As part of Panasonic's entry into full-frame mirrorless, the Lumix DC-S1 is a well-rounded camera offering advanced feature-sets for both stills and video, along with a robust physical construction. Characterized by its full-frame 24.2MP MOS sensor, which is supported by an updated Venus Engine, the S1 offers impressive image quality along with a quick 9 fps shooting rate and expanded sensitivity range up to ISO 204800. In regard to video, the S1 can record UHD 4K30p with full-pixel readout, 4:2:0 10-bit color, and unlimited shooting times, as well as 4K60p for up to 29:59. HDR video recording is possible using the dedicated Hybrid Log Gamma mode, and a firmware update will be available to add 4:2:2 10-bit internal recording along with V-Log. Complementing both stills and video capabilities, the image sensor also utilizes an advanced DFD contrast-detection autofocus system for quick and precise focusing and subject tracking. Additionally, sensor-shift image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by 5.5 stops for sharper handheld shooting.

Beyond the imaging attributes, the S1 is also distinguished by its body design, which incorporates an impressively high resolution 5.76m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder along with a 3.2" 2.1m-dot triaxial tilt touchscreen LCD. The magnesium-alloy body is weather-sealed to permit working in harsh conditions and has a top status LCD for reviewing shooting settings on the fly. XQD and SD card slots offer flexible storage capabilities and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity afford remote camera control along with wireless image transferring to tablets and smartphones.

24.2MP Full-Frame MOS Sensor and Venus Engine
Featuring a full-frame 24.2MP MOS sensor, along with an updated Venus Engine, the S1's imaging capabilities have been optimized for high sensitivity, a wide dynamic range, and flexible recording modes. The sensor and processor incorporate Multipixel Luminance Generation and Intelligent Detail Processing technologies, which help to produce high resolution and definition by suppressing color moiré, and Color Control further enhances color reproduction, especially in the highlights and shadows. The Venus Engine's processing power also helps to suppress noise levels throughout the sensitivity range, from ISO 100-51200, and yield fast full-resolution continuous shooting speeds up to 9 fps with AF-S or 6 fps with AF-C, for more than 90 consecutive raw files.
UHD 4K HDR Video Recording
Beyond stills shooting, the S1 is a highly capable video camera featuring UHD 4K30p recording with full-pixel readout, 4:2:0 10-bit color, and unlimited recording time along with UHD 4K60p recording for up to 29 minutes 59 seconds. Full HD recording is also supported, up to 60p with unlimited recording times. Also, high-speed recording modes for UHD 4K60, with 30 fps playback, and Full HD 180 fps, with 30 fps playback, offer 2x and 6x slower motion, respectively.

