Panasonic Lumix G9 Mirrorless Camera

Panasonic has taken a different approach to camera development with the stills-focused Lumix G9 Mirrorless Camera, which has a variety of newly developed functions and features that will appeal to photographers. Central to the imaging process is the combination of a 20.3MP Live MOS sensor and the latest Venus Engine processor, enabling the capture of sharp images and video with sensitivities ranging up to ISO 25600. Extremely fast speeds are also made available with up to 60 fps continuous shooting with the electronic shutter function. If you want to shoot video along with stills the G9 is very accommodating, offering UHD 4K at up to 60p.

This improved speed is seen in many different aspects, including an enhanced Depth-from-Defocus autofocus system with 225 areas for fast, precise focusing across the frame. A rear joystick has been implemented as well for intuitive control over the current focus point. Another benefit of boosted processing is the inclusion of 6K PHOTO at 30 fps and 4K PHOTO at up to 60 fps, allowing users to capture 18MP or 8MP images, respectively, at exceptional frame rates. Beyond speed, the 5-axis sensor stabilization system supports Dual I.S. 2.0 and can compensate for up to six stops of camera shake. And a significant addition made possible with this new system is a multi-shot mode that captures eight separate images and compiles them into a single 80MP raw image.

It isn't just performance that has been optimized, as the G9 has a redesigned body that is splash, dust, and freezeproof. The body gains a top status LCD for quick access to essential settings without needing to check the LCD or viewfinder, which have also been improved. Most notably, the OLED viewfinder is improved with a 0.83x magnification and 3.68m-dot resolution. The EVF has a fast 120 fps refresh rate as well for lag-free viewing. Additionally, the LCD is now a 3.0" 1.04m-dot free-angle touchscreen for working intuitively and at odd angles.

20.3MP Digital Live MOS Sensor and Venus Engine
Optimized for high-speed high-resolution imaging, the G9 packs in both a 20.3MP Light MOS Micro Four Thirds sensor and an enhanced Venus Engine processor to create sharp, detailed stills and UHD 4K video. This configuration maximizes resolution while keeping noise to a minimum, permitting the use of sensitivities up to ISO 25600. It is also very fast, enabling continuous shooting rates of up to 60 fps with AF-S and 20 fps with AF-C when using the G9's electronic shutter or 12 fps for AF-S and 9 fps for AF-C using the mechanical shutter.
UHD 4K Video Recording
Supplementing the camera's stellar stills feature set is UHD 4K video recording at up to 60p. The G9 offers 30p internal recording with a 10-bit color depth and 4:2:2 sampling using Long GOP compression to keep files sizes manageable. Users also have access to various frame rates, including 60p, 30p, and 24p in UHD 4K and 60p and 24p in Full HD. Slow motion video is available in the Variable Frame Rate mode with support for 60 and 48 fps resolution in UHD 4K and up to 180 fps in Full HD. Additionally, HDR recording is supported and V-Log L recording is possible with the optional DMW-SFU1 Upgrade Software Key.

