Peak Design Travel Backpack (Black)

The black Travel Backpack from Peak Design is a bag that can serve as the core of a versatile transportation system for photographers, multimedia creators, and dedicated travelers. Expansion zippers along its spacious main compartment allows this backpack to increase from 30L to 45L in volume, while inside, a zippered partition system forms an optional front and rear divider. To further enhance the ability to organize this bag's contents, separately available Peak Design compartments that are specifically designed to store camera, video, audio, and digital media equipment, as well as apparel or small electronics can be arranged within the Travel Backpack to create a customized carrying solution that can be changed as needed.

When the Travel Backpack is worn, a sleeve with dedicated pockets for a 10" tablet computer and a 15" laptop rests behind the shoulders, within the main compartment. A front-facing pocket is included for items that need to be accessed quickly and conveniently, such as a pair of sunglasses or music player earphones, while hidden side pockets can be used to safely hold a passport, a phone, or other items that benefit from a higher degree of security. Also along the sides of the Travel Backpack are two large, open pockets that can each hold a water bottle, tripod, monopod, or trekking pole; any one of which can be secured using a locking strap above each pocket.

If placed on the ground or a flat surface, complete access to Peak Design compartments or items placed directly within the Travel Backpack is provided by a zippered panel that faces the back, as well as the front panel which unzips to also reveal four zippered mesh pockets that can be used to store and organize batteries, memory cards, or small electronics. When partially opened, the rear panel's zippers allow a laptop or tablet computer to be removed from or placed within the laptop and tablet computer pockets through the top of the Travel Backpack. The main compartment can be reached even while carrying the Travel Backpack, through zippered side openings which are positioned to face the wearer when the bag is rotated from one's back to front with either side facing upward.

The Travel Backpack can be carried using built-in handles along its top, sides, or by its adjustable, shoulder straps. For heavy loads, this bag's sternum strap can be used to more evenly distribute the weight being carried, while a waist belt transfers weight to the hips for additional comfort, and helps to limit unintentional shifting around the wearer. During storage or transport, the straps and waist belt can be tucked behind the rear panel, which also features a built-in handle that can be used as a pass-through, allowing this bag to be mounted onto a rolling case's dual-column telescoping handle for added convenience.

Featuring durable, nylon construction, the Travel Backpack is built to be weather resistant and is compatible with a separately available rain cover for further protection from the elements.

Peak Design Travel Camera Cube (Small)

This small Travel Camera Cube from Peak Design is part of a compartment system that enhances the ability to organize the contents of a Peak Design Travel-Series bag. Designed with interior dimensions of 11.5" x 6" x 6" to store camera, video, audio, or digital media equipment, it can accommodate a DSLR camera with a battery grip and a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, or a mirrorless camera and four lenses, or a medium-sized folding drone kit.

Equipment placed within this Travel Camera Cube's non-abrasive interior can be arranged using its two padded, touch-tab dividers. A movable, touch-tab pocket is also provided to hold batteries, memory cards, or other small accessories against the inside of this Travel Camera Cube. When placing the Travel Camera Cube itself within a compatible Travel-Series bag, four included Peak Design C-Clips allow it to become a securely mounted compartment. The Travel Camera Cube is then prevented from shifting, and can be made to have its zippered opening align with one of a Travel-Series bag's own openings for seamless accessibility to the equipment inside.

Complete access to the Travel Camera Cube's interior is enabled by a zippered panel. A pull-tab along the top of the zippered panel can be used to simultaneously retract the zippers while opening the panel for immediate removal or placement of items within the Travel Camera Cube.

While intended to be used as an internal Travel-Series bag compartment, this Travel Camera Cube features durable, weather-resistant nylon construction, and a top handle allows it to be securely carried.

Peak Design Travel Backpack Reviews

So close to the perfect family travel bag.

Overall the bag is great, I don't think it's 5 stars though, but should round up not down. Mainly I needed a backpack that can handle a families worth of travel stuff (jackets, water, snacks) and easy camera access. This bag with the small camera cube works great for that. It carries well, good organization, it's expandable, fold away hip belt is great, and I can fit a Nikon z6 and 2 lenses easy access in the camera cube through the side. The bad is the "collapsible" top section. It's nice to have, and with the top collapsed it fits under an airplane seat (at least sun country). Tue snaps disengage with any pressure though, so it works, but not really that well. It would also make camera access easier if the side zippers also ran from the bottom, but it's also a little more secure this way.

Perfect Travel Bag

I have finally found the perfect travel/camera bag. I am able to pack all my gear and clothes for a 3-4 night photo trip. I have medium and small camera modules as well as 2 small and medium clothing bags. This allows me to switch around the space depending on my needs for different trips

Shoulder Strap Broke

Two days of use and the shoulder strap broke and my gear went crashing with it. I was disappointed considering I purchased prior a PD bag to fit in this bag as designed. Loaded fully it was uncomfortable and put a lot of pressure on the pins that hold the should strap together. Gear didn't feel protected from pressure of pack. Grateful I wasn't anywhere remote when this happened. Prior to use it felt like a weak point. After about 10 days the bag company reached out and offered a discount on a new bag. B&H was fast in responding and returning. Ultimately, I went with an Atlas bag which is designed more like a traditional hiking bag.

Another quality Peak Design product!

