Genaray SSL-50 Overview

  • 1Description

Offering a soft wrap-around quality thanks to its long, narrow form factor and 400 bright LEDs, the 50" long Soft Strip LED Light from Genaray is a versatile fixture with features that are easy to use in the studio or on location. The light has color temperature that's a solid, daylight-balanced 5600K with a high CRI/TLCI rating of 96/98.3, an indicator of precise color rendering. The SSL-50 features an all-digital dimmer with enhanced resolution; giving you single digit adjustment control throughout the dimming range from 100% all the way down to 1%. Other dimmers without this functionality can exhibit abrupt falloff below 10% greatly limiting their dynamic range.

The SSL-50 runs barely warm to the touch, allowing you to work close to the subject without causing discomfort or hot light hazards. The power-saving light produces an output of 1693.6 lux at 3' while consuming just 80W of power, helping you keep the temperature of your set and your operational costs down.

The long, narrow fixture can be used vertically or horizontally. In vertical orientation, the SSL-50 is ideal for use as a sidelight or for dramatic lighting. It also creates long, elegant reflections when shooting products. In horizontal mode, the light has a wrap-around quality with appealing falloff at the top and bottom of the frame. Another use is overhead as a hair light.

The SSL-50 has a beam angle coverage of 75 degrees, which can be modified and controlled by its two-way barndoors. The fixture comes with a multi-voltage adapter that makes it ready for world use, but it can also run on optional V-mount batteries when AC power is unavailable. A case is included to store and transport the light.

Horizontal or Vertical Orientation
The long, thin form factor gives a wrap-around quality when used horizontally. Used vertically, it's well-suited for a sidelight or for lighting objects and casting a long, elegant reflection.
2-Way Barndoors
This simple but effective modifier allows you to swing one or more leaves into the light's beam for selective lighting of your subject.
Lollipop Mount
The mount incorporates a ball head attachment with ratchet handle that provides precise fine-tuning and adjustment of the light's position. Using it gives you the option to quickly change the light's orientation from horizontal to vertical or to any position within the ball head's 360° adjustable range.
AC or Optional Battery Power
The SSL-50 ships with a multi-voltage 100-240 VAC power supply but it can also run on V-mount batteries when mains power is unavailable.
Even Illumination
The SSL-50 provides even illumination along its 50"-inch length, without noticeable hot spots. When shooting full-length portraits or group shots, this fixture bathes your subjects in soft and diffuse wraparound light without multiple shadows.
Cool Running
The SSL-50 runs barely warm to the touch allowing you to work close to your subject without discomfort and without losing time waiting for the fixture to cool down.
The SSL-50 features an all-digital dimmer with enhanced resolution; giving you single digit adjustment control throughout the dimming range from 100% all the way down to 1%. Other dimmers without this functionality can exhibit abrupt falloff below 10% greatly limiting their dynamic range.
Quiet Operation
The light's fanless convection cooling is a valuable asset in sound-sensitive environments.

