KIPON 35mm f/2.4 Reviews

A Leica competitor in Fuji X-Mount

The Kipon iBerit 35mm f2.4 was designed in Germany and is made at the Kipon factory in Shanghai, China. It was originally released in Leica m-mount and designed to compete against Leica, Zeiss, and Voigtlander lenses. Everything about this lens is superb, optical quality, small size, and build quality. Solid metal and glass with a Fuji FX-mount at an amazingly affordable price.

Blew me away!!!

I was skeptical of this lens. First and for most I was not able to find anything about the lens online in the ways of reviews. With very few native z mount lenses, it left me looking for a compact 35mm. It’s time like these we look to the third party market to fill those gaps. The whole reason I sold my D850 in favor of the Z7 was the size. So I was left adapting my Nikon 35 f1.8g and left with this awkward balanced device in my hands. I consider many options, all these left me in the same place I started, in terms of size. Then I found the kipon 35mm. As soon as I took the lens out of the box I knew I was going to be more than happy. Since then I have had the chance to shoot some portraits as well as being spot to use for its intended purpose: street photography. This is where the lens really shines. The focal markings make zone focusing a breeze and the focus ring holds itself in place nice even with slight bumps and jiggles. The contrast that this lens provides SOOC is simply stunning and adds a special character to this lens that I have not seen before. Wide open this lens is freakishly sharp. When stopped down to F4 it is nothing but magical. I only have two gripes with this lens. The first being it seems to have a slight flare issue. Nothing a UV filter and hood can’t help. Second, It would have been nice for the price if one was in included, even if it was a cheap plastic one. However after purchasing the kipon hood ($50) I can say it’s well worth the price. In the end, I have this to say: but this lens. I love it so much I’ll probably buy one of the other variants down the road. They are super well made, feel great, and work amazingly. If you’re worried about the F2.4 being limiting, don’t worry!! You have the IBIS to make up for any extra stops you need.

Great little lens

Takes a lot to get 5 stars out of me. That said, this balances very nicely on the Nikon Z7. Very sharp images with good color rendition with good contrast. I purchased a 49mm lens hood to mitigate the lens flare that others mentioned and a 72mm lens cap for the front of the hood. For me this lens is a great deal for the money if one doesn’t want to get the Nikon Z 35mm lens.

I've had this lens for a week or two now. I didn't see any info on it really except the 1 review here and maybe 2 youtube videos, but decided to take the chance to see how it was. Love it! As far as prime lenses go, this lens is perfect. Fits securely on my Canon EOS RP. The aperture ring moves solidly but not too hard or clicky. The focus ring is smooth and won't move out of place if you accidently tap it. The glass is super clear and the metal is solid. The markings are etched and filled- the good way. Not too heavy at all for how solid it is. The image is pure cream with creamy icing on top. At f/2.4 I had a DOF of about 1 inch. The spheres are perfect. I come from a film background, and this lens gets a beautiful cinematic quality when shooting video (yes the RP does 24p since the October 2019 firmware update) though I purchsed this camera for mixed use photo/video. This lens pairs up great with the RP. The price is good for the quality, though the 35mm doesn't come with the metal hood, and for the price it should. But I won't take a star off for that, the image is too nice. Yes I would purchase again. Yes I do recommend to anyone looking for a 35mm prime lens.