Complementing the video quality, a High Dynamic Range (HDR) mode, along with a dedicated Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) Photo Style mode, can be used to expand highlight and shadow details and offer greater flexibility when color grading. An optional paid firmware update will be available to further heighten recording capabilities with support for 4:2:2 sampling, 10-bit color depth internal recording along with V-Log. Additionally, recording to an optional external recorder is possible, via the HDMI Type A port, and support for an external microphone and headphones are also available via dedicated 3.5mm jacks.
Body Design
  • Used in conjunction with other members of the L-Mount Alliance, the L lens mount is a versatile interface with a mount diameter of 51.6mm and a flange distance of 20mm for working with a broad range of optics.
  • An impressive Real View Finder is a high-resolution 5.76m-dot OLED EVF offering a clear 0.78x configurable viewing magnification along with a smooth 60 fps or 120 fps changeable refresh rate, 0.005 sec lag, and 10,000:1 contrast ratio.
  • Large 3.2" 2.1m-dot LCD is a bright, clear means for live view shooting as well as playback and menu navigation. The screen features a triaxial tilting design to suit working from high and low angles, even in the vertical shooting orientation, and its touchscreen design affords intuitive settings control. Live View Boost is a dedicated viewing mode for working in low-light conditions, where the viewing sensitivity can be increased to aid in composing your image, and a Night mode also benefits working in dark conditions by lowering the screen's backlight intensity.
  • In addition to the rear LCD, a top status LCD can also be used for quickly reviewing shooting settings, even when the camera is powered off.
  • Durable, weather-sealed magnesium-alloy construction is splash, dust, and freezeproof to accommodate working in harsh weather conditions and trying environments.
  • Ergonomic design provides a large, comfortable right-hand grip along with easily accessible physical controls, an eight-way joystick, and a refined overall UI design for intuitive use. Additionally, illuminated buttons aid settings adjustment in low-light conditions and a lock lever prevents unwanted settings changes.
  • Dual memory card slots—one XQD slot and one SD slot—offer improved flexibility for image storage, allowing you to segregate raw and JPEG files to different cards, save duplicate files to both cards, or simply double your storage space with overflow recording. Additionally, the SD slot is UHS-II compatible for fast read/write speeds and the XQD slot will be compatible with the CFexpress standard after a future firmware update.
  • A USB Type-C port allows for fast file transferring as well as high-speed in-camera battery charging. Additionally, an HDMI Type A port benefits video applications, a 2.5mm port can be used with the optional DMW-RS2 Remote Shutter, 3.5mm microphone and headphone jacks suit advanced audio recording needs, and a PC sync port can be used for wired flash synchronization.
  • DMW-BLJ31 rechargeable lithium-ion battery is rated for approximately 380-400 shots per charge when working with the rear monitor, 360-380 shots per charge with the EVF, and 1100-1150 shots per charge when Power Save LVF mode is on.
  • High precision shutter mechanism offers a top mechanical speed of 1/8000 sec, a flash sync speed of 1/320 sec, and has been tested for approximately 400,000 actuations.
Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization
Helping to achieve the utmost sharpness when photographing handheld, Dual I.S. 2 combines the S1's 5.5 stop-rated 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization technology with lens-based 2-axis image stabilization to compensate for a broader range of movement types to render sharper, clearer imagery. Dual I.S. 2 requires the use of compatible Lumix lenses featuring O.I.S. This stabilization system is able to compensate for approximately 6 stops of camera shake.
DFD Autofocus System
For accelerated autofocus performance, the DFD (Depth-From-Defocus) technology quickly calculates the distance to subjects and adjusts the focusing position in as little as 0.08 seconds, with sensor and lens communication occurring at rates up to 480 fps. This contrast-detection type focus method benefits both still and video recording modes, as well as subject tracking applications, using Advanced AI Technology, where subject type, color, size, and motion vectors are used to intelligently lock-onto the moving subjects and ensure precise focus. When working with portrait subjects, face/eye detection capabilities make it easier to photograph people and prioritize focusing as specifically as on a subject's pupil. The focusing sensitivity and speed can be adjusted to further improve performance with certain subjects. It also features 225 AF areas, which provide excellent control over where the camera will focus. Additionally, supporting working in low-light conditions, a Low Light AF feature enables accurate AF performance down to -6 EV.

Benefitting manual focus operation, focus peaking is available that highlights bright edges of contrast with a colored outline for quickly recognizing your focus point, as well as Touch MF Assist for touch-to-focus operation. Other AF features include an AF Point Scope setting that temporarily magnifies the subject by 3x to 10x for confirmation of the focus position and a custom selectable AF zone for Multi AF / Custom Multi AF.
6K and 4K PHOTO
Utilizing the S1's video recording capabilities, a trio of still shooting modes are available for recording continuous 3:2 or 4:3 8MP stills at a 60 or 30 fps shooting rate or 18MP stills at a 30 fps shooting rate:
  • Burst: This mode will allow you to continuously record, making it ideal for instances where you need a fast frame rate in order to capture the best moment.
  • Pre-Burst: This mode is ideal for times when you're unsure of the critical moment to press the shutter button and will record images one second prior to and one second after pressing the shutter button in order to give you 60 frames to choose from.
  • Burst (S/S): This mode most closely follows the video recording process, and allows you to playback your video, pause at the chosen moment, and use the shutter button to mark a chosen frame from the video and save it as a single 8 or 18MP frame.
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
Bluetooth Low Energy (4.2) provides constant connection between your smartphone or table and the camera with minimal power consumption. For more robust wireless activities, IEEE 802.11ac and b/g/n support is also available for faster transmission and more fluid remote control and monitoring.

