    • Clear filter provides no additional coloration or contrast, allowing you to pair this filter with others.
    • Works as general protection filter to reduce dust, moisture, and scratches from reaching the front lens element.
    • 12-layer multi-coating helps to realize a high light transmission rate of 98.2%.
    • Slim filter ring incorporates front threads and measures 3.4mm-thick to lessen the likelihood of vignetting when used on wide-angle lenses.
    Circular Polarizer Filter
    • Reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.
    • Arrange and filter directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light allowing for the absorption of much of the light.
    • Lessens haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
    • Strongest effect when used at a 90° from the sun.

  • ZEISS Lens Cleaning Kit

This Lens Cleaning Kit from ZEISS is a complete solution for cleaning valuable optics such as camera lenses, eyeglasses, telescopes, or spotting scopes.

Both wet and dry cleaning tools are provided. For blowing dust off an optical surface, the air blaster can be used, while the retractable lipstick-style cleaning brush can dislodge more stubborn dirt or dust particles.

When a thorough wet cleaning is required, a 1 oz bottle of cleaning fluid or ten, individually-wrapped pre-moistened lens wipes are available. Designed for single use, these wipes come in individual, disposable packets. They can be stored in a camera bag, glove compartment, studio, or lens case for whenever they may be needed.

The non-abrasive, 7.1 x 7.1" microfiber cloth can be used after applying fluid or one of the pre-moistened wipes in order to complete the cleaning process and ensure that no streaks or spots remain. It can also be used on its own to effectively remove smudges.

A fabric travel case is also included to hold the contents of the entire kit.

Canon 85mm f/1.2 reviews

EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 755.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spectacular images - worth every dollar I've been shooting with L zoom lenses for several years -- primarily wedding work -- and always considered the long end of the 24-70 or the short end of the 70-200 as suitable for portaits (using a full-frame 5D sensor), but nothing prepared me for the superior clarity and gorgeous bokeh of this lens. The lens is heavy, and is slow to focus, as most reviewers note, but this is a small trade-off for the superior performance. The razor-sharp DoF can work against you if you're tempted to shoot 1.2 all the time, but it definitely adds extreme drama when you've focused correctly. This is the best lens you can have for portrait or low-light photography.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my Best "L" lenses I've just finished making a few portrait shots with this lens and I must say, I am amazed by the image quality. The images have a great contrast, sharpness, and beautiful clarity; even at aperture wide open. The background blur (bokeh) is ASTONISHING--it just melts like cream. I was very nervous at first convincing myself about the price. However, the instant I saw the pictures I made with this lens, my worries quickly were put to rest, and great happiness and satisfaction filled my soul! If you are in the market to have "THE" best 85mm lens in the world, and you have the money, don't think twice and purchase this lens. You will be very happy you did.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from very fast but at a cost. I love this lens, the DOF is extremely low as one would expect. I can shoot in near total darkness as long as I have a light for focus assist. Ambient light looks true and beautiful! With that said however this lens is the worst of all I own for backlit subjects. The chromatic aberration is awful, and it is nearly impossible to focus. Keeping in mind manual focus only works to around 4.0 I find myself constantly using auto, which is fast and fine most of the time, but very time consuming and annoying with an even slightly backlit subject. I wouldn't trade this lens for anything, but for variable light situations, I would always carry a backup.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of 3 Canon's best This lens will produce images that no other lens in the world can reproduce. No Leica no Carl Zeiss no Nikkor no one can touch the 85mm f1.2 L II Go for the second version as it is definetely noticeable upgreade in speed and aberation control Shoot it wide open that's how good it is or stop it down to f1.8 and it will blow your socks off Be aware. After purchasing this lens you will be hooked and propably buy the 35mm f1.4L and the 135mm f2L which at that point might cause divorce from spouse :-) P.S.Handle the mounting of this lens on to camera with upmost care as the rear element sticks out and one wrong move or slip and by-by Charlie

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best lenses out there!!! If you want a great portrait lens with a fast aperture and razor sharp images, LOOK NO FURTHER. Although this lens hits your wallet HARD, I would say this is the best lens I own. (this includes 35mm f/1.4L, 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, 400mm f/2.8L, 24-105mm f/4L, etc.) I have used it on my 30D, 5D Mark II and 1D Mark III and it is stellar across the board. And even though I like it the most on my full-frame sensor body, the cropping factor of a 30D, etc. did not bother me. 90% of my favorite images have come from this lens. And, unless you're trying to photograph sports, I don't think the auto-focus is THAT slow. Sure there are faster lenses out there, but it is still the best.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the upgrade I primarily shoot high school seniors on location using natural light. Before purchasing this lens I had been using the canon 85 1.8. I rarely used anything but my 85 so I decided to upgrade to this L lens for the added quality. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. The first thing I noticed about this lens is that is substantially larger than the 1.8. The glass is substantial. In the images, can definitely tell a difference! This lens is sharper and the colors seem to be better. Skin tones look great. It is a fast lens that makes beautiful portraits. I feel great about the upgrade. I'm going to sell my 1.8 now since I won't be needing it anymore.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love Hate relationship This lens is both my least favorite and my favorite lens. Wide open it's difficult to get all of the subject or even just the eyes in focus. If you move at all the focus will go out. You have to use not only autofocus but your own eyes as well to make sure what you want is in focus. It's somewhat slow to focus and a heavy lens. All that being said this lens produces the best bokeh I've ever seen! There's just something magical about this lens! ... but it comes at a price. All and all I use this lens more than any other I own! ( note: slow focus & weight comes at the price of having a lens that opens up to a 1.2 for a full frame! )

Rated 5 out of 5 by from quality of light is amazing Pros: the quality of light that you see through this lens is phenomenal. The rendering is special and no other lens comes close. Amazing in low light. Cons: hard to focus and it's easy to get blurry images if you're not careful This is a portrait lens but I've used it for my kid's concerts indoors and for sports where it does a tremendous job of isolating the subject and really bringing attention. Mostly use this for modeling shots/fashion where it just shines. Also own the 100m f/2.8, 24-105L, 70-200mm, 50 f/1.8, and this is my favorite lens because it makes my pictures look so special and beautiful.
