Ilford Prestige Metallic Gloss Reviews

Outstanding colors and sharpness

I obtained superior results with this paper. My prints were exceptionally sharp and had brilliant color rendering. The other single review which is negative I have no explanation for. I used this paper with an Epson 3880 printer and the Ilford supplied custom color profile for my printer and paper. The profile was IGPMG_PGPPN.icc. Attached are two small photos of prints on this paper taken with a Sony RX100. Lighting was the LED floodlamps in my kitchen and the camera was set to auto. Only editing was for vertical perspective and cropping.

Really bad

I have the whole line of ILFORD inkjet papers: glossy, luster, silk smooth, all art canvases, etc and they are all fantastic, This Metallic version is really really bad. Depth of color cannot be achieved and therefore there is no way that even custom profiles would help. I also printed on Kodak Metallic and it looked amazing compared to ILFORD. Don't get me wrong ILFORD is great, but stay away from Metallic. See the attached photo. Big print on the left is Kodak and framed print is ILFORD silk - they have great density and look exactly like my screen. Two washed out ones are ILFORD Metallic on two different printers. No good!

question

Is this new paper the replacement of the now discontinued smooth super high gloss ? Does it have same characteristics or is it entirely new ?
Asked by: Luis M.
Glossy inkjet is a type of paper that shines by nature. When light falls on such paper it is either reflected parallelly or at an angle. With metallic paper a sheet of mylar is kept between the printing paper and the emulsion. So there's no real comparison. Metallic is far superior for a 3D look. That being said Gloss doesn't change the image effect as does metallic and the colors can be a bit more accurate.