Complementing the camera's wireless connectivity, Lumix Sync is an iOS and Android app designed to pair with the camera for smartphone or tablet-based remote shooting control and wireless image transferring.
Lumix S 24-105mm f/4 Macro O.I.S. Lens
Included with the camera body, the Lumix S 24-105mm f/4 Macro O.I.S. is a wide-angle to short-telephoto zoom featuring a constant f/4 maximum aperture. Its optical design includes a series of low dispersion and aspherical elements, which control a variety of aberrations, color fringing, and distortion in order to realize a high degree of sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy. Balancing its optical performance, this zoom is also unique due to is 1:2 maximum magnification ratio and 11.8" minimum focusing distance to suit working with close-up subjects. Additionally, an Optical Image Stabilizer, which supports the camera's Dual I.S. 2, helps to control the effects of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting, and the lens sports a weather-sealed design for use in harsh conditions.
Other Camera Features
  • By using sensor-shift stabilization technology, the S1 features a High Resolution mode to capture and compile eight separate exposure to create a single 96MP raw or JPEG file. Suitable for static subjects and when working on a tripod, this mode creates a more highly detailed and color accurate image than a single shot alone can produce and produces an image with a 12000 x 8000-pixel resolution.
  • HLG Photo mode offers increased dynamic range for improved retail in shadow and highlight regions of the image. When working in HLG Photo mode, images can be saved as an HSP file in either 4K or full resolution, in addition to JPEG and raw formats, for vivid playback on 4K televisions.
  • In addition to conventional 3:2, 4:3, 1:1, and 16:9 ratios, photos can also be recorded in 65:24 and 2:1 panoramic formats.
  • I.S. Status Scope helps to recognize the type of camera shake being caused by displaying an arrow in the viewfinder or on the rear LCD.
  • Flicker Decrease automatically detects the frequency/flicker of artificial lighting and activates the shutter at peak brightness moments to render exposures with consistent exposure and color.
  • Helping to contain bright highlights, Highlight Weighted Metering mode prioritizes highlight values when making an exposure metering in order to prevent scenes from blowing out.
  • Offering more versatility than standard Auto White Balance (AWB), an AWBw setting will retain a reddish warm tint while AWBc offers a cooler, bluish tint.
  • Lumix Tether enables wired, tethered shooting capabilities via USB connection between the camera and a computer. Aside from offering a larger live view preview, this application also permits remotely triggering the shutter, use of 6K and 4K Photo modes, and video recording start/stop.

    Rated 4 out of 5 by from SUPERB hardware with some firmware limitations! Keeping this short. This is a FANTASTIC camera body. The 10bit color, 4k 60p and full size HDMI are wonderful. Unlimited 4k 30p recording and no overheating is great. This sensor is stunning and perfectly (and suspiciously ;-)  matches the Sony A7-II and Nikin Z6 in every way. I just wish the stock video codec was more robust. Its HLG is limited to a lousy 72mbp/s and all 4k recording is deliberately crippled with 128k compressed audio. (really bad move there) However, the paid VLog update will fix this for most professionals. I think the hardware is VERY over-built and will be able to match whatever other companies release in the next 2-3 years with future firmware additions. (like Atomos raw over HDMI and ProResRAW) This camera is only limited by its current firmware today. However, I LOVE THIS CAMERA ALREADY!

