QNAP TVS-472XT External HDD/SSD Overview

Powered by an Intel 8th Generation processor, the TVS-472XT 4-Bay NAS Enclosure from QNAP features both 10 Gigabit Ethernet and Thunderbolt 3 high bandwidth connectivity for tackling heavy workloads and smoothly transferring, displaying, and editing 4K videos in real time. With M.2 SSD support and the ability to install a graphics card, the TVS-472XT provides the ability to boost performance and create a scalable working environment for collaboration and high-speed file sharing. The TVS-472XT is driven by hardware that delivers performance, comprehensive multimedia features, expandable storage capacity, and numerous other NAS functionalities.

The TVS-472XT is powered by a 3.1 GHz Intel Pentium G5400T Dual-Core processor and 4GB of DDR4 RAM, which can be upgraded to 64GB, using one 32GB module in each of the SO-DIMM slots. Network connectivity is achieved using the two Gigabit Ethernet ports and one 10 Gigabit Ethernet port, the latter of which helps to further enhance on-the-fly video editing and rapid file sharing. This NAS also supports JBOD, Single, and a variety of RAID modes, including RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10, each of which offer data redundancy, speed, or a combination of both.

This 4-bay enclosure has the ability to natively house both 3.5" and 2.5" SATA III hard drives or SSD drives. The TVS-472XT can reach a throughput of up to 1087 MB/s via Thunderbolt 3, 1158 MB/s using 10 Gigabit Ethernet, and 1050 MB/s using 10 Gigabit Ethernet with encryption. Using the two 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 ports, two 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C ports, two 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A ports, one 5 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A port, and one HDMI 2.0 port, this QNAP NAS can be connected to other QNAP devices, as well as other external drives and displays up to 3840 x 2160 at 60 Hz. Great NAS, When it Works

By Robert

Date: 2021-02-26

I Have had this NAS about a year and a half. I have it replaced by QNAP once. I am Mac based and bought this NAS because of Thunderbolt 3. The Thunderbolt 3 connection is great when it works. QNAP support is good. But I am not a power user and I should have had as many problems with this NAS as I have had. My recommendation is if you buy this NAS. Do yourself a favor and purchase the longest extended warranty and rapid replacement support you can get from QNAP. It is expensive. But worth it in the long run.

Kid proof too

Overall good quality NAS for my family and photographic needs. User interface leaves much to be desired but after initial setup I rarely use the apps directly. Kid shoved it off a shelf 3 feet onto a hardwood floor and it powered off instantly. HDD’s weren’t showing up after powering back on, but removed them, checked for issues and everything seemed solid, no rattling parts. Reassembled and back online. Can only commend on construction after seeing the results of what it did to my floor without breaking on its own.

Can't get 472XT to use Wi-Fi on Windows

I am having a terrible time trying to get this NAS device to use the WiFi port on my Windows 10 laptop. I can connect to the PC via TB3 and ethernet, but I can't figure out why I can not get this NAS to use WiFi. Plus it keeps defaulting to a 169.254 network, which is driving me crazy! :^(

Great unit but issues

I just bought one of these and initially it was working great, with a little bit of a learning curve. But then within 3 weeks the NAS started betting forever. It never stopped. The good thing about it all is QNAP support is GREAT.. Each time I called I got a real person and they are now sending me out a new unit...

Major security issues that have not been addressed by QNAP.

QNAP has major security issues and have had 3 deadbolt attacks. Essentially a hacker locks all of your files and holds them for ransom. QNAP has not properly patched the security issue and their support was not helpful at all. Do not buy unless you have a separate backup that is not connected to a QNAP device.

Fantastic NAS!

Note: This is the XT version! (more powerful CPU). I'm running RAID 0 (with external backup) and NVME SSD for cache acceleration. Upgrading from a TS-470 pro, I didn't realize how much of a difference this would be. Even though I am not using the 10GBe (yet), the snappiness of this over the previous is noticeable. It feels more 'even' and fluid in any transaction from logging on to File Station functions to other Ntwk functions. I haven't used any additional apps as of yet, so I can't attest to the versatility, but for now, I am very happy with the this NAS! Quiet and powerful.