I was first introduced to Peak Design's luggage lineup by their monster-sized 65L Duffelpack. Its innovative features and cargo capacity have made it useful for long and short work trips alike. When I needed a new dedicated carry-on backpack, I chose to buy this pack because of my satisfaction with its massive sibling, and it doesn't disappoint. At its smallest setup, it holds 35L and is compact enough for daily use. When fully expanded, it holds 45L while still remaining easy to transport. In its standard configuration, it holds 40L. Personally, I've found the standard configuration to be the most convenient. In this mode, the bag will hold three units of Peak Design packing accessories and meet most airlines' carry-on restrictions. As far as build quality, it's up to Peak Design standards. The material is a thick and water-resistant nylon canvas. The stitching is sturdy, and the handles feel rock solid. If I had one complaint, it would be that the shoulder straps aren't foam-padded, but this is a small trade-off for their ability to fold into the bag and reduce its footprint. On a recent trip, I loaded this bag with a camera cube and a packing cube, then used the free space at the top for bulkier items. I had room for four days' worth of work and evening clothes, plus my SLR and lenses. Traveling with this bag was a joy; the side zippers made it easy to access my gear quickly, and the fold-in straps made overhead bin stowage a breeze. I'm happy to say that this bag effortlessly matches the quality of its bigger brother.

Excellent travel bag for any gear head

This travel bag can accommodate a large amount of gear despite its carry on size and the organization and number of ways to carry things is very impressive. Hip belt (with awesome hip belt pocket) cleverly fold into bag with magnetic closure. I love the different size camera and packing cubes that accompany the large compartment of this bag, which allow the traveler to store a large variety of gear clothes in many different ways. Given how airlines are increasingly losing or damaging bags, this bag system will probably save you long term. Plus learning how to pack all you need in one 45L carry on bag will make your travel experience much simpler and more enjoyable.

Love it

Great design.

Way too uncomfortable and difficult to use

By Thomas

I am amazed by all the positive reviews for this product, because there is almost nothing that I like about it. There are FAR more pockets (and therefore zippers) than anyone will ever use, adding way too much extra bulk and weight. So, the *useful* storage volume is way lower than it could be at any of the three (30L, 35L, 45L) size configurations, and the pack is noticeably heavy even when empty. The snaps that reduce the volume from 35L to 30L are absurdly difficult to engage, so you may run into trouble when trying to use this as a carry-on bag. And yet, the waist and sternum straps are minimalist almost to the point of uselessness. The waist strap should have a standard snap clip instead of the slow-to-use, very insecure slide clip that PD has chosen. If I were going to keep using htis bag (which I'm not), that would be the first thing that I would change. The sternum strap is uncomfortable (for me, anyway) at any of its several mounting locations, mostly because of the large, hard, metal clips used to attach it to the shoulder straps (this is perhaps the craziest design element of the entire pack, since there are obvious, much better alternatives). Almost all of the many, *many* straps on this bag are difficult to adjust. They also take a lot of practice to engage without looking in a mirror while you're doing it. The recycled plastic fabric used for the bag is very unpleasantly stiff. It feels like having a rigid box strapped to your back. This alone would be enough reason to avoid the product. The magnet closures for the pocket that can hide the shoulder & waist straps do not hold well, in part because that pocket is somewhat too small for all of the straps, no matter how carefully you arrange them. Without an awful lot of practice and training as a contortionist, you aren't going to be rotating this to the front of your body to get quick access to your gear as shown in the Peak Design videos. I said above that there's almost nothing that I like about this product. The one exception is the quite nice Sage color. Overall, this pack is very finicky and difficult to use, not a good thing when you're trying to get it together in a hurry or in bad weather conditions. This product is the epitome of style over substance, and has replaced the wretched Cotton Carrier CCS G3 as my most-regretted photo gear purchase of the past year--I'm going to be looking for a competitor to gift it to. If you look at PD's Facebook page, you will see that there are lots of people volunteering to give the company design advice. There's a reason for that. It's too bad, because some of the company's other products (particularly the Travel Tripod) are really great and I would highly recommend them.

Looks better than it is

This pack looks great and has nice touches, like metal clasps and stow-away straps. However, it has several shortcomings. The most significant is that it simply is not comfortable. The straps and fabric are stiff and the bag just hangs on my shoulders. For $300, I expect something more comfortable (a TMP pack is much more comfortable, which is what I'll get). Also, the rear entry seems like a good idea but just makes getting in the pack more of a hassle. Also, the fabric is very thick, which obviously increases durability, but also increases weight. Bottom line, if I'm carrying this pack for a few hours, comfort tops all. There are much more comfortable bags out there for a lot less money.

I've been on a quest to find the perfect bag. I have the Atlas Adventure Pack and the Peter Mckinnon Nomatic. Both have a depth issue. My 5DMIV with battery grip doesn't fit well. Put a decent sized tripod plate on and forget it. Can anyone shed light on the depth for this?
Asked by: Chris
My 5D3 with grip and 50mm 1.2L lens fit perfectly in a on-side orientation. Theoretically you could put a larger lens and fit as well. Bag is very roomy. It works largely on the insert systems so I recommend going to the manufacturer site and looking at the depth for the insert you wish to use to see how it will fit. Also Peak Design is one of the best companies when it comes to how to videos. Search them on YouTube and they will have many videos of their products and different fitments for many popular hardware.

Can this bag hold a 600 mm lens? If not, what's the largest lens the bag can hold?
Asked by: William
Peak Design Travel Backpack (Black) does not include any dividers though. Usually an option with dividers is purchased so that it can better hold the lens. For example this one comes with the medium dividers. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1456246-REG/peak_design_peak_design_45l_travel.html The medium dividers measures only 11 x 11 x 6" so it would fit a smaller lens for example 70-300, but it depends on the exact lens you are looking for because there are larger and smaller 600mm lenses in the market.

Can this bag be a personal item, and fit under the seat of an airplane?

No, the Peak Design Travel Backpack at 22" x 13" x 9.5" in its smallest configuration would be to large to fit under most every airline seat. However, it would be OK for overhead carry-on on most domestic airlines.
