Key Features
- Leica M-Mount Lens
- Aperture Range: f/3.5 to f/22
- One Aspherical Element
- Manual Focus Design
Balancing historical reference with modern optical performance, the Color-Skopar 21mm f/3.5 Aspherical from Voigtlander is an ultra-wide prime designed for Leica M-mount rangefinder cameras. The broad field of view is complemented by the inclusion of one aspherical element, which controls distortion and spherical aberrations in order to achieve accurate rendering and high sharpness throughout the aperture range. Its f/3.5 maximum aperture also contributes to a sleek and lightweight form factor, making it an ideal walk-around lens for everyday shooting. Additionally, its manual focus design permits working with subjects as close as 1.6' away, and the 10-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

What functions, what benefits do I lose, or what ...
What functions, what benefits do I lose, or what limitations do I suffer if I use a Voigtlander 21mm M mount lens with a VM-E adapter on a Sony E camera rather than using the same 21mm in Sony E mount ?
I was the one who asked the question and I got the answer by another means. I think it will be of interest to readers and so I share it here.
There are three practical differences.
1. The E-mount version contains electronic contacts which allow the transmission of EXIFs.
2. The E version also provides magnification in the viewfinder to achieve greater precision during Focus Peaking.
3. The E-mount lens allows you to take advantage of the anti-vibration system specific to the Sony Alpha body.
These three functions are not accessible if you use the lens in its M mount version on the Sony Alpha camera via an adapter.
But that's not all. If the optical formulas of the 2 lenses are the same, there are still tiny differences in the thickness of certain individual lenses inside the complete lens between the M mount version and the E mount version. Indeed, the optical formula is optimized for a Sony sensor (which has a thin glass thickness in front of the sensor) in the E-mount lens, while it is optimized for a Leica sensor (which has a thick protective glass sensor size) in the M-mount lens. Even though it is the same lens, the native E-mount version will perform better in terms of image quality on a Sony, than the M-mount version which is intended for use with a Leica sensor.