In order to maximize image quality, the G9 features a full-size HDMI output for using an optional external recorder to receive 10-bit 4:2:2 footage at all resolutions up to UHD 4K at 60p. Also, both a 3.5mm headphone jack and 3.5mm microphone input are available for improving audio capture.
6K and 4K PHOTO
Utilizing the G9's video recording capabilities, a trio of still shooting modes are available for recording continuous 8MP stills at a 60 or 30 fps shooting rate or 18MP stills at a 30 fps shooting rate:
  • Burst: This mode will allow you to continuously record, making it ideal for instances where you need a fast frame rate in order to capture the best moment.
  • Pre-Burst: This mode is ideal for times when you're unsure of the critical moment to press the shutter button and will record images one second prior to and one second after pressing the shutter button in order to give you 60 frames to choose from.
  • Burst (S/S): This mode most closely follows the video recording process, and allows you to playback your video, pause at the chosen moment, and use the shutter button to mark a chosen frame from the video and save it as a single 8 or 18MP frame.
Dual I.S. 2
Helping to achieve the utmost sharpness when photographing handheld, Dual I.S. 2 combines the G9's sensor-shift image stabilization technology with lens-based image stabilization to compensate for a broader range of movement types to render sharper, clearer imagery. Dual I.S. 2 requires the use of compatible Lumix lenses featuring O.I.S. This stabilization system is able to compensate for approximately six stops of camera shake.
Body Design and Built-In Wi-Fi
  • A large OLED Live View Finder has an impressive 3.86m-dot resolution and 0.83x magnification for eye-level composition. This viewfinder also has a maximum refresh rate of 120 fps for clear, lag-free imagery.
  • A larger means for image composition and playback, the 3.0" 1.04m-dot rear LCD monitor has a free angle, tilt and swivel design to support viewing from a variety of angles. It is also a touchscreen, which permits intuitive menu navigation and settings control.
  • A backlit top status LCD provides immediate access to current settings without needing to raise the camera to eye level.
  • Dual UHS-II SD card slots are present, which provides settings such as Relay Recording to automatically switch cards when one is full; Backup Recording, which records the same data to both cards simultaneously; and Allocation Recording, which lets you save certain files to each card for easier organization.
  • Constructed from magnesium alloy with a die-cast frame, the G9 features a durable design that also incorporates extensive sealing at each joint, dial, and button to render it both splash- and dust-proof as well as freezeproof to 14°F.
  • A joystick is available on the rear of the camera to make changing many settings easier and more intuitive, such as changing a focus point.
  • The sleek flat-body profile incorporates both front and rear dials for intuitive control over aperture and shutter speed settings. Multiple assignable function buttons are also available, including a function lever.
  • Built-in 5 GHz Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC and Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy allows for wireless image sharing and remote camera control from linked smartphones and tablets. Bluetooth LE also enables a constant connection to your mobile device, allowing for functions such as geolocation and automatic image transfer.
225-Area Advanced Depth-From-Defocus AF System
For accelerated autofocus performance, and Advanced DFD (Depth-From-Defocus) technology is employed to quickly calculate the distance to subjects and adjust the focusing position in as little as 0.04 seconds, which enables continuous shooting up to 20 fps with continuous AF. This contrast-detection type focus method benefits both still and video recording modes, as well as subject tracking applications where subject color, size, and motion vectors are used to intelligently lock-onto the moving subjects and ensure precise focus. The sensitivity and speed can be adjusted to further improve performance with certain subjects. It also features 225 AF areas, which provide excellent control over where the camera will focus. Additionally, supporting working in low-light conditions, a Starlight AF feature enables accurate AF performance down to -4 EV.

Benefitting manual focus operation, focus peaking is available that highlights bright edges of contrast with a colored outline for quickly recognizing your focus point, as well as Touch MF Assist for touch-to-focus operation. Other AF features include an AF Point Scope setting that temporarily magnifies the subject by 3x to 10x for confirmation of the focus position and a custom selectable AF zone for Multi AF / Custom Multi AF.
80MP High Resolution Mode
By using sensor-shift stabilization technology the G9 can use a High Resolution Mode to capture and compile eight separate images to create a single 80MP raw file. This system creates a more highly detailed and color accurate image than a single shot alone can produce and can create an image with a 10368 x 7776 resolution.
Other Camera Features
  • A mechanical focal plane shutter enables a fast maximum shutter speed of 1/8000 sec, as well as a top flash sync speed of 1/250 sec. An electronic shutter function also avails a top shutter speed of 1/32,000 sec to better enable working in bright conditions and with wider aperture settings. This shutter is rated for approximately 200,000 actuations.
  • A Night Mode will automatically adjust brightness of the EVF and LCD for comfortable viewing in low-light conditions.
  • An optional external USB power pack can be used to supply power to the camera via its micro-USB port.
  • Depending on the lens in use, the included DMW-BLF19 battery provides approximately 380 shots per charge when using the rear monitor, or 360 with the electronic viewfinder.
  • Photo Style modes: Standard, Vivid, Natural, Monochrome, L. Monochrome, Scenery, Portrait, Custom, Cinelike D, and Cinelike V.
  • Creative Control modes: Expressive, Retro, Old Days, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Monochrome, Dynamic Monochrome, Rough Monochrome, Silky Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Toy Pop, Bleach Bypass, Miniature Effect, Soft Focus, Fantasy, Star Filter, One Point Color, and Sunshine.

