Cokin 164 overview

  • 1Description

This is the P164 Circular Polarizer Glass Filter from Cokin. It fits in the optional Cokin P Holder. Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. A polarizer helps make a blue sky bluer as well as making clouds stand out. It can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun.

Note: Circular polarizers are specifically designed for use with auto-focus SLR cameras (They will also work on manual systems without problems)

    Cokin 164 reviews

P164 Circular Polarizer Glass Filter is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 61.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from does its job, and does it well I bought this polarizer as part of my Cokin system. I already had a Hoya circular polarizer, but it made sense to get something to go with the Cokin system. The advantage of this is that the polarizer is easy to clean (the Hoya and other like it always get a little fogged up inside, in-between the two rotatable filters, and since the two filters cannot be disassembled the gunk cannot be cleaned). A little difficult to insert and a little stiff to rotate, that's why gave it 4 stars. Overall, I love it and would recommend it to those who already use the Cokin system.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Product photogrphy One of the compromises of using any filter is that it might negatively effect image quality. I found this to be especially true with my general brand circular polarizer. That was completely unacceptable when shooting artwork and furniture. I've been using this Cokin filter for a few weeks now and can say that it preforms very well. My images are sharp with no distortions. I have to admit though, that my older double glass filter did a marginally better job at removing reflections. I gladly accept the trade-off. When using it, you have to turn the filter holder clockwise to reach the desired effect or you'll end up unscrewing it from the lens. Solid 4 stars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wish I knew about this sooner. I wish that I had known about the possibility of Cokin filters before I started buying polarizing and ND filters for every lens. It works just like my screw in filters and I only have to have one and an adapter ring for each lens. I have only had the opportunity to use it once, but it provided the same results as my other polarizing filters. I did read the review that it was hard to turn, and I did find it a little stiff, but I just rotated the holder which is much easier and worked fine. I only gave it 4 stars because I haven't had the chance to use it but one time. The images I took with it turned out great with no reflection in the water.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great, but . . . I read that the p-size might vignette at the widest angle, so I was pleased after testing a holder on my 18-200mm lense that I did not have that issue even at the widest angle. Unfortunately, my pre-purchase test did not involve a circular filter, so i was a little disappointed to see the filter's edges in my pictures. This is still only an issue on the circular filters, whereas the square ones are fine. Overall, I am happy with my purchase and would buy it again. I was worried about quality given there are much more expensive options, but a professional photographer friend recommended the Cokin and it works just fine. A little fussy to get out of the holder.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's a good concept, but... This is the second time that I've purchased this item. The first one broke when it slipped out of the holder. I know that I've seen this issue mentioned previously. Not the fault of the filter, but of the holder design. I have both the wide-angle and standard P units. The wide-angle version just doesn't have a reliable catch to keep the unit in place and should be used with extreme care, if at all. Which leads to the second area where the product falls short. When I owned the first one, my widest-angle option was 18mm on an APSC sensor (28mm equivalent), and that worked fine as long as the wide-angle adapter was used. Now, I have 16mm available (24mm equivalent), and no matter what I do, there's significant vignetting at the corners of the images at the wide end. So, at least in the case of the polarizer, the Cokin promise of one filter for all lenses just doesn't work with anything wider than a 28mm (if using full frame sensors). Now I have a rather expensive filter that I can use with two of my lenses, but will have to purchase an even more expensive, low profile, single-purpose polarizer for my current WA and any others that I might purchase in the future. It's heavy, well-constructed and does the optical job that it's designed to do... as long as you don't exceed its build-in limitations. I would recommend the product as long as the individual understands the qualifiers stated above. It's not quite the solution that it's marketed as.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have for nature photography After getting new equipment I have always had the circular polarizer on my list but never really got around to it until now... For any one doing nature photography it is a must have. If used right you will see the improved sky and clouds standing out better as indicated by the product photo. However you will also get better photos of a view of tress since the polarizer will remove the reflection on leaves and create a better result. It is not an item that is permanently mounted on the camera. But when heading to the mountains it is an item you must not forget.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Polarizer If you are familiar with the Cokin system, then you will not have any problem using the polarizer. The first go at putting it in is a little tricky, as it does need to mount in the back of the holder only. But, once you see the results, especailly with the warming filter added to your shots, you wonder why you did not get this to start off with. Much better than the previous polarizer that I had. A must have for any camera bag!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Filters I have used Cokin filters for a LONG time! The purchase of a new camera forced me to change over to the P series filter system. When I was looking for a polarizer for my new camera I decided to stay with Cokin. The polarizer has been a great addition to my new camera. I have already put it to use at an exotic car show and in water sports. As usual for Cokin, it does an excellent job and I am pleased with it.
