Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 Overview

More than just the lens, the Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 ASPH. Lens with Lens Care Kit from B&H bundles the normal prime with a lens cleaning kit.

Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 ASPH. Lens

A fast, normal prime designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, the Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 ASPH. from Panasonic is a 50mm equivalent lens featuring a bright f/1.7 maximum aperture for enhanced low-light shooting and depth of field control. One UHR (Ultra-High Refractive Index) element pairs with two aspherical elements to reduce spherical aberrations and distortions for consistent edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination. A Nano Surface Coating has been applied, too, and helps to reduce flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity. The optical construction also helps to realize a compact overall form factor, measuring just 2"-long and weighing 4.4 oz. Benefitting both stills and video capture, this lens also incorporates a stepping motor for smooth, quiet autofocus performance that is compatible with Lumix cameras' high-speed contrast-detection focusing systems.

Designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, this lens provides a 50mm equivalent focal length to represent a normal perspective.
Fast f/1.7 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also enables extensive control over focus placement for selective focus applications.
One UHR element and a pair of aspherical elements help to achieve even illumination and sharpness for consistent performance throughout the aperture range.
A Nano Surface Coating has been applied to individual elements to noticeably reduce lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Stepping motor delivers fast, smooth, and near-silent autofocus performance to benefit both still photograph and movie recording applications.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm produces a smooth out-of-focus quality when working with shallow depth of field techniques.

ZEISS Lens Cleaning Kit

This Lens Cleaning Kit from ZEISS is a complete solution for cleaning valuable optics such as camera lenses, eyeglasses, telescopes, or spotting scopes.

Both wet and dry cleaning tools are provided. For blowing dust off an optical surface, the air blaster can be used, while the retractable lipstick-style cleaning brush can dislodge more stubborn dirt or dust particles.

When a thorough wet cleaning is required, a 1 oz bottle of cleaning fluid or ten, individually-wrapped pre-moistened lens wipes are available. Designed for single use, these wipes come in individual, disposable packets. They can be stored in a camera bag, glove compartment, studio, or lens case for whenever they may be needed.

The non-abrasive, 7.1 x 7.1" microfiber cloth can be used after applying fluid or one of the pre-moistened wipes in order to complete the cleaning process and ensure that no streaks or spots remain. It can also be used on its own to effectively remove smudges.

A fabric travel case is also included to hold the contents of the entire kit.

How much better in low light is this than the ...

How much better in low light is this than the Panasonic 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 in terms of what ISO the camera needs to be set to get the same results?
Asked by: MASAITIS
The 25mm f1.7 will allow you to substantially reduce the ISO needed for a proper exposure. This will be an estimate as I don’t know exactly what the maximum aperture of the 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 is at 25mm (and you are giving up the flexibility fo the zoom), but it should be approximately f4.5. Increasing the aperture at 25mm from 4.5 to 1.7 is a gain of approximately 3 stops. So what needed ISO 3200 on the zoom will require only ISO 400 on the prime. Or reducing an ISO 800 shot to only ISO 100 (although most m4/3 cameras only go down to 200 or 160 as their native or lowest ISO so you could increase your shutter speed too!). Just looking at shutter speed increases, if you needed 1/50th of a second on the zoom, you can shoot at 1/400th second with the 25mm f1.7. Hope this helps.

Will the focus-by-wire in this lens be a problem ...

Will the focus-by-wire in this lens be a problem when trying to do a smooth focus pull?
Asked by: Yossi
The main issue with quality focus by wire lenses is not whether it is smooth but the fact it is difficult to set marks since the scale is clutched. Your pulls will be smooth, but setting marks will not be.
