SLR Magic MicroPrime Cine 12mm T2.8 Overview

Choosing a smaller size over bulk and weight, the SLR Magic MicroPrime Cine 12mm T2.8 Lens covers MFT sensors and features a Micro Four Thirds mount. Suitable for 4K origination, each lens in the MicroPrime Cine series features similar size and weight with consistent lens gear positions for rapid lens changes and easier rebalancing when changing lenses on a gimbal.

The lens provides a pleasing bokeh with natural-looking out-of-focus highlights. The lens has an internal focus design so the front of the lens doesn't rotate when focusing, and it has an 82mm filter thread for compatibility with a wide number of filter options.

Each lens in the MicroPrime Cine series features similar balance characteristics, minimizing recalibration when switching lenses while your camera is on a gimbal.
Internal focus mechanism minimizes breathing and prevents the front of the lens from rotating while pulling focus.
An 82mm front filter thread enables mounting filters directly to the lens without using a matte box.

From t2.8 to t4 there is no clarity. This puts you in an extremely negative situation. That's all I have to say

I use this lens on my Sony a6000 and my FS7 and it looks great. It’s made of metal and a 2.8 cine lens. I’ve become a big fan of these SLR Magic microprime lenses and now have several of them.

This is great to use with the Sony FS5, since it's made for that specific crop and mount. Very clean.

Fantastic lens for on the go filmmaking

I was first impressed by the sturdy make of the lens and it didn't take long to fall in love with the picture that comes from it. I actually purchased the 35 first for my fuji X-T3 (crop sensor/1.8) and loved it so much that I immediately ordered this one. at 1.8 crop it is probably the equivalent of a 19 or 20mm but this is actually quite good because the unused portion of the image would probably be the distorted part. The focus is smooth yet must be moved with intention which is great. The small form factor of this series of lenses makes it great for moving fast and handheld so you can get a cinematic look without having to constantly be attached to rigging. As you'll read from the description, the focus and iris rings are in common places on all the lenses for quick follow focus re-application when changing lenses. I think I want one more in my set so will probably get the 75 as soon as I have a job that requires it :)

Doesn't Fit Right

Haven't been very happy with this lens. For $300, what do you expect though. It doesn't fit properly in my BMPCC 4K, and has a small bit of shake at the mount. It moves up and down within the mount, so when I use the focus ring or adjust the aperture, the lens shakes within the mount. It just feels so cheaply made. Would not recommend buying this lens.

A great value!

Well made and functions smoothly. Sharp enough; not razor sharp. Excellent contrast but be careful about flare. It's not a Cooke or an Arri but it's probably all the lens you'll need.

Will I get the field of view of 12mm or it will be 24mm?

That will depend on the camera you are using and its crop factor. However most MFT cameras have a 2x crop factor, which would give you a 24mm field of view.

Will this work for still photos? Does it have autofocus compatibility with Olympus MFT bodies?
Asked by: Walter
The SLR Magic MicroPrime Cine 12mm T2.8 Lens (Micro Four Thirds Mount) can be used for still photography, but it is a fully manual lens, which means there is no stabilization, and one will need to manually pull the focus and the aperture.

What are the primary differences between this and the SLR Magic 12mm f/2.8 Cine Prime Lens for Fuji X Mount?
Asked by: James
SLR Magic's Micro Prime Series lenses are designed to have uniformity across the set. when you purchase a set of Micro Primes the Focus/Aperture Rings, Size/Weight, Filter threads, lens coating are the same across all of the lenses. The benefit of uniformity is that it saves you time and energy when producing content. The lenses all have the same filter thread therefore you only need to have one set of filters (no step up rings required) The lenses are all the same size/weight and have the focus/aperture rings in the same spot which saves time when swapping lenses because you do not need to adjust the position of your follow focus or matte box. The lenses are built to perform exactly the same across the set so that it is easier to match your shots in post production. If you compare an individual Micro Prime with a Cine Prime there is no difference between the lenses. They have the same specs and more or less perform very similarly but if you plan to get a set of lenses it makes a lot more sense to go for the Micro Primes so that you don't have to fuss with step up rings every time you want to swap filters on your lenses, readjust the placement of your follow focus every time you swap your lenses, change the position of your matte box when you swap lenses, or deal with minute color differences due to different lens coatings on the various focal lengths.
