Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S Overview

Spanning an impressive wide-angle range, the NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S is an ultra-wide zoom for Nikon's FX-format Z-series mirrorless system. The broad field of view is especially well-suited to landscape, architectural, and astrophotography applications, and the constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains a consistent exposure throughout the zoom range. In regard to the optical design, the lens features four extra-low dispersion elements and four aspherical elements, which reduce a variety of aberrations and distortion to produce imagery with high sharpness, clarity, and accurate color rendering. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings are used, too, to suppress flare and ghosting for greater color fidelity and higher contrast.

Complementing the optics, a stepping motor provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override to suit both stills and video applications. A programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings. Additionally, the lens has a button-less retractable barrel to realize a more compact form factor when not in use.

Ultra-wide zoom covers a wide-angle to portrait-length range and is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also contributes to the relatively lightweight design and compact form factor.
Four aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Four extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Stepping motor delivers impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field techniques.
Exposed elements feature a fluorine coating that affords protection to the optical system against dust, grease, and water droplets.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.
Button-less retractable design maintains a compact form factor when the lens is not in use.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S Reviews

Too soft in corners and too much distortion.

This lens got a lot of love online, so I bought it. But the soft corners and distortion were not correctible in LR to my satisfaction. I returned it and bought the Z 14-24, which is significantly better as far as sharpness and distortion control goes. I'm a large print guy.

An Incredible f4 Lens

This light weight f4 zoom is just incredible! Amazingly sharp, I mean really sharp, wether wide open or stopped down. You lose one stop in comparison to the 14-24 f2.8 and you do not have IF which I miss but at $1,000.00 less this less performs really well. Very happy camper.

I worked a lot with this lens. So I don't guess or think. I know. It is better than 12-24 f/2.8 F mount, speaking of pixel peeper nuts. It is the same as 12-24 f/2.8 Z mount with the same f/4. No need to read anything else. Choose according to sharpness and light capability. But again, sharpness is THE SAME as mentioned lens.

Sharp and compact

I've been able to test this lens and I think it's great. It's sharp from the center to the corners at f8 and even f11. It loses a tiny bit of sharpness at f22, but that's expected because of diffraction. With the DoF of a wide angle lens, f22 is rarely needed. I considered the f2.8 lens, but its size and weight discouraged me. Also, with the f2.8 lens, filters attach to the lens hood not the lens. I'm glad I decided to get this one.

Beautifully sharp pictures. No fish eye. Great range

This lens has pretty much become my go-to. Surprising for a wide angle lens. The 30mm range lets it serve for city & focused scene shots which lets it stay on my camera longer and this is a a great time saver while shooting. The quality of the pictures is nothing less than outstanding. Sharp, brilliant color and fast autofocus. Highly recommend even at this fairly high price

Great lens,

How bad is the Barrel Distortion at each focal length? The lens looks quite big so I guess the Barrel Distortion may be acceptable to professional cityscape photographers. I have been thinking about ordering it. Thank you very much.
Asked by: George
This lens has significant barrel distortion, but it is easily and (in some cases) automatically corrected with photo software like Photoshop.

Hi I have the Z6 Nikon camera, in general dose this lens do well with handheld photography?
Asked by: Robert
This will really depend on the lighting situation. F4 is not the fastest Lens, but the Z6 has In body Stabilization, which will help a lot in low light situations. Also, you can bump the iso up pretty high with the Z6 and have acceptable image quality. The only thing you will lose not having a faster lens is a shallow depth of field, but this usually doesn't matter much in an ultra wide and typically you will want a larger depth of field for the photography people tend to use this type of lens for.

I currently use the NISI V6 filter system with this lens, and when using the CPL and an ND or two combined, there is no vignetting at 14mm. It's great not having to use a 150mm filter system. But the NISI sustem is not as simple to use as others such as the new Haida M10 system. But I don't know whether or not it will vignette with this lens at 14mm. Does anyone have a slide-in filter system other than NISI that works with this lens at 14mm? Thanks
Asked by: Daniel
Vignetting would be minimal on the Haida. It would depend how close you look and also if the background is lighter or darker. The Nisi V6 and Haida M10 are very similar though, they have differences in the locking mechanism which I believe is what you are referring to, but both are easy to use in my experience once you get used to it. I don't see that it would improve your ease of use much by going to the Haida M10.

Has anyone used this lens with the Z50 handheld. Area the photos OK even without image stabilization since the Z50 doesn't have in-camera stablization?
Asked by: Carol
I don't have a Z50 but this seems like an odd lens to buy for a DX body. You lose the ultra-wide nature of the lens which is what you are paying for. The lens becomes a 21-45mm lens on a DX body. You are better off buying a wide angle DX lens specifically for your model like the Z 16-50, which is also a lot less expensive. But to your question. This isn't a heavy lens. If you shoot at 1/50 or faster you should be fine. If you are wanting to shoot at slower speeds, then yes, I'd use a mono or tripod with a Z50.

How is this lens' manual focus compared to a mechanical focus lens?
Asked by: Jacob
I love this lens, but this is a "focus by wire" lens (like all other S lenses so far I think, except perhaps the 24-70 f2.8), which means it's great for quiet video autofocus, but for manual stills focusing it's pretty bad actually. There's a very slight delay, when turning the programmable ring, and seeing the focusing effect through the viewfinder or rear screen. It's actually pretty terrible for precise manual focus, but that's the case for all such mirrorless lenses that focus by wire. Also, the resistance is extremely slight, and the effective focus throw is rather short. So it's terrific for autofocus and especially video, but not great at all for stills manual focus imo. The ability to zoom in through the viewfinder does help a lot. If you really want a direct manual focus lens, buy another one, but none will provide the quality, focal lengths and light weight of this one. It's pretty spectacular all things considered.
