For speech, sound effects, and live music recording applications, the TASCAM DR-07X portable handheld recorder is capable of capturing two tracks of high-resolution audio with no external microphones required. Its onboard unidirectional condenser mics can be set in an A-B position for a spacious stereo effect or in an X-Y position for a tight stereo image with minimal phase differences. Equally adept as a handheld device or in stand- or camera-mounted setups, the DR-07X can handle anything from sampling sessions and recitals to interviews and podcasts.

Flexible powering methods—batteries, USB bus power, or an AC adapter—make the DR-07X well suited for on-the-go recording, all-day video shoots, and computer-based audio production. Need to patch in a lavalier mic or an outboard mixer? The DR-07X's 3.5mm mini-jack input accommodates mic- or line-level signals, and can supply plug-in power if needed. Whether you use the built-in mics or an external source, selectable modes such as peak reduction, limiting, and auto-level give you options for achieving clean, undistorted recordings.

Onboard Adjustable Unidirectional Microphones
The DR-07X's onboard condenser microphones empower you with stereo capture for sources producing sound pressure levels up to 125 dB, so loud concerts won't be a problem. Whereas the DR-05X has omnidirectional mics in a fixed A-B setup, the DR-07X features adjustable unidirectional mics. The unidirectional mics minimize the pickup of sound entering from the rear of the capsules, resulting in a more focused tone with fewer reflections.

Easily pivot the capsules between two mic configurations to complement your sound source—use the A-B position (capsules facing outward) to produce a wide stereo image, or switch to the X-Y position (capsules facing inward) if you need a tighter stereo field with a strong center presence and fewer phase differences.
3.5mm Microphone/Line Input with Plug-In Power
For maximum intelligibility and optimal vocal tone, recordists often prefer to use lavalier microphones that can be attached to the subject's clothing. The DR-07X's 3.5mm mini-jack input is designed for precisely that situation; clip a lav mic (available separately) to the talent, then plug it into the 3.5mm input on the DR-07X. Knowing that many lav mics require a small amount of voltage called plug-in power, TASCAM offers a selectable setting to supply plug-in power to the 3.5mm input.

If you need to record the output of a wireless microphone receiver or an audio mixer, the 3.5mm input can accommodate it with its line-level signal input. Since any source connected to the 3.5mm mini jack will override the onboard mic input, you won't have to sift through menus to select the proper input.
Supports microSDXC Cards up to 128GB
To maximize compactness and portability, the DR-07X records directly to media cards (available separately). microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards (up to 128GB capacity) are supported for long recording times even at high audio resolutions. With a 128GB card, the DR-07X can record in stereo for up to 192 hours at 16-bit / 44.1 kHz using uncompressed, BWF-compliant WAV format.
3.5mm Line/Headphone Output
When you want to record to your camera and the DR-07X, just connect the 3.5mm mini-jack output from the DR-07X into your camera's input, then use the +/- buttons on the Home screen to adjust the output level. Alternatively, connect a pair of headphones to the 3.5mm mini jack for critical listening. Quick monitor checks can be done through the DR-07X's built-in mono speaker.
USB Microphone and Audio Interface Functionality
Connect the DR-07X to your Mac/Windows computer or iOS device via USB for real-time bidirectional audio routing. Once recognized and configured, the DR-07X can be used as a USB microphone or 2-in/2-out audio interface for your favorite audio software. For convenient file transfers, the DR-07X can function as a card reader when connected via USB.
Powered via AA Batteries, USB, or AC Adapter
Using the two included AA alkaline batteries, you can power the DR-07X for up to 17.5 hours of stereo recording time at 16-bit / 44.1 kHz resolution. For long-duration sessions that require extended recording time, the DR-07X may be powered via a USB connection to a computer or mobile battery, or through the TASCAM PS-P520E AC adapter (available separately).
Ideal for Handheld or Tripod-Mounted Use
Designed for optimal portability, the DR-07X is both small and light. The streamlined body lends itself to comfortable use when held in the hand or placed in a pocket. To foil unplanned button presses in such situations, engage the side-panel hold switch. Utilize the 1/4"-20 threaded hole on the underside of the DR-07X to mount it on a mic stand or tripod for stable, stationary positioning.
Built-In Level Modes and Signal Processing Enhance Audio Quality
Enhance the sonic impact of your audio with the DR-07X's built-in level modes and signal processing. Engage automatic level control to increase or decrease the recording volume when the input sound is too quiet or loud, and switch on the limiter to compress the signal before it reaches the point of distortion. In rehearsal mode or while recording, the peak reduction function automatically reduces the input gain to a suitable level.

Mitigate wind noise and low-frequency rumble by selecting the low-cut filter, which can be set at 40, 80, or 120 Hz. You can even choose to apply a hall, room, studio, or plate reverb preset to the input or output signal. Upon playback, treble, mid, and bass frequencies may be boosted or reduced for custom output tone.
Selectable Recording Functions
The DR-07X offers several recording functions that simplify your workflow and save you from missing the beginning of a performance. Once enabled, the prerecord setting keeps the DR-07X in standby mode, which allows it to capture up to two seconds of signal before you press the record button. The DR-07X is also capable of recording in response to an input signal. Its auto-record function can begin recording at a user-selectable decibel threshold of -6, -12, -24, or -48 dB. If you'll be recording yourself while playing an instrument such as piano or drums, you can use the self-timer function to initiate recording after a set period of time (5 or 10 seconds).
Nondestructive Overdubbing
The DR-07X's overdubbing is perfect for layering a new performance over an existing track. By overdubbing, you can play an instrument or sing as you play back a saved track. Both sounds will be merged in a new file, keeping the original file intact.
Tone Generator for Synchronizing Files
An internal tone generator makes it easy to synchronize files recorded on the DR-07X and your camera. When the DR-07X is connected to a camera, an adjustable auto-tone will be sent to the camera and recorded to the DR-07X. The resulting tones can be used as guides when synchronizing your files in video editing software.

