Viltrox EF-EOS M2 Overview

This 0.71x Lens Mount Adapter from Viltrox allows a full-frame Canon EF-mount lens to be mounted onto a Canon EF-M-mount camera. While doing so, the adapter's optics help to maximize the connected lens's apparent angle of view while providing a one-stop increase for the camera over the lens's aperture range.

If a lens intended for 35mm film or similarly-sized full-frame camera sensors is connected to a Canon EF-M-mount camera, it would project an image larger than the camera's APS-C sized sensor was built to accept. Able to capture only the center portion of the projected image, the effective angle of view of the lens would be narrowed, creating an in-camera "crop factor." This adapter condenses the light from a lens designed for 35mm film or "full frame" camera sensors and projects it onto a Canon EF-M-mount camera's APS-C sensor. This allows the APS-C sensor to utilize more of the light gathered by a connected lens, which effectively reduces the crop factor while making available to the sensor an additional one stop of light for each of the lens's f/stop settings.

If a compatible lens includes autofocus, as well as camera-controlled aperture functions, this adapter is intended to allow those features to be used. Also, if an attached lens is capable of generating Exif metadata when used with a directly compatible camera, this adapter is designed to allow that information to be saved along with image files generated with a combination of the lens, a compatible Canon EF-M-mount camera, and the adapter.

This adapter is constructed with four lens elements in four groups that are designed to provide optical clarity as well as color fidelity, and the underside of its detachable tripod foot is tapped with a 1/4"-20 accessory thread, enabling direct attachment to tripods or quick release plates that feature 1/4"-20 mounts. For ease of upgrading its firmware, this adapter also includes a micro-USB port.

  • Maximizes apparent angle of view of combined camera and lens
  • Provides a one-stop increase for the camera over the lens's aperture range
  • Four lens elements in four groups for optical clarity as well as color fidelity
  • Supports electronic communication between camera and lens to enable autofocus, on-camera aperture control, and Exif metadata generation when possible
  • Detachable tripod foot with 1/4"-20 accessory thread for direct attachment to tripods or quick release plates that feature 1/4"-20 mounts

Viltrox EF-EOS M2 Reviews

For Canon M50

The whole experience with B&H was flawless. The adapter mounts securely to my M50 and functions beautifully with my Canon EF 85 1.8. Opens up to 1.2 which is not really the best aperture for this lens but its nice to have the latitude! Thank you B&H!

I got this with my sigma 150-600mmC and the photos have been better than ever If there 100 stars to rate this with it would be 100 stars easy love this product

Oh baby let's get weird with the bokeh!

If you want EF glass on your X mount camera then this will get the job done. However the bokeh does get a little swirly towards the edges and auto focus is a no. Personally I can and have been living with it but, to each their own.

Good, not great. Worth the price though.

Depending on focal length, some corner softness and vignetting, which was expected and actually a bit better than I anticipated given the price. Focus, even with latest firmware and despite the setting, is fine for single shot situations, but tracking and video is pretty worthless. It does allow me to use full frame lenses on my APS-C bodies though and the color rendition and added bokeh are good, so for casual shooting or stationary video subjects, this is nice to have in the kit.

Buying my Viltrox Focal Reducer was my first B&H in-store experience. WOW! What a pleasure! Five stars! The Viltrox EF-EOS M2 itself: I wanted an adapting focal reducer to use quality vintage primes on my Canon M50. There are two main brand choices: Metabones (metal housing); Viltrox (plastic housing). For use with vintage glass, electronic connections are moot. I tried both products at the B&H counter and saw no difference between them, and I was not price sensitive. In subsequent video shoots, I have noticed no loss of sharpness or increase in noise when pixel peeping in Resolve. Both competitors are made in China. What chance is there that either Metabones or Viltrox own a glass factory? They are buying in the lens component, probably from the same supplier. Unless you require a metal housing (I do not), you will be completely satisfied with the Viltrox. I am.

Great buy

Excellent product. I started using with a 50mm EF lens I purchased with my M50 mark ii. The picture quality and the crisp of the resolution is optimal for my small rig. The adapter converts my m50 into a full frame camera at a cheaper price, with no much compromise in quality. :-)

Almost Perfect

Can this help with the crop effect created by the sigma DC 30mm f1.4 contemporary lens for the canon m50? Will this speedboster be compatible with those lens mounts?
Asked by: Josean
The Sigma 30mm is a DC lens so it was made for the crop sensors in the M50. Using a booster would cause vignetting on a Sigma DC lens.

Does the Canon M50 auto focus and Lens stabilization work with the canon EF Lens and this?

I have a Canon eos M200, not an M50, but my auto-focus still and lens stabilization still work fine. I recommend going to the viltrox site, after you get yours, and downloading the firmware update.

Yes, it will work with your M6 mk2. The 24mm will have an effective angle view of a 27mm and the 17mm will be 19mm. You will also gain 1 fstop of light.

Can you use Canon M50 native glass on this speed booster?
Asked by: Joel
No. This adapter is to adapt Canon EF (full frame) lenses to the M series cameras like the M50. This give you close to full frame performance on an APS-C sized sensor with all the automatic functions of the lenses working. In other words, this is a smart adapter.

if I use it in EOS M50 with sigma ef 18-35 would I get the full frame field of view what happens to the aperture then
Asked by: Antonio
Yes, you’ll get a similar field of view of a full frame camera as well as an extra stop of light. So a lens with a fixed aperture of f/28 would then be f/2.
