Great B&W Lens?
Chromatic aberations provide a sort of out of focus beauty for B&W photography. Anyone noticing this?
Chromatic Aberration An Issue
Let me preface this by stating I have only used this lens for the past few days and therefore cannot offer a comprehensive review, but rather an initial impression along with some observations. First, build quality is solid. Full metal body and smooth rotation on the focus ring make it feel substantial on an X-T3. Images in camera seem solid, but it is in post when the main (and significant) issue pops up: chromatic aberration. The fringing is significant, especially with any back-lit subject matter. I like the feel of the images, but the the aberration makes this a hard sell. Until this issue is fixed, I would say look elsewhere.
pluses and minuses
Received this lens a few days ago. The physical aspects are very good, Metal construction, smooth focus and aperture adjustments, and it fits and feels very good on the Sony. Its a great lens to shoot with. The images are very sharp. They are slightly cool in tone but not objectionably so. The biggest issue is the chromatic aberration. Its very prevalent at f2.8 and only slightly less at F4. Its correctable in post however that does affect the overall image color. Ive attached a couple photos, pre and post CA correction. Both were shot at F4.
pluses and minuses
I received this lens about a week ago and I definitely have mixed emotions on its performance. Mechanically its excellent with metal construction. The focus ring moves smoothly and is well damped and the knurled aperture ring is easy to access and turn. The overall size of the lens works and feels very well on the Sony cameras. Optically the lens produces images that are very sharp across the whole frame. Colors are somewhat cooler but not objectionably so. The biggest issue is the chromatic aberration of the lens and while this can be corrected in post it does mean that certain colors in an image will be affected. Ive attached a couple of photos, pre and post CA correction. And while the CA issue diminishes at f4 and above it is still present and will need to be addressed.
UPDATE - It gets better with time
In a previous review, I mentioned the chromatic aberration being an issue - that hasn't changed and I would say that shooting into any type of high contrast area will net you quite a bit...however. However, I have to say that the lens is growing on me. The sharpness is actually very good and the colors that I get straight out of camera are excellent. So, if you can get over the aberration aspect and need a cheap 90 for some portrait work or otherwise, this isn't a bad choice - you just need to like the quirks.
Chromatic Aberration an Issue
A decent lens - the construction is solid; focus ring slides smoothly and the aperture ring has satisfying clicks at each stop. The main issue I have encountered is significant aberration at lower stops, specifically 2.4 - 4. The problem is exasperated with a subject being back-lit or brightly lit (see picture for an example at f2.4). For the money, not terrible but can I recommend this if you have the budget for something better? No.