TASCAM DR-07X Reviews

Performed much better than I anticipated!

I bought this recorder so I could lay down song ideas while playing my acoustic guitar away from the home studio where I have Studio One on my computer. Typically for me, when the weather is good I'll just go out on my deck where I have a lawn chair and small table (to hold the recorder and my beverage of choice!). It works great! I just set the unit on the table with the mics hanging over the edge at guitar height. My advice, don't automatically set the record level at max, test it at various levels. An over-driven record level doesn't sound good here. Once the level is set (where I leave it all the time now) I record at 48k and gosh I was very pleasantly surprised at just how good it sounds. The mics are quite directional so one doesn't get a lot of external noise on the recording. The directions that come with the unit are easy to follow for the most part. The booklet is kind of thick but that's because it's written in at least half a dozen languages so don't be put off by that. For me, the beauty here is being able to spontaneously record ideas, perhaps in a variety of different ways, without having to set up the mics etc. in the home studio. With this recorder I just set it down, turn it on, and press record when I want to save an idea. It doesn't get any easier than that! Later I'll download those idea takes to my computer and decide which version I prefer. From there I work out all the parts and after that I'll do my best effort using Studio One. The only problem I had is when I connected it to my iMac the first time. When making that first connection It took awhile for the iMac to identify the Drivers(?) and that confused me. I got in touch with TASCAM support and worked out the problem in no time at all. In fact, the problem was of my own making as I was too impatient to wait for the initial connection and Driver download to be made (assuming I understood what happened correctly). Once I made the connection that first time I could just plug in the cable and easily download a music file from the DR-O7X to the iMac. After that I just imported it to Studio One. Very simple! So I am very pleased with this unit. It does just what I hoped it would do and it does that well. I haven't tried to use it as a remote recording device for live music with a full band etc. so I really cannot comment on that. But my guess is that it would work quite well there also.

Good quality instrument; poor instructions.

The audio recorder works. Very well for our purpose - checking voices to stay on keywith instruments. Operating instructions, however seem to be written for someone who already knows how to use the device. Some steps are left out. After some trial and error we have it working for basic recording, but there are NO instructions on how to overdub.

Microphones are good. Using as an USB audio interface is very convenient and the recorder captures natural sound. Highly recommended.

Significant Problem with RF Interference - Beware!

By David

I received the DR-07X about a week ago. It is a nice unit, but it has a serious problem that makes it very unreliable to use in many situations. It picks up major electronic noise from my iPhone 7 (on the Verizon network) when the phone is less than about 7 feet away. The interference sound is a pulsing static-like noise that is quite loud. It is picked up when using the two built-in microphones. (It doesn't happen with the aux input.) Unfortunately you will not hear this RF interference unless you are actually listening to the recording. So it is a particularly dangerous defect, since it could happen whenever anyone with a cell phone is near the unit. I almost always have my iPhone in my pocket. Unless I turn the phone off or leave it somewhere else, it is a huge problem with this device. If you are considering purchasing this unit, please be aware of this serious problem. It is mentioned in other reviews, but I did not realize how loud the interference would be, and how it makes the unit essentially unusable in many situations. This is a significant FAIL for Tascam. I'm not sure how this design defect got past their engineering and testing group. Buyer beware!!!

Poor Manufacturer Support

Based on the unit I received last week, this has the potential to be an excellent recorder. However, based on my experience, the built in microphones at times have had insufficient gain to record even a typical conversation at generally accepted record levels (-12 to -20 dB). This occurs with the level controls set at maximum. The recorder has no such difficulty recording with an external mic, but this is not always practical. Tech support from TASCAM has been virtually non-existent. Nearly a week ago, I reached out to the company through the contact-us page on their web site, and did not receive a reply. As some reviewers have stated, the build quality of this unit is not very rugged, but it's not what I would consider flimsy. Overall, I believe there are better alternatives to this product.

Great product, great price

Love the quality of the sound it records and the operation is very easy. Love the movable microphones. Buyers may like to know I plug a Bluetooth transmitter into head phone port and use Bluetooth headphones. I am sure a Bluetooth receiver could be used also in the microphone port. Overall it is a well thought out mobile recorder.

RF interference when using the built-in microphones

By Dennis
Rated 2 out of 5

Like David in his review, I also experienced major RF interference when using the built-in microphones on the Tascam DR-07X. When recording audio from my iPhone 12 Mini using an external mic there was no issue. However, when I switched to the built-in microphones there was a loud pulsating static sound that basically drowned out what was being recorded. And I didn't realize it until I had made several recordings using the built-in mics thinking they were as good as an external one. I haven't tested this recorder with other electronic devices or other phones. I can say that if your audio source is an iPhone and you are anywhere near it and using the built-in mics, your recording will be seriously affected.

A great recorder to put in your pocket and take with you for easy audio recording. Nice quality with attached microphones or when using a plug-in mic.