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from A True Professionals Camera As a professional having owned the best of Canon, Nikon, Fuji and Olympus this has thus far been a very refreshing and fulfilling experience with the S1. First of all it is built to the very highest standards and weighs accordingly. This is NOT a camera for those looking for a small lightweight mirrorless camera. This is a camera for those looking for professional results and a build quality that assures many years of use in the field or the studio. It has by far the most customizability of any camera Ive ran into. Ergonomically its clear this was designed for the human hands, not just as an afterthought. The single focus speed is lightning quick and accurate, so ideal for a portrait or landscape photographer. I havent yet put it through its paces regarding tracking fast moving subjects, but I suspect this wont quite be in the Sony league regarding that. Every tool has its strengths and weaknesses and ones choice must be based on THAT tool meeting their particular needs. The color science on this camera is without a doubt the ONLY one Ive ever used that easily competes with Canon. Sharpness and Detail with this sensor is as good as it gets. The EVF will truly impress as its the FIRST I can honestly say would cause one to give up their OVF. NO lag, unreal accurate portrayal of the scene and sharpness that makes manual focus instant and accurate. Ive never experienced that before. The optics with even the 24-105 so called kit lens is beyond the competition and Ive used the Canon and Sony so thats where Im coming from. My 24-105 is sharp from one end to the other at all corners so quite an achievement. I had not considered Panasonic as a real player in this field until now. Glad this didnt disappoint.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best full-frame mirrorless by far Ive been using Nikon forever but traded in my D810 a year ago and got a Sony A7RIII. The Sony definitely had some decent specs but the handling and user interface was terrible. I got the Lumix S1 a few weeks ago and, despite only having the kit lens for now, Im really impressed. Menus make a lot of sense but I rarely need to access them due to intelligent defaults. Camera feels really good in my hand. The colors look really great and accurate especially compared to Sonys Bayer array and processing. Low light is really good too.  Focus is fast and super accurate for stills. Seems to hunt less than my Sony in low light which was a surprise considering its using contrast detection. The Sony does better with focus in burst mode and video though. Although video quality is substantially better on the S1 though. Ive been able to mess with the focus settings and get it to perform fairly well in AF-C for video. Anyway Im really happy to finally have a Mirrorless that seems better than my favorite DSLRs.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from First class...and then some As a wedding and commercial videographer/photographer I need fast lenses, sharp optics, consistent colour, very low light capabilities and an overall system that can react as fast as I can and can do photos and video well. I dont mind switching brands so Ive bought Nikons (D4, D700, D610, D500), Sony A77II (for the handling) with Zeiss 135mm & 85mm, the Samsung NX1 and Fuji X-H1/grip (56mm & 16-55mm). The S1 is a true Pro camera. Reminds me of the Nikon F4 in terms of the feel and confidence using it. I was unexpectedly impressed with the 24-105 and those optics are SHARP. The stabilization is perfect and the files are crisp and the colour true. I just got finished taking it with me to a destination wedding along with the G9 and it was a dream to use. One dinner was outdoors and was totally candlelit and it was beautiful to be able to catch the atmosphere without flash. It sees very well in the dark and to be honest I used flash maybe for 7 shots for the whole week. The level of customization is excellent as I can basically set things up exactly how I want with all the buttons. For those who complain about size, weight...to me that is a joke. I had this thing with me every day in the sun, up and down and all around and never had issues carrying it. I have the battery grip for handling and the battery life for my style of shooting gives me at least 750 per battery. I actually never drained any of the batteries, even during the wedding day. The Panasonic S1 is a complete photographic tool that gets out of my way and allows me to capture whatever I can think of confidently and discreetly if needs be. I also own the Sigma SD Quattro H/Sigma 50mm/1.4 and with the soon to be released adapter I can use the 50/1.4 on the S1 as well. Looking forward to that!

It is an really good product, the images are clean and sharp, very easy to use! top of the line for sure, the weight is not an issue, even on a gimbal! the only bad point is when recording higher than 60p it has only auto exposure mode which makes it mostly unsuable for pro video, can t wait to test it with my cine lenses when the adapter comes out!

    Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pro and cons So far I’ve been enjoying shooting stills on the S1. Still waiting to see if sigmas mc-21 will support full functionality with my case of canon lenses. Video is pretty good but I get EXTREME jello and rolling shutter when I record the video to the atomos ninja V. Could be on the recorded side, still testing. The body of the S1 is big but I’ve embraced it and it feels gods in the hand. With the promised specs of 4:2:2 10 bit Vlog internal video, it will be a pretty small compared to other video cameras with the same specs.

Ive done Weddings, Portraits, Product Photography and Real Estate for pay but love Landscape and Wildlife. I followed the progress of this camera and before pulling the trigger on a Sony again (had several of their A7 series), Fuji (had a few of their top dogs as well) or Canon (started with them) I couldnt resist trying out a S1 with the so called kit lens. That term is a bad joke referring to a lens that in my testing out found to be superior to ALL other 24-105s out there. The Viewfinder is an epiphone and will turn any OVF off of that technology. The build simply imparts one with the knowledge they are dealing with a precision device, not just another camera. The LCD is solid as can be not the typical weak wobbly affair of most other cameras. The shutter is like butter! The big unfortunate LIE out there on the internet due mainly to the fact users are NOT properly setting their camera up, is that the focus system has issues. I came from working with a A7III, Canon R and Nikon Z6 and frankly the S1s focus is not only more accurate but lightning FAST! Anyone having issues with this cameras focus need to read Panasonics extensive explanation of how to set up their focus system.  The ergonomics have literally set the bar for others that need to start following. Battery life once again if set up properly can yield at least 500+ shots at minimum. The 24-105 f4 is a lens that is essentially sharp edge to edge across its entire focal range and has NO discernable chromatic aberrations. All I can say is if youre on the fence or considering a professional tool you simply HAVE to work with one, and DO set it up properly. Youll be in love.
