Sky-Watcher Quattro Overview

  • 1Description
  • 2Sky-Watcher 10" f/3.94 Quattro Imaging Newtonian Telescope (OTA Only)
  • 3Sky-Watcher Quattro Coma Corrector
  • 4Sky-Watcher Starlight Xpress Trius SX-42 Monochrome Camera Imaging Kit

Sky-Watcher USA partnered with Starlight Xpress and assembled the Quattro 250P Reflector Telescope with Trius Camera Kit to give astroimagers a complete rig that delivers outstanding performance, especially for capturing deep-sky objects like faint galaxies and wispy nebulae.

This kit comes with a fast Newtonian reflector telescope and the Starlight Xpress Trius monochrome imaging camera. The optical tube assembly (OTA) was specifically designed for imaging with a large 254mm aperture, fully multi-coated borosilicate mirrors, and an impressive f/4 focal ratio. To address a common issue when imaging deep-sky objects with reflectors, Sky-Watcher also includes a coma corrector that ensures crisp clearly delineated stars without distortion or halos even at the edges. The Trius imaging kit comes complete with a Lodestar guide camera to ensure a compatible motorized mount is accurately tracking and a seven-position filter wheel for creating custom images using colored and specialty filters that are easy to change between exposures.

The telescope comes with mounting rings and a Vixen-style dovetail plate, so you only need to supply a large equatorial mount and tripod to begin capturing stunning images.

Sky-Watcher 10" f/3.94 Quattro Imaging Newtonian Telescope (OTA Only)

Sky-Watcher's 10" f/3.94 Quattro Imaging Newtonian Telescope has been specifically engineered for astrophotography and astro-imaging performance. Its 1000mm focal length has been shortened to produce a fast f/3.94 focal ratio which helps to reduce the exposure times required for capturing detailed images of the Moon, planets, and deep-sky objects. To further help boost its performance are borosilicate mirrors which have a low coefficient of thermal expansion to reduce the effects of expansion/contraction due to temperature fluctuation. This helps limit distortion that can occur when moving the OTA from indoors to outdoors and limiting the scope's ability to resolve details. The entire optical system is fully multicoated to increase the reflectivity of all surfaces to produce brighter and sharper images.

For imaging and visual use, the ability to achieve tack-sharp focus is critical, so Sky-Watcher outfitted the Quattro with a large Crayford-style focuser. This design uses a steel rod held tightly against the focus tube under tension. Using this toothless friction system eliminates backlash and enables ultra-fine precision focusing. A large coarse-focus wheel quickly brings subjects into rough focus, and then the 10:1 fine-focus allows the user to precisely focus it without the risk of losing it as soon as the knob is released. Having the ability to use larger 2" accessories and eyepieces provides an immersive experience during observation sessions and the ability to use larger sensors for capturing images, and a reducer adapter is included if you want to use the more common 1.25" eyepieces.

The Quattro is offered here without a mount or tripod for users that have a solid observation platform. Its cradle ring assembly clamps over the OTA and allows the OTA to be positioned for balancing when mounted, the eyepiece to be precisely placed for more comfortable observations, and the entire rig to be adjusted to avoid interference with other equipment and accessories. A Vixen-style dovetail plate on the bottom of the cradle ring assembly makes this OTA compatible with any Vixen-style saddle.

Sky-Watcher Quattro Coma Corrector

Optimized for Quattro imaging Newtonians, the Sky-Watcher Quattro Coma Corrector, delivers stunning wide-field views with pinpoint stars to the edge of the field while the magnification remains unaltered. Made with extra-low dispersion (ED) FPL51 and Schott glass with a fast f/4 focal ratio for imaging, this accessory corrects for chromatic and spherical aberrations that create halos to appear around bright stars and other objects and cause colors to shift. Using the corrector enables users to achieve tack-sharp focus with true color rendition across the entire field of view - especially at the edges. It fits into 2" focusers and requires a backfocus of 55mm (2.16").

Sky-Watcher Starlight Xpress Trius SX-42 Monochrome Camera Imaging Kit

The Starlight Xpress Trius SX-42 Monochrome Camera Imaging Kit was assembled as part of a joint effort between Sky-Watcher USA and Starlight Xpress in honor of Sky-Watcher's 20th Anniversary and specifically designed to address all the normal confusion new imagers have when setting up their first system. The camera system's 17mm back-focus distance (±1mm) is matched for all Sky-Watcher correctors and simply threads onto the corrector for fast and easy setup. This kit includes Starlight Xpress' Trius 694 monochrome imaging camera, their Lodestar X2 monochrome guide camera, plus a seven-position filter wheel equipped with a built-in off-axis guider (OAG). With low power consumption and a compact lightweight design, this imaging kit is the ideal starter rig for anyone interested in astroimaging.

Trius SX-42 Camera

The Trius features a 6MP Sony ExView 694 monochrome sensor to capture your images with a high-speed USB 2.0 connection to your computer that transfers the images in about 5 seconds. The camera housing is outfitted with a USB hub to power peripherals like the included guide camera and filter wheel to limit the amount of cables and reduce tangle or snag hazards. To help keep the system cool during use, the housing is filled with dry argon gas with an integrated fan that can reduce the camera's temperature as much as 104°F (40°C).

Lodestar X2 Monochrome Autoguider

When used in conjunction with autoguiding computer software, the Loadstar Autoguider will monitor the position of a set guide star during long exposure astrophotography or imaging sessions to ensure the mount is accurately tracking the subject so images remain crisp and sharp. If a deviation is detected, the software automatically sends the necessary tracking corrections to your mount. An autoguider is a must-have piece of gear for any astrophotographer. The Lodestar can be powered by the Trius' USB hub and controlled by the computer it is connected to.

Filter Wheel

An indispensable imaging accessory, a filter wheel allows you to change filters without having to touch your gear, unmount or disassemble your imaging system, or otherwise touch your mount or telescope setup. The whee's drive system changes filters quietly and without vibration. With seven filter cells available, you are able to use your primary colored filters, plus special ones like a narrow band, nebulae, and clear focusing filters. To make this as easy as possible for beginner imagers, the wheel accepts standard 1.25" eyepiece filters so you won't have to go out and get all new filters as you move into a new part of you astronomy hobby. The wheel is USB powered, so you can use the Trius' USB hub to power and control it.

An OAG is included, allowing you to use the filter wheel independent of the Trius for observation purposes without losing the convenient auto-correcting functionality of the Trius' guide scope.

What equatorial mount (goto) would you suggest to use it with this telescope?
Asked by: Miguel Arturo
There are several that B&H offers that would work well. The Celestron CGEMII in the recommended accessories would be an excellent choice though.

question

What's the weight of the 8 OTA version?
Asked by: Guillermo K.
I bought a 12 Quattro. It weighs 43lbs. Skywatcher USA doesn't list weights in their catalogue. I have an Orion 8 OTA f/5. That weighs 24lbs. The Skywatcher 8 is probably within 10% of that.