Panasonic G9 Reviews

Awesome Pro Level Camera

By Aaron
Rated 5 out of 5
Date: 2023-01-05

The G9 is a wonderful stills camera on many levels. The build quality and ergonomics are excellent. It's just the right size to be comfortable to hold, but not so large to be unwieldy. This camera is packed with many great features, amazing IBIS, always on focus peaking (which I love), 6k photo mode for fast action, plus a multi-shot high resolution mode (tripod only). I love the 3:4 aspect native aspect ratio of the sensor and the image quality is excellent. The lack of an AA filter makes the resulting images appear sharper and more detailed than the 20mp would lead you to believe. Low light performance has been considered the achilles heel of the M43 format. For me, I haven't found that to be the case. On one of my latest shoots at a nightclub (poor lighting), I brought the G9 and a Canon Full Frame with equivalent lenses. I took the same shots with both cameras and what I found was sure, the G9 had some noise, but it was easily cleaned up in post. Overall, I found myself wanting to use the G9 more because of its superior handling. Autofocus performance for stills is excellent. I have no problem with it, it has been fast and accurate for me even in poor lighting. Face detect autofocus works great as well and I use it heavily. I hope that with the arrival of the GH6, Panasonic will again make a stills focused camera like the G9 using the latest sensor and image processor.

Love this camera. I did a lot of research before the purchase. It has great reviews and the customizing that can be done is smart. The design of this camera gives Canon a true challenge. You will not regret this purchase, and B&H' customer support is great! Shipping is crazy fast. Thanks B&H!

There is no reason to buy this camera or any micro 4/3.

By Emilio

I have had the G9 for years since it came out. I got into micro 4/3 because of the size and weight of this system...Had the G7, then GH5, then G9 and finally I bought the Olympus OMD 10 Mark 4, which I love for it's size...then I realized that the image quality is 97% as good as the G9 for a portion of the money and size!! I also realized that I would never choose the G9 when I was going out to take pictures...then I realized that the G9 is humongous and heavy, which is the reason I got out of full frame cameras. So, I went full circle and bought the Sony A7c, which is very small compared to the G9. The kit lens alone that came with the camera is sharper and better in low light than any of the lenses on the micro 4/3 system, including the PRO series!! And if you are a hybrid shooter the A7c is good for video as well as the G9, which is it's only good quality, which inherits from the GH5. And now Sony lenses are the same price as the micro 4/3 so there is no reason for micro 4/3 anymore. Do yourself a favor and get out while the micro 4/3 system has still some value to trade in.

It's a serious camera. It's much bigger than my Olympus EM10, but solidly built. There is a bit of a leaning curve with all of the custom settings. Overall, I'm quite pleased with my purchase.

This G9 kit is a great for HQ travel photography.

The G9 with the 12-60mm lens, although a bit heavy, is great for high quality travel photography. However, the bag that is included with the offering is way to small. Unfortunately, it is not even big enough for my G7. P.s. B&H should test the bag's size before offering it with the kit.

Powerful camera for serious photographers, amateur or pro

It has many useful automated features that will help you get great shots without a lot of fuss, but where it really shines is in all the things it lets you control and customize to deal with challenging subjects and settings, and to personalize the look of your photos. It also has many good features for making high quality short videos, but if you intend to primarily shoot video, there are other Lumix cameras that will serve you better.

Does a 256 GB card work on the G9? I the Toshiba Exceria Pro N502 256GB is slow in playback compared to the Sony 128GB G. The manual states that it accepts only up to 128 GB, so does the 256GB capacity affect the camera perormance?
Asked by: Jun Nan
256GB cards are supported by the camera. Different cards will perform differently. You can try formatting the cards, and a more thorough formatting if necessary. Sometimes cards will slow down over time if they are not thoroughly formatted.

Asked by: YadU
It depends. The autofocus is good compared to other LUMIX cams I have used, but it still leaves a lot to be desired. If you will manually focus or set and forget on a relatively fixed subject then yes - like all higher end LUMIX cams the video looks fantastic. That said - I was disappointed even for simple things like family events where I just wanted to point the camera and record. . I would not recommend it for most people.