    Genaray SSL-50 Reviews

SSL-50 Soft Strip LED Light is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely incredible, precise and improved!! (SSL-36) Before I even start with the light itself, let me stop right here and start with the CASE alone this unit comes with! Genaray is awesome for always including a case for everything they make. To me, this is a HUGE plus as it eliminates the hassle of spending hours on the internet looking for a fit plus the extra cost that it will imply. Many LEDs from other brands, even some costing over $1,000 don't come with a case and that is frustrating. Speaking of price? The SSL-50 costs less than $400, and comes with that kind of Case?? The Genaray SSL-36 comes already with a very nice bag which fits everything that comes with the light, but the SSL-50 comes with a BEAUTIFUL Riffle style semi hard CASE (not a regular zipped bag) that features pockets, Velcros, foams, you name it. You can even use the SSL-50 case for other things besides the SSL-50 contents itself. Everything inside that case comes isolated. Each item in its dedicated slots, which to me is important. I like keeping my gear as new as factory and this case satisfy my picky needs. Another improvement over the SSL-36 is the Ballast. It now has the same look as the Genaray Radiance AK-230's Ballast, with a beautiful highlighted blue Touch Screen display. I love things with displays. It just adds functionality and beauty. Lollipop Mount: Looking at the product's picture, it looked a little thin but when I unboxed it and held the mount in my hand, I felt the solid weight and the metal thickness which gave me instant full confidence to mounting this light on a lightstand and forget about it. The lollipop's Rachet knob is also rock solid and it doesn't take any effort whatsoever to lock it down. One nice turn and the light fixture wont go anywhere. The lollipop mount also allows you to aim this light at any angle you can think of, and even more options when using the lightstand's knobs to turn it around. I'm glad that they made a 50 version and if they made an 80 version, I'd take it in a heartbeat, because there are lots of situations when shooting on large sets, instead of your 10' X 15' little Youtube bedroom room space, on serious Sets, you DO need massive and multiple fixtures and Genaray knows that cinematographers need such sizes. Speaking of massive, It is a heavy unit, but not quite so heavy, I can easily lift it with my pinky (on purpose) and I'm not a big guy. But if you plan to mount this fixture on a cheap stand, think again! Impact has many affordable C-stands and heavy duty stands if you don't have a decent stand. Don't risk accidents. There are many other ways to save money, and this is NOT one of them. Materials: This whole fixture (both the SSL-36 and SSL-50) is made of Aluminium, including the barn doors, except the diffuser white panel and the barn door hinges. The hinges are made of ABS plastic, which I PREFER plastic, because it eliminates wear and tear and squeaks. The plastic material also adds more resistance and friction when opening and closing the barn doors. It feels nice and rigid in the hands. If the barn door hinges ever came loose, it features a standard Phillips head so you can GENTLY tighten if ever needed. Metal hinges also comes loose. SSL-50 uses: Great for main key light for tight spaces or quick setups, illuminating backdrops including Green Screens (you will need at least two identical of these lights,). Also great when shooting portraits and fashion. The 50 will easily cover the Model's body from head to toe, and the closer the light is, the softer the light it produces. And the built-in barn door is very efficient in blocking light spills and camera lens flares eliminating additional setup of flags, which is extremely critical especially for Green Screen work if you want to key that out easily. Accuracy: I don't have any color meter or CRI device, but what I really care, regardless what the paper says is...It looks great, skin tones are gorgeous and plenty bright to shoot anything indoors and the color output matches perfectly with my Genaray Powerhouse and Radiance LED lights and other reputable light brands I also own and use. Most instances, set at 35% power is plenty, I could get the Video shot I wanted with the Subject 5' away from the light at 50% ISO 100, shutter 60 and f2.8 using a Canon 1DX Mark II. You can achieve great results even with a dark 24-105 Canon L at F4, with low ISO 640. Outdoors, the SSL-50 works decent as long as you can get it close at FULL BLAST. At sunset, not a problem at all and you can add gel strips too as DIY on the panel. V-Mount Option: Battery life - I'm using the recommended Watson Pro Cine High-Load V-Mount Battery model VM-148-HCS-R that I already own. It's always a good idea to get the battery that the manufacturer recommends, as it was probably the one they tested in the factory... I left it run on V-mount for several hours at 45% on one battery and have yet to have one die on me. I can't say how long they last to dead status but its been enough for me so far. Check this out... On V-mount, if you want to go all out, if you have an assistant that knows what he/she is doing for this task of scenario to carry the ballast for you on the move, you can actually shoot the subject in MOTION in a corridor or outdoors while following it with THIS light in MOTION, along with the Boom operator, camera and all. You have seen these type of scenarios on BTS movies. I tried that in my backyard just for fun with my neighbors as the actors before doing anything serious and the results were as cool as I predicted while the camera was on a Gimbal for stability. Cons: 1 I wish Genaray included with these units, a CTO Panel for Tungsten lighting. Most situations, with the exception of outdoors or near a window with daylight shining from, I shoot on Tungsten to match existing tungsten lighting usually found in most homes, hotels, etc for interviews and movie sets. If i used it at 5600 K, it wouldn't work for my scenarios, unless I wanted to purposely add depth by having mixed lighting colors (foreground vs background) as commonly seen in movie production. But most cases, I need tungsten. Designing the optional accessory CTO panel: This panel should also include a pair of adhesive MAGNETS to attach on each extreme of the SSL'50, which allows a clean and quick install and removal, instead of using Velcros and a 3.5 x 50 CTO Rosco Gel, which is what I'm temporarily using to take care of the Tungsten need. And I DO like the fact that this light is NOT a Bi-Color, as it would LOSE light intensity due to the split of LEDs, 200 daylight and 200 Tungsten. (The SSL-50 has 400 5600 K LEDs) I'm very impressed with this light and I wish I had multiple SSL's for the awesome triangle or hexagon setup and the ultra cool catch light on eyes. I've been doing Cinematography full time for over 20 years and I also have every kind of lighting modifiers you can think of, and the SSL-50 is a winner in my book and inventory arsenal and great replacement for softboxes when space is a premium. VERY often, when I have jobs on location, most likely, I'm gonna deal with tight spaces, like... someone's living room for interviews in a small home, bedrooms etc. and this light features 1% brightness for precision when low brightness is required, and not the 5 - 10% jumps especially when the light is close to the subject in tight spaces. [I have received this light in exchange for my honest review]
