Sony PCM-A10 Reviews

very impressed

I have a zoom h4n, h1n, and a sounddevices 702 recorder with various stereo mics - but wanted something smaller. I tested this against the two others with 96/24. The h4n was a tiny bit better with the low-end frequencies, there is nothing that will replace the sounddevices and a real mic - but the sound is definitely more natural, clean, and dynamic than the h1n. While traveling I end up taking this one everywhere because the recordings are nice and it is so portable and sturdy. It turns on very quickly and I like the naming system for files. You can't use the app to monitor the sound, only to start/stop and see levels.

I use this for my camera stereo recording setup. I don't like mono (boring) sound. this is, to me, the best there is in the market to deliver excellent stereo sound for camera in a small package that can be easily mounted on my camera.

Tiny Yet Effective

I thought my old Sony M10 was small until my A10 arrived. This thing is tiny, but the Bluetooth connections for phone control during recording and wireless playback afterwards are really worthwhile. The purchase was definitely worth the cost!

I purchased this for an upcoming trip to the Philippines. I plan to use it for field recording in the jungle. In the interim, I have used it to record myself playing on a very nice piano in a very nice space. The recordings are amazing...frequency spectrum and stereo separation are outstanding. Can't wait to get this in the jungle!!

the dealbreaker seems to be that the only way to record is on battery. Once you plug in the USB, it starts charging and you can't keep the USB connector plugged in and use the unit at the same time to do extended recording. There's no AC power connector and once the USB connects, it charges only and you can't turn the unit on and use it while the USB is plugged in. I looked at the manual online and it says you can do it with an adapter on PAGE189 of the manual, but, Sony doesn't make an accessory USB/AC adapter and there's no switch in the software to change the USB connector like it does have a software adjustment to change the input jack from mic impedance to auxilary line input like for taping off a radio, etc. Would really appreciate it if anyone can explain this. I called Sony and Sony support is useless. The customer service number told me to call Sony professional support and nobody from Sony answers the question. Makes me really question why I'd want to deal with Sony, also. Olympus at least responds to consumer questions. Although, everything else about the unit is great. I'm just really turned off by this problem and by Sony for the way they respond. Please tell me I missed something and you can plug in the USB connector and turn on the unit and use it while the USB is plugged in. Thanks???

You can use the same type of USB AC adapter with the recorder as you would for your phone, such as Apple's 5W USB Power Adapter (B&H # APMD810LLA). Instead of connecting the USB cable to your computer's USB port, you would plug it into the USB AC adapter and then plug the adapter into a wall outlet.

Will the mic input work with stereo mic?
Asked by: Jeffrey
The Sony PCM-A10 is compatible with stereo microphones that use a TRS connection. If the mic in question uses any other type of connection, such as TRRS for example, it will not be compatible.

Asked by: SANGHOON
No, live monitoring can not be done via Bluetooth, only playback. The recording audio is output to the headphone jack, so you would need a wired connection to monitor.

Does Bluetooth also work while recording? I mean if I'm recording music, and want to listen to Bluetooth headphones while recording, will it work? Or the intention only after the sound file is closed?
Asked by: yehuda
No, the Bluetooth feature cannot be used while recording. It is only available for use during playback to connect wireless headphones or speakers. When recording, it is always best to use wired headphones since there can be some latency with Bluetooth.
