Oyen Digital Novus Overview

Transform your hard-disk drive into an external storage solution with the Novus USB Type-C Rugged 3.5" HDD Enclosure from Oyen Digital. Featuring a vented aluminum housing and protective silicon sleeve, this housing acts as an integrated cooling solution and protects your drive from minor drops and impacts.

The internal SATA III interface and ASMedia ASM235CM chipset provide support for your installed drive, ensuring data is properly saved. The USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port transfers data up to 10 Gb/s and supports Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. You can use the Novus on Windows, Mac, and Linux-based systems.

Doubling the speed of its predecessor, USB 3.1 Gen 2 features a maximum throughput of 10 Gb/s when used with compatible devices.

Inherent flaw in Oyen enclosure

While the Oyen Digital enclosure is a nice build and besides the fact that it is over-priced, it has a USC-C flaw -- when attempting to transfer (copy) files from one Oyen Digital to another, for example to make a safety backup, the speed will drop dramatically. You will get a Force Eject dialogue. And, when disk First Aid is run under Mac's Disk Utilities it will not run but rather show errors. In numerous exchanges with Oyen Digital support, the only solution is to not use USB-C but rather USC-A. Think about that... you are being asked to take a step backward in technology. Buyer beware!

I started out by installing a 6TB WD HDD in one of these enclosures for backup of a large photo library. I now am using three for digital photos and a fourth for Apple's Time Machine. Highest praise.

- Inner tray is plastic, but precision made for easy installation. - Supports both 2.5 & 3.5 HDD & SSD drives. - USB C is 3.2 (10Gbps) despite product photo showing USB 3.1 - So far no issues w/ 2A power supply.

Whisper Quiet with Something to be Desired

I bought two of these Oyen Novus Enclosures for Carbon Copy Cloner backups per Bombich Software's recommendation. I use them with WD's 16TB Ultrastar drives inside. These are the quietest 7200 rpm HDD enclosures I've ever used, probably because the trays inside are plastic instead of metal. The plastic trays - along with the silicon sleeve on the outside - likely have dampened some of that HDD vibration, whereas metal trays in enclosures like the OWC Mercury Elite Pro will amplify the noise. The main enclosure of the Oyen Novus is still metal. I don't know how much difference a little plastic will make to the temperature of the HDDs when you use it in hot weather, but I've not experienced any thermal problems. Time will tell. One quirk for me is the electronics of the Novus. It will continue to make the HDD spin after you shut down your mac computer. At that point, I don't know if I can just turn off the switch/unplug the power adapter or if I have to wait for the HDD to gracefully spin down. If you eject the Oyen Novus in Finder, the enclosure will make the hard drive spin down, but there is still a hissing sound somehow. Then, when you power down the mac, the HDD will spin up again, which is strange. I use a LaCie 1Big Dock for Time Machine backup and the LaCie will completely shut down once you turn off your computer, signifying it's safe to unplug its power adapter. Graceful shut-downs are key to preventing data corruption and loss, so I'm a bit nervous when the Novus keeps on spinning when I'm about to unplug the power. The Novus' power adapter also does not inspire confidence. While it does have a UL certification, it looks and feels cheap. In comparison, LaCie's and OWC's adapters seem better made with more certifications from multiple countries.

I got this to house my 8TB backup drive. It was simple to get into the unit and install. A few screws, put the silicone housing on it for protection and you're done. Very easy and a good price. Feels very stable and solid.

I have four of these and they work flawlessly! When DROBO decided to not support the new Mac OS, I used these to quickly and cheaply back up many terabytes of data. Minor assembly required, but it even comes with a small screwdriver. 3 minute operation to insert the drive and secure it. I think they are very quiet compared to many drives.

Company fails to explain flaw

I bought three of these enclosures and found them to be practical and useful... until recently. After long and exhaustive investigation online and with Apple Care, we have discovered that the enclosures cause a HDD error when formatting to APFS. As a result, performance craters and multiple errors appear. The company is absolutely NO help. The section of their website for written support is broken, and they do not return phone calls.

I bought a 16TB hard drive to put in this. Extremely easy, basically slides right in and the cover goes back on. Very well made.

The Oyen Digital Novus USB Type-C Rugged 3.5" HDD Enclosure would not be suitable for an SSD, as it is designed specifically for 3.5" drives which require a power supply. If you are looking for a 2.5" SSD enclosure, you could consider BH #TRS0GSJ25CK3.
