Venus Optics Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe (Cine-Mod ... Overview

By B&H Photo's

Described as "weird but genius," the Canon EF-mount Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe Lens from Venus Optics is a truly unique lens designed for close-up shooting. Distinguished by its long and slender lens barrel, this macro lens provides a 2:1 maximum magnification with a 1.5' minimum focusing distance and a close 0.8" minimum working distance. Even with such a close working distance, the lens measures 1.3' long, placing you at a comfortable distance to photograph nearby subjects. Also, as a wide-angle lens, greater depth of field is afforded when compared to traditional telephoto macro lenses, allowing for greater detail in the background with less subject isolation.

The optical design includes both extra-low dispersion and extra-refractive index elements, which help to suppress chromatic and spherical aberrations for a high degree of clarity, color accuracy, and sharpness. Manual focus control permits focusing from 1.5' to infinity, and the front of the lens has a built-in LED ring light to aid in focusing at close distances. The slim 0.2" diameter of the front of the lens barrel also offers greater opportunities for lighting subjects from the front. Additionally, the front portion of the lens is waterproof and permits working with subjects just beneath the surface of the water or in dusty or trying environments.

This "cine-mod" version of the lens has been optimized for video use and features integrated gears on both the aperture and focus rings for doing iris and focus pulls using a follow focus.

Unique macro lens design offers a greater-than-life-sized 2:1 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 1.5' and a working distance of just 0.8".
The long tubular lens barrel contributes to producing a distinct bug-eye perspective and, despite the short working distance, the length of the lens barrel places the camera at a comfortable shooting distance.
Wide-angle 24mm focal length affords greater depth of field and more surrounding detail than traditional telephoto macro designs, which tend to isolate subject matter with shallow depth of field.
Optical design includes two extra-low dispersion elements that control color fringing and chromatic aberrations to produce greater clarity and color accuracy. One extra refractive index element is also featured, which reduces spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
Slim 0.8" front diameter allows performing unique "slide-in" shots as well as affords a greater range of close-up, inconspicuous shooting opportunities. The smaller front diameter also makes it easier to illuminate close-up subjects from the front.
The front of the lens is waterproof, allowing you to comfortably work just under the water surface or in dusty environments.
The front of the lens has a built-in LED ring light which is powered via a micro-USB port on the barrel, providing some illumination on close-up subjects for easier focusing.
Designed for use as a close-up macro lens, the manual focus operation also lets you focus at infinity.
This "cine-mod" version of the lens has built-in focus and aperture gears to aid in doing focus and iris pulls.
Seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Some reviewer reported about yellowish LED light. How bad is it?
Asked by: Sri Mulyono
My whole lens leans yellow anyways, the light seems mostly daylight balanced. I try to stay away from front light in my photography and cinematography so I tend to avoid using it. Also in specular reflections you can very clearly see the 8 individual diodes that compose the ring light. This lens is incredible for what it is capable of, but it does have it’s limitations.

Can someone list every single difference between the cine-mod and regular versions of this lens?
Asked by: Robin
Cine lenses will have built in gear on the focus ring for focus pulling. That's why it's called the Cine-Mod Version. The original version does not have the built in gear around the focus ring.

Can anyone recommend a good follow focus that fits this small diameter lens? Most of them do not, it would seem. Has anyone tested it with a particular model? Thanks.
Asked by: Michael
This lens has a standard 0.8mm gear and should work with most follow focus units. If you wanted something with a low profile you could check out the Kamerar FF-3 Follow Focus, B&H # KAKFF3, you will just need a 15mm rod system to mount the follow focus too. https://bhpho.to/2CcGHMa

Are the cine gears on this model worth the extra price? It seems most of the time for video this lens would be used at a fixed focal point, as the camera moves on something like a slider.
Asked by: Pedro
That depends on how you plan to use the lens. If your goal is to use this lens to film subjects that do not move or without moving the camera then you can use the photography version. However, if you plan to use a follow focus, or a slider, or any other camera motion gear it is much better to use the cine version of the lens. The built in gear ring are designed for use with a follow focus enabling more precise control when pulling focus to accommodate any kind of movement. FYI if you purchase the photography version of this lens you can add a focus gear ring yourself but it will not be as robust as having it built into the lens.

Anyone experience performance issues when using adapters with this lens? Looking to use this in conjunction with the Sigma MC-11 EF to E adapter.
Asked by: Taylor
The Venus Optics Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe Lens for Canon EF (Cine-Mod Version) (B&H# VE2414CC) does not communicate electronically with the camera for focus or aperture control and thus could also work with many Sony E mount-equipped cameras if and only if it is used with an appropriate adapter. If an adapter that is appropriate for your camera is used then there should not be any impediment to performance.
