The Shinobi 5" 4K HDMI Monitor is an on-camera monitor with DCI 4K, UHD 4K, and HD video input. It features a 10-bit FRC IPS screen with a brightness of 1000 cd/m², which makes it suitable for use in both exterior and interior conditions. The AtomHDR display technology allows you to accurately monitor your log gamma footage without having to view flat, washed-out looking images or use a LUT to compress the dynamic range and color space. The monitor supports popular log formats from Sony, Canon, Panasonic, ARRI, RED, and JVC cameras.

Built to withstand the rigors of production, the Shinobi features a lightweight plastic chassis and powers from a single L-series battery. Additional features include a variety of onscreen exposure analysis, framing, and focus assist tools, as well as anamorphic de-squeeze. A 12V power supply with L-series battery eliminator is included with the unit.

AtomHDR
With AtomHDR you can monitor up to ten stops of dynamic range of your camera's LOG image. Most conventional monitors can only display six or seven stops, which is fine for standard footage; but a Log image will look overly flat. It is also superior to monitoring with a loaded LUT, which can clip the highlights and mask shadows.

Audio Monitoring
Input/output audio via HDMI and output audio using the 3.5mm headphone port for convenient audio monitoring.
5" Daylight Viewable Screen
The Shinobi features a 5" IPS LCD screen that is illuminated by a bright 1000 cd/m² LED backlight, making it possible to view in daylight without requiring a hood. Plus, the screen is also color calibrated from the factory to ensure accurate image representation.
HDR Signal Management
Log and HDR signals can be difficult to monitor with conventional equipment. Though, with the Shinobi's built-in HDR signal management functions, the log signal can be converted to the PQ standard for compatibility with existing consumer and professional HDR equipment.
Anamorphic De-Squeeze
The Shinobi supports Anamorphic de-squeeze, allowing you to comfortably view anamorphic footage with a squeeze of 2x, 1.5x, 1.33, and Panasonic's 8:3.

Atomos Shinobi Reviews

Dead after 30-40 hours of usage

I bought one of these 3 years ago. I'm not a DP so I only used this monitor for fun passion projects over the years. It's been collecting dust 99% of its life. I went to turn it on the other day and the monitor was completely dead. I contacted ATOMOS customer support and after several days of going back and forth completely wasting my time (they could have asked their questions in one email instead of one at at time over the course of a week) they said it would cost $150 to repair the monitor. 50% of the cost of the monitor to repair something that will most likely just break again. My DP friends said to avoid ATOMOS. I should have listened to them. I'm never purchasing another product from ATOMOS ever again.

As Advertised

I have been doing research for about a year on this device. Let's just say I'm thorough. There is a ton of garbage out there that's cheaper. However, I didn't want to worry about not having enough nits of light (direct sun-light not a problem at all!) Lack of power or becoming a drain to the battery or any other camera components when you compromise with cheap products. Nothing is cheap and I couldn't be more happier with this unit. It does feel like refined plastic...My only knock. As soon as I got it, I attached this to my rig and ran to a production I was shooting. The uptime didn't take long and if you know how to read, scopes, histograms, parades and all that technical blah blah, you definitely have the best unit. It's touch screen and very easy to navigate. I could go on and on but there's a reason why so many people recommend this one. The size is perfect too. Drop that cash, what are you waiting for? I made the money back after I shot my production.

Big issues

I've used 2 different copies of the Shinobi with my Panasonic G9 and Panasonic S5II, and I've experienced the same issues with both. When using the peaking filter, it highlights all of the text and icons on screen for some reason instead of just highlighting the footage that is in focus. This includes when I try to display my camera information like shutter speed and f-stop on the monitor-- making it very difficult to read. Also, it seems to remap the bottom row of pixels to the top of the monitor creating a distracting line above my footage (which also remains highlighted when the peaking filter is turned on). Lastly, when I turn my camera off and on again, the monitor often switches to a lower resolution display. I'll have to unplug and replug the HDMI for it to display the full resolution again. Not to mention there's a few second delay when switching camera modes (i.e. C1 to C2) or going in and out of playback. It's a monitor packed with features and a lot of potential, but these issues make it pretty annoying and unpleasant to use.

Great for what it is, a monitor.

It's not a recorder so just for using as a monitor. The 5 is bright, colorful and pretty nice. Glad I bought it, no regrets.

Great Monitor for my Fuji

I needed a monitor for my new Fujifilm XH2S. Eventhough there are newer and cheaper monitors from other brands, I decided to try the Shinobi after reading great reviews. I bought it with the accessory Kit of two batteries, sunhood etc. It worked out of the box. It's light and bright enough for me.

Great but hot

Great monitor with a great screen and touch features. Falls short on how it handles heat. The monitor reaches extremely hot temperatures, and still has a relatively slow turn around time when you need to review footage

Pixels burnt into the monitor and washed out borders

I am having several issues with a Shinobi 5 that I purchased recently. 1) The menu letters and battery symbol (upper menu row) seem to be burnt into the monitor because they don't dissappear completely when the menu is disabled. 2) Pixelation issues, especially when the monitor is hot but also sometimes on cold start (the quality decreases noticeably). 3) The borders of the monitor seem to be washed out (less dark). I believe these issues are not acceptable on an almost new monitor. Will try to return this item.

Half the time I hold the power button it dosent turn on. This thing takes forever to turn on once it actually does. So I end up just leaving it on all day killing batteries

Using this with my canon 6D, screen isn’t full and the image it shows isn’t even clear. Any ideas?
Asked by: Brenden
The Canon 6D does not have a Clean HDMI output that sends out a full HD signal. This is simply a limitation of the camera.

Yes! I use this Shinobi with my Sony a6500 shooting 4K. Needs an HDMI D (Micro) to HDMI cable to connect. I use this monitor on my Ronin-S gimbal with a6500. The a6400 has same output and will work. This is a wonderful monitor that I highly recommend. K
